A Spitty Baby

I am wondering if there are other moms out there battling the same problem I am having. My 6 month old son spits up all the time. He spits up formula as well as baby food sometimes. The doctors all tell me that this is normal in babies, but should he still be doing it so much at 6 months? Also, sometimes, he just seems to open his mouth and food comes up as opposed to actually burping and spitting up. If anyone has any similar experiences, please let me know. I am starting to worry.

What can I do next?

does he have acid reflux?
did the ped. order a test to see if he has this?
i would think a 6 month spitting up isn't 'normal.' i am by no means a professional. but my girls did spitting up but it was just a few weeks old not months old. i would ask the doctor to look into it.
good luck

It might be acid reflux. My daughter had it and she outgrew it around her 1st birthday. If all your son is doing is spitting up than I wouldn't worry about it. However, when my youngest was born she would scream and scream all the time. She didn't want to lay down and when she did she would scream and spit up until I picked her up. She had severe acid reflux, much like an adult does. So...here's my point. If your son isn't crying and acting fussy like this than he is fine and will outgrow it. Just make sure you have plenty of spit rags around and that he is gaining the proper weight that he needs to. I hope I could help! Good luck!

My son is almost 11 months old and still spits up. However it has improved. He used to spit up probably 15-20 times a day, no joke. We tried a bunch of types of formula and found that Enfamil AR has helped the best. I have been told that the outgrow it at a year or so... I sure hope so. I don't want to clean up chunks of carrots!

Both of my kids had GERD (acid reflux) as babies and never grew out of it. The kind of spitting up your son has can be dangerous b/c they can aspirate the fluid/food into their lungs. And some babies can have irritation of their stomach and esophagus even if they aren't crying all of the time. The first thing I would try is to change formula. Lots of babies have sensitivities to dairy protein and that can really make them spit up a lot. And be really careful about what solids you give him. Try to stick to things that are less acidic (peaches are the worst). And like other people have said, smaller meals really help too. Keep him upright for 30 minutes after feeding. Don't feed him or give him a bottle right before he lays down for a nap.

Most babies grow out of reflux by one year and it tends to get better around the time they are sitting up on their own. But you can ask your ped for a referrla to a pediatric GI. They are trained to treat reflux and will know (even w/o tests sometimes) if your baby needs meds or if it's 'normal'.

Here is a great website with lots of info and help:

Also, feel free to e-mail me thru my profile if you have questions. Good luck!

R.,
I have two thoughts. You are the mom and it is up to you to do what is best for YOUR baby. This is just a suggestion. You asked for input so I will say, if it were me, I would consider looking into cranial sacral therapy and/or chiropractic before putting my baby through tests of scopes into the digestive tract and drugs. Yes, they may be necessary. But cranial sacral and a good chiro who deals with babies regularly, will be soooo gentle, your baby will likely fall asleep! It won't hurt and may help.
If not, then explore drugs. Also, try to keep your baby sitting upright for at least 20 minutes - 1/2 hour after
eating/drinking. Good luck.

Is he otherwise happy, or is he fussy? It could be reflux. My daughter spit up a lot and also screamed just about all day long. She was finally diagnosed with reflux and put on Zantac at four months. I would definitely check again with your pediatrician. That sounds like a lot of spitting at age six months. Good luck!

Hi R.
My son used to spit all the time too, it was constant and horrible, we felt so bad for him. It turns out he had reflux. We switched to Enfamil AR (added rice) and added a little extra rice to the bottle, we needed nipples with more holes (we uesed Avent bottles with #4 nipples) and it really seemed to work. Good Luck.

I wouldnt worry my son is 7 months and still makes a lovely mess after all his meals. The doctor gave me some medice that was an antacid. It helped tremendously but was really pricey. After he used it I just stopped and am dealing with the spit up. As long as your baby is gaining the proper weight I am sure he is fine.

I would ask the doctor about GERD. A baby that age doesnt just spit up. My cousins baby did that and he had GERD and was put on a special formula and was to eat smaller meals throughout the dayand on medicine. If the doctor wont run the tests I would try to get a referal to a pedictric gastrologist. They could easily tell whether or not he has GERD. If it does it needs to be treated if swtiching formulas and smaller meals doesnt help then he will probably need meds for it. MY daughter has acid reflux now. She is 4 and 1/2. She didnt have it as a baby but i also breastfed so we didnt use formula with her. Good Luck. Let us know how it goes
