Hello, I was wondering what is the youngest you would expect to see acne in a child? My 9 year old son has started to have breakouts on and around his nose. It looks like pimples, but 9 seems very young for that. He washes his face with regular old Ivory soap and water. I did not want to use any of the OTC anti acne meds I have found because they all specify that they are for teenagers.
I'd see the doc. 9 is young for zits, it might be something else. Sounds like a bacterial infection of some sort.
Has your son started sweating to the point that he needs deodorant? This may be that sweat is clogging the pores on his face.
My daughter started sweating around 7ish and breakouts on her face started shortly after. I took her to a dermatologist and the answer was the wash her face more frequently with a MILD soap - we use the aveena calming line with the facial cleanser and the moisturizer.
He said DO NOT use anything with benzol peroxide or salycilic acid because the pores in her face are not mature and it can do damage.
Additionally she carries the ponds facial cleansing wipes in her backpack and she uses them after gym class and whenever else she notices that her face is getting sweaty.
Make sure he moisturizes - if he starts washing his face more often without moisturizing he will dry his face out - especially in the winter when the humidity is so low.
I would also bring it up at his next Dr appt if it doesn't clear up with increased washing.

He could be having some hormone (puberty) issues. I'd stop with the Ivory soap and maybe get him some Neutrogena liquid face wash. Bar soaps typically have wax in them which would cause a film on his face.
Obviously a doctor's opinion is best. Mine only comes from raising two girls!
Is it possible it could be a form of eczema? I only ask because my 4 year old son has gotten what looks like little pimples on his face since he was a baby and the doctor told us it was eczema. It's much worse in the winter during the cold, dry weather.

I have a 10 year old and she has started breaking out on her nose and forehead. The doctor said it is actually normal. They recommended and I have her clean her face in the shower with Cetaphil cleanser. I also bought for her from The Body Shop Tea Tree Gel. It is a little tube of acne spot treatment. They have the full line (which I bought) but she was not diligent enough for it. I have also done a "mud" type of mask with all organic ingredients. Not sure if it helped but she enjoyed it!

My dd is in 3rd grade a few of the kids have started to get acne.
My daughter will be 9 in March and she gets pimples on her nose if she hasn't washed her face in a couple of days. (She doesn't like washing her face unless she's in the shower, and she doesn't take a shower every day.) I bought her some face wipes, hoping those would be easier for her to use, but we're still working on it.
I don't think 9 is too young to be having accasional breakouts. I wouldn't use anything strong on their skin yet, so maybe just try a different soap, and/or be more diligent about how often he washes.
My son has blackheads and whiteheads. His voice does seem to be a little bit lower. I am with him all the time so it is hard to say. I do have him wash his face every night and he does in the shower in the morning, but he still gets them. Maybe I'll have to call my Pediatrics nurse and ask her or my Dermatologist.
