A Strange Question on Keeping My Son Cool

My son is a little hot head and has always been. He sweats all the time. I usually let him run around in as little as possible, but the problem I'm having is during the night. He's 1 year old and last summer when he was a new born we just brought his basssinet in the living room where the air conditioner is to keep him cool. This summer, he will only sleep in his room and cries if we leave the door open. I don't know why but he does. Our windows don't allow for additional airconditioning and I don't know of any products out there to keep him cool. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I'd look for the small A/C units, which also dehumidify (search for "portable air conditioners" - here's a link to info: http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/portable...)

but you could also try opening his door after he falls asleep, at least temporarily until he gets used to the idea. Also, a window fan turned to "exhaust" will pull the cool air into the room in the evenings before he goes to bed.

Other things you can do - put darkening shades or curtains on all windows that get a lot of light during the day. Put a big fan in one window of the house to pull in cool air after dark (and make sure one window has a fan turned the other way, to exhaust air out.) You might also want to put a thicker crib mattress pad on (the plastic is sweaty.)

My daughter can not sleep unless her pillow is cold. I heard an advertisement on the radio about the 'chillow pillow'. I put it on top of her pillow, inside the pillow case and it keeps it nice and cool.

I got it from Walgreens a couple years ago. I have not seen them in a while. They can be purchased on the internet.

It may be possible that you could just put it on top of the crib mattress, underneath the sheet. It is the same dimensions as a pillow. You fill it with approx. 10 cups of cold water so it is about 1/2 inch thick.

Of course precautions would need to be taken since your son is 1 year old. I just wanted to mention this because it was a life saver for us.

Could you replace his bedroom door with a screen door? I know it sounds odd... but it might work. The other thing you could do is just spend about a week or so with his door open and he'll probably get used to it.

Another thing is that really except for a very few nights, it cools down enough that if you open a window and put a box fan blowing in, the room cools down enough to sleep. You could always just try that trick and have the fan blowing in his window - the fan noise probably will help him sleep better anyway...

They have air conditioners that are for small rooms that plug in. If you can put it somewhere out of his reach this would be ideal for you!!
