9 Year Old with Stomach Issue

I am hoping some of the mom's on here can give me some advice . Four the past four months my nine year old son gets sick once a month for about a day. He wakes up with a stomach ache, then he gets the horrible rotten egg burps and by the evening he is doubled over in pain until he vomits. The next day if we push foods to quick (even just saltines) we have the same issue. The first time it happened the Doctor thought he had the flu. The second time when it started he had me give him an antacid. The third time he had eaten a couple clementines the day before so I thought it was just to much acid. Then last night it happened again. I can not think of anything different that he has been eating, he is not constipated, (He had issues with when he was younger). The only thing different this time is he has a canker sore on the inside of his lip. I am going to call the doctor Monday, but I am not sure what things I should request of the doctor, test, medicine, ect. It is just too much to watch my little guy go through this every month. If anyone has any ideas please share.

Just a little back ground when he was seven he had issues with heart burn and constipation, and anxiety. We have not had any of these issues in over a year and I thought we where finally past it.

Thanks for reading,
E.

Of course you have to contact the doctor and rule out a medical issue, but does sound like could be anxiety. Sometimes anxiety from something that happened the day before can present itself later.........after you have calmed down. If you think that is the case you can consult a child therapist.

The other thought is reflux. Good pre and probiotics could help the situation.

Another thought. does this happen the day after a housekeeper comes or you do heavy cleaning. Cleaning material can be very toxic, especially for children. I'm no doctor, but I do sell non-toxic cleaners and health products. For example, one of my close friends had terrible headaches every time her housekeeper came, but after she switched to my products that never happened again.

Start keeping a diary of what your child eats, whether the day was stressful, cleaners, etc... maybe you can pinpoint something.

my son has had stomach problems since birth and has the nasty smelling burps, heartburn and all too... He was diagnosed with Gastrointestinal reflux as a little baby and was on zantac before the age of 1... We had to change our diet a little, but we are pretty healthy eaters so it wasnt too hard... We just try not to give him anything too spicy too many times in a row... He is now 11 and it is slowly getting better, but he still has his days too... Can your child swallow pills yet?? My son's doc told us to have him take Zantac 75 when he was having the smelly burps to help with the acid... For a while we had him take it every day... Now he usually takes it about once a week or so... You might ask your doc about trying that... It is a really tiny pill and I had him try m&m minnies before he did that to get used to it... Good luck with it... I know the frustration that goes with not really having an answer... My son is getting a bit better with each year... I hope this helps...

Hi E.,

When my daughter was seven we went through some of the same things you are discribing. The gas they pass reminded me of sulfar from science class in high school no joke. We had trouble for several months vomiting to the Dr.several times. We had to end up going to a very bland diet no fat, oil, or grease what so ever. Put my Gorge Forman grill to use cooking chicken breast with no seasoning and cooking rice in 99% fat free chicken broth she lived on this for a long time. Breakfast was oatmeal or she choose some cut up chicken breast. The dr. said she might have had a bad enough case of viral intestional flu that it can effect the liver or other organs and she gave us an additional month to get better or she was going to do a liver work up. My daughters stools she was passing were like almost white to a pale yellow. But she would double over in pain any time we tried to advance her diet. Your liver, gall bladder and pancrease are all involved in digestion in some way or another so the blandest diet as possible worked and it took alittle over a month and she was also put on zantac for a month. But her stomach still had problems for several months after if she wasn't careful what she ate. Hope he gets better soon. Yes I highly recommend him seeing a dr. Some Viral infections can damage some organs permanently. God bless!

I wish I knew the answer to this as we had a daughter, now grown, who had this about the same age as your son. Not sure it was exactly the same but she would double over in pain and then vomit. We noticed it was usually when we had taco salad or mexican type food. I took her to the doctor who said it would be almost impossible to treat 'stomach' issues as so many things could be the cause. Wish now I'd gone to a different doctor. But I do think it was either the greese, or an allergy. She did seem to get over these spells in a year or so and yet she is still the one with a very sensitive stomach. She was so ill when pregnant that they had to give her IV's, so maybe something to do with digestion, allergy, but I really don't feel like it was anxiety as it was with certain food with her.
I imagine your son will also outgrow this but it would be so good to know what causes it. Our daughter didn't have the other issues you mentioned but see if he is worse with certain foods. Do an experiment with the food and type of foods and write it down. Or when he's constipated make a chart to see if that is worse. I know if he's very badly constipated that could definitely cause it and if that's the case he really needs treatment for the constipation quickly. I know Miralax is used a lot now for that and also fruit, not just juice is better. Start there and document changes if any.

have them run a blood test for celiac disease. My husband and both my kids have it and that is exactly how it is for my daughter. She gets horrible stomach cramps and burbs and vomit that smell like sulpher. it is horrible. My husband has classic celiac symptoms and still wasnt diagnosed until he was 30. Its only a blood test, so its worth a shot.
