Accidents in School

My son is almost 6 years old. In kindergarted yesterday he peed his pants. He said the reason was because he couldn't get his belt undone. My ex-husband and I seem to think that it might also have to do with the fact that he waits until the last second to wait to go potty and by then he is doing the potty dance and can't get his belt undone fast enough. Anyone have any advice on how to prevent this from becoming a regular thing? He has had this happen twice since December. Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

This book was phenomenal, It worked miricals in our lives.
"Potty Train your Child in Just One Day"
by: Teri Crane
We followed the directions exactly as suggested in the book.
It helps children of all ages and potty issues, I absolutly loved it.
It may be worth a try if you havent found something that works yet.
Good Luck!

Hi M.,
My daughter does this as well and it seems to go through phases. I would suggest while at home you can almost sense when the have to go, so tell him to run to the bathroom and whatever he is in the middle of doing will wait for him. My daughter will tell me she doesn't have to go then 5 min later doing the pee pee dance. I now tell her to run and try real quick and we will wait for her. Also, when he is at school try not to dress him with pants that require a belt. Use pants that are really easy for him to get undone and that should help.

I have a just five year old that dose this to. I have found that if I make him go (even if he pled that he doesn’t have to) just before we leave for pre-k. He can make it all the way though the school day (3hours) but I have to send him to the bathroom as soon as we get home and some times its pushing it. I don’t know what else to do maybe talk to his teacher so every once in a while she/ he can send him. If you find something that works, please forward it to me. for I will be in your place next year . Thanks

Ohhh--this breaks my heart! I too have a little boy in kindergarten--and he does the SAME thing--waits til the last second to go potty. They might miss something great if they go potty sooner. ha ha I'm afraid I don't have any great advice--maybe having him go potty just before you drop him off to school and not wearing a belt for awhile--(we buy the pants with the adjustable waist for this reason). Best of luck to you!

I wanted to assure you -- I teach kindergarten and while accidents are thankfully not a daily occurence, they do happen. I wouldn't be too worried about a couple of accidents in the last few months.
That said, I have a couple of suggestions. No belts - then he wont have to worry about it. Tell him to go before school and at recess, even if he doesn't feel the urge. Enlist the teacher's help -- what is her policy for bathroom trips (i.e. is it any time, they get up and go, or are there times that she needs the whole class together; do they have to ask before they go or not, etc....maybe he is embarrassed to ask.)
Whatever the circumstances, don't get mad at him. He is already distressed and embarrased enough about having an accident at school with his peers around. He needs to know it is OK, it happens, and you'll just work to help him do better next time
