A Big trip...how to Choose an Agent?

Can anyone recommend a great travel agent, or is there anything I should look for when choosing an agent, or does it even matter who I choose? I'm planning a big trip to Costa Rica for my husband's 50th birthday, and we'll be taking our son with us (he'll be 2 then). Anything we should think about or take into consideration?

So What Happened?

Never heard of tripadvisor.com, but how cool is that? Been reading stuff on the site for awhile now, and I'm pumped to go now! Got some good tips, and am very excited about the Treehouses, which I hadn't heard anything about until this site. Thanks!

I dont know a good travel agent. But, I always read alot of reviews on Tripadvisor.com before I plan a trip. It will give you lots of information on great hotels, restaurants, and things to do while on your trip. Good luck and have fun!

First of all, make sure everyone has their passport (even your 2 yo). And DON'T leave them at home. I just had a family flying to Nevis yesterday and Dad realized after they took off that he left his passport at home. They stopped in Florida, Dad got off and took a comercial flight back to New York to get his passport and will fly down today. A very expensive lesson.....
My husband and I have an online travel agency...www.YourTicketToTheWorld.com
Go check it out and click on book travel. You will be able to search for the best fares and lodging. Give us a call if you need help. We do NOT charge a fee for our service.
Enjoy your trip...sounds like fun. We have heard alot about Costa Rica, but have not been there yet ourselves.

We went there with our kids when they were one and four. We had a great time! We stayed at the Marriott Los Suenos and loved it. Costa Rica is beautiful and very cheap if you eat in town instead of at the hotel restaurant. I ate Chilean Sea Bass almost every night and it was only $8 for the entree plus sides. EMail me if you want more recommendations on things to do, etc. It's a very outdoor-oriented place but not a beach destination. The beach (at least where we were) was kind of gross with black sand. Our swimming was done in the hotel pool, which is amazing. We focused more on the Rainforest and the Arenal volcano...both very cool!

My friend Kim is a travel agent and could help you with planning. Her email is ____@____.com could also check my travel website for some deals: www.dreamtripstore.com.

Have fun!

I don't know about travel agents. I've always done lots of research online and booked everything myself. However, I have spent some time in Costa Rica. I don't know if you're planning on staying at a resort, but that might be the best with a toddler. Once you get out of San Jose, you'll need some Spanish language ability to get around. The Pan American highway is easy to travel and relatively well-maintained, but otherwise the roads are a mess and not well marked. Some may wash away during the rainy season. Make sure you get a 4wd SUV if you're planning on any driving off the highway. Plus, always keep valuables and luggage out of sight in the car. There isn't much other crime in Costa Rica, but theft is common.
With a 2-year old, I would just make sure that wherever you are staying, you know the closest hospital or clinic, just in case. You also might ask your ped. (and family dr. for yourself) for some preventative antibiotics in the event that someone gets sick. Dehydration can happen VERY quickly with little ones.
Costa Rica is a beautiful country, tons to do, and lots of fun for everyone in the family. There are some beautiful beaches on both the Caribbean and Northern Pacific sides of the country. If you're going to be north of the capital, near Arenal, check out Tabacon Springs. It's this resort built around a thermal spring with lots of lush vegetation, swimming, waterfalls, etc. Most of it is shallow, so you're toddler might enjoy it!
The "Ticos" are warm and friendly people. Have fun!
