A 6 Year Old Who Eats a Lot

I have a 6 year old nephew who I keep during the days he is not in school. This morning for breakfast he ate 3 bowls of cereal, 2 cinnamon rolls, and an egg and would have eaten more had I let him. For lunch he ate some fruit and 2 burritos and would have eaten more had I let him. I guess I am just wandering if this is normal eating for the age. His brothers are the same way. I will put a bag of cookies out and my kids will eat a couple here and there, but my nephew will stand there and eat as many as he can until they are gone. Just curious if I should be concerned or not.
Thanks,

What can I do next?

I would be concerned. Kids tend to eat a little more from time to time, but THREE bowls of cereal and more? No. Cereal and cinn. rolls wouldn't be bad, if it were just one bowl of cereal. Since he's not yours, I would limit him to breakfast, snack, lunch, and a snack. This is how licensed daycares have to structure their feeding schedule. However, if you choose to approach the subject with his parents, tread those waters lightly. I hope this helps.

I was worried about this with my oldest daughter. She would just get bored and not know when she was really done eating. I don't buy junk food anymore. I buy more fruits. She loves fruits and veggies. But since she is getting the healthier foods in her body she has lost weight and she does not eat as much. The fruits and veggies as a snack are fine with her and she knows when she is full.

one bowl of cereal should of been enough... then the cin. roll.

This child is eating more than some adults eat. I would just do the breakfast, snack, lunch, snack. Just like a day care would.

I would also talk with his parents. Ask if they have been trying to cut back what he is eating or trying to introduce more of the fresh fruits or veggies to him.

Good luck with this. I hope his parents are just as concerned as you are.

I would say that it depends on his ability to burn the food off. Is He over Weight. I mean I know a girl who can Eat and eat. She has an over active Thyroid. She is so skinny, so yes if these boys are at a normal weight for them, then I would say yeah, let them eat. On the other hand it should not be your responsibilty to suppy the extra food and this should be discussed with his parents, who know quite well what his eating habits are and should suppy the food or extra money.

I honestly think this is more a case of boredom or maybe trying to get the most of what he doesn't get at home. But regardless, feed him -then distract him with other things to do. You can go to http://www.kidapprovedmeals.com/ and see he is eating too much. Or google for other websites to get ideas. He may not be overweight now, but portion control should start while he is young. He'll love you for it later.

It seems as though your nephew may need some eating boundaries. That is a lot of food! Even for an adult. When I make meals for my family, I have a main dish, a fruit or veggie dish, and then possibly a filler such as a carbohydrate. That being said, he may be a compulsive eater and his brain doesn't know when he is full. He might need some guidance from the adults in his life to make some healthy food choices and set limits, without making a big deal of it, of course. Do not go about it in a negative way. Just ease into it. With his main meal, which was cereal, if he is still hungry, he may choose a fruit, and an egg. Healthy foods for a growing boy! It sounds as though you are trying to set guidelines for him. Kudos to you!
