A Friend Was Induced to Go into Labor Days Ago

A friend of mine had a due date of Aug 7th. She has (or had) high blood pressure. She was induced early Aug 8th to go into labor. She has been at the hospital ever since so it seems like an eternity waiting for the baby. Does anyone have examples of it taking this long or if there is a time limit before she will be scheduled for a c-section?

edit:She has enough people in her inner circle, so I am not bothering her with questions. I am just waiting and checking her fb page for updates. I figured I would ask here.
edit: when i said 'early Aug 8th,' i meant early in the morning not preterm (incase that was unclear).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She had her baby in the early morning. I was getting texts from her dad and aunt and then they stopped. Someone on fb announced it.

I was induced on a Sunday and finally had a c-section early Wednesday morning with my first. The clock started ticking (for the hospital, anyway) when my water broke early Tuesday morning.

Mason L.- Sounds like my story! With my second, I refused to allow early induction and had a drug-free VBAC at 41 weeks 5 days. My induction was at 39 weeks- I am very sure now that that was way too early for me, I need to cook my babies longer!

I was induced and labor lasted 36 hours before I had to have an emergency C-section, due to meconium being present in the fluid. To this day, I do not think it ws necessary and I think it ws an impatient doctor who just . . .what? why couldn't she wait? I don't know . . .

My sister was induced on the 12th, when she hit the 2 week overdue date. She had her daughter on the 18th. So, she was in the hospital in full labor for about 5 days. They finally did c-section because once they broke her water you can only go 24 hours before c-section. Or, if the baby goes into distress. For her it was the 24 hour rule.

Induction is usually not the way to go.... it takes a long time. Why did they induce only one day after her due date? Usually they wait a couple of weeks, and induce at the 2 week late mark. You have better rate with induction if they are "over-due". But mom's are real impatient now, so they are demanding induction - then it just sucks more for them. Not saying that's what your friend did.

have they broken her water? have her ask when they are going to break her water or strip her membranes?

Her Dr should be talking her through all this, though. Make sure she's asking questions to the staff at the hospital.

Good luck to your friend.

ETA - I just saw the high blood pressure thing - if she's got high blood pressure they probably won't let her go too long before they do a c-section.

Maybe they have to regulate the pitocin because the baby was in distress from the labor? And a c-section is no picnic if she's got high BP or other factors that make the surgery even more of a problem.

Are you sure the baby hasn't already come and they just didn't get on Facebook yet?

Here's hoping all goes well for her!

Sheesh. I was induced on the day after my due date, but after 10 hours with no effacement or dilation they sent me home... I didn't go into labor until three days later. Where, after 6 hours and spiking blood pressure thy broke my water and put me on the pitocin to speed things up.

I bet the doctor broke her water when he induced her, so now they can't send her home (when they induced me, the nurse asked my doctor if she should break my water for me, and the doctor told her not to unless they had to... So it probably isn't too unusual for some inductions to have the water broken right off the bat. I'm not sure.)... Or she is having controllable blood pressure problems. I think they will generally allow the mother to labor as long as it takes. It could be that she doesn't WANT a c-section, and if there is no immediate danger to the baby they won't push her to have one. My doctor started talking c-section after 18 hours (during my true labor) because my baby was beginning to show stress...

My sister-in-law was in the hospital for 3 full days before they gave her a c-section on the 4th morning! (And she asked for it.)

I know that the drug is supposed to cause a lot of things to happen. It often doesn't do enough. I know each labor the doc decided when the baby was going to be born those labors were harder and longer than the ones that started naturally.

I don't recommend anyone do the drugs unless they are overdue or having issues that could cause harm to one of them.

I think each time my daughter had Pitocin to start her labor she was in labor nearly double. And there was at least one time she went back home without a baby...it just wasn't done yet...lol.

I was induced at about midnight and had the baby at 10 PM the next day. However, earlier in the day the doctor thought the baby wouldn't come for another day because I was stuck at 2 centimeters. However, something kicked in and we had the baby later that day. So it could be that your friend's body is taking it's time. I wouldn't worry if she is being monitored at the hospital.

I wasn't induced but from 1st labor pain to delivery it took me 36 hours.
(Same as my Mom took with me (I was her first born)).
It turns our our son was born precisely on his due date.
We had IVF to have him so we knew exactly when conception took place.
If not for the high BP I imagine they would have waited a few more weeks before inducing her.
There was a resent study out that said that even when knowing when conception happens, "the length of the pregnancies varied by as much as 37 days".

She won't stay pregnant forever.
She'll have her baby soon but I have no idea what criteria the Dr's have about how long they'll let her go before a C-section.
If she or her baby are showing signs of stress, they can have the baby out very quickly.

I was on bed rest for a month before I had my son. All I did was go to the doctor 3x a week to monitor the baby & draw blood. They saw me on Wed morning & let me go home. They called me later that afternoon to come back. I didn't show up until Thurs afternoon. They induced labor. After 52 hours of labor they gave me a C section. I gave birth to a healthy 8.8 lb boy. He's now 17, 6'2", 285 lbs. Lol

I had High BP and was induced. During the induction nothing progressed. I was in for 2 days. Never dilated and my BP kept going back to normal even though the Medications hurt A LOT.

They sent me home empty handed the 3rd day, only to come back for my Weekly Checkup 4 days after and noticed my BP was high again so this time they said I wouldn't leave till I had the baby.

3 days later I had her finally. Had to have my water broken, and a vaginal suppository to get it all going.

Wow that's a long time.

I was induced back in 1994 about 8 am and I had my daughter with no complications at 6 pm sharp.

I suppose I was fortunate that pitocin didn't have the same effects on me as it has on others. Ouch!

Best wishes to your friend.
