ADHD Problems

My 9 year old son is having side effects from his ADHD medication, sleeplessness and decreased appetite, plus he's having more of the ADHD symptoms. We've tried other medications and the one he's on works best (the least side effects). He wears the patch for 7 hours. I am careful about what he eats. He gets a lot of exercise. He has a structured home life. Does anyone have any ideas about other ways to control his ADHD? Without the medication, he's unable to focus at school and his achievement level drops substantially.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who took the time to post a response. I really appreciate it. I've gone through the postings. I still need to go back through and make notes and/or look into some of the links provided. In the past we've done chiropractic care, that hasn't made much of a difference. I did do an elimination diet a few years ago and that is how I found he couldn't tolerate dairy. I did add goat cheese a few weeks ago, but took it out. I did take my son to someone who deals in eastern medicine. He gave us some herbs I've made into a tea. He thinks it is digestive problems. This actually makes a lot of sense. He's always been so sensitive to everything he eats. He wants to increase his appetite, then see what is fixed and then address his adhd. If I can eventually get him off the medicine that would be terrific and help his emotional state and focusing. He's 9, so I'd like to get this resolved soon!
Thanks Again!

Try the supplement "Vemma". Liquid that taste like OJ. Small dose works wonders for ADHD. My friend had home therapy visits with Psyc MD for her oldests condition. Dr was amazed at the difference adding a dose helped him. She ordered it from www.myvemma.com/bodyfitness. She does not get involved with the business side, just ordered the product. Go to "WHOLESALE PRICEING" to order enough for one month. It's guaranteed. You can send the empty bottles back and get a full refund if it doesn't work.

Best of Luck to You

Hi, I have a 14 year old son that has ADD he was on Concerta for 4 years and it worked great but he had to take an appetite pill because the concerta made him lose his appetite his body just got to used to it so he is now on Focalin XR and it has been the best so far. Not really any side affects at all. Trust me without my child being on medication he could not focus. He is Acdemically gifted but without the medicine hhe cannot show his potential. Also we are going to the doctor next month to see about getting our 7 year old on medication for ADHD. I also plan on putting him on Focalin too

I know this isn't everyone cup of tea, but have you worked with/talked to an integrative medicine physician. I am working with one for some other issues, and while I know alot will say that holistic medicine is bogus, I know first hand it isn't. It does work. I know the office I go to does work with ADHD kids. I know that doesn't help your medication concerns, but maybe this is an option that could make the meds more effective. Check out this website...see if there's something simiilar in our area. www.carolinacenter.com

Hello A.

I can understand the concern and frustration that you are feeling. We had the same problem with our daughter. We tried several medications, all had side effects and the one with the least side affects began to increase her heart rate. We were advised by a doctor to try an Advanced B Complex formula that he knows college students use to help them stay calm and focused during their exams. We are amazed at how much it has helped her. She is able to focus in school and complete her homework after school. We give it to her daily in the AM before breakfast, and after school to help her complete homework. There are no side effects at all. It has worked wonderful for her and it is all natural. It is called Isotonix you can purchase it on line at www.marketamerica.com/csparsons and click on Isotonix. I hope this helps. We considered all the costs of meds and docs without any good results, that the cost of the vitamin is worth every penny.

Strattera works very well for my daughter with ADHD. Watch diet for 'trigger' foods that can hype them. Bananas among them for us. Foods with red or yellow dye (red is worse)are particularly offensive for my daughter. Perhaps try removing some items from diet, then re-introducing them one at a time to see if there are any ill side effects from that one. I did that and it worked well for us. There is a diet called "Fiengold" that I used for about a year to help get things under control somewhat before we even started medication and, although it was a ton of work, it was worth it. Good luck - it's tough some days to see them not be able to control it themselves and then get frustrated as a result.

Hi A.,

There has been alot of speculation about the affects of additives, perservatives & food dyes in foods being linked to ADHD & Autism. You can't read the info on my personal website (www.R..mywildtree.com), but if you go to the company one, www.wildtree.com & click on the "about us" tab, then on the "recent news" tab, it will lead you to 2 articles. The 9/07 one is a story that the Today Show did about this subject & the 10/07 one is an article that appeared in Woman's World Magazine about a mom & her 8 yr old son with ADHD. I'm not saying that the use of all natural products that are free of food dyes, preservatives, additives & MSG are a cure-all, but, in some cases, it has greatly benefited the over-all health of a person & has decreased symptoms. Take a look, check out the info & the products. If you have any questions, contact me. GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS!! R.

A.,
When you say that you watch what he eats, does that mean that you have removed all dyes, BHT,& BHTQ from his diet? In the past 30 years the food created for our children has become LOADED with chemicals. ADHD is a chemical reaction. Your child's brain may be reacting to the dyes & additives. Have you ever taken a medication that "hypes" you up? Well, dyes and chemicals in our food can create the same reaction as that in our children's littler bodies. We removed all food with dyes in it and our two children have shown remarkable improvement! When they DO eat something with dyes, we can tell within a half hour by the change in their behavior, ability to concentrate, and general demeanor. Research the Feingold Diet and see what you think. It's hard at first but SO worth it!!

Hi A.,

I see you wrote that you watch his diet, but I am going to offer you this source anyway, in case you have not seen it:

http://www.feingold.org/

I know it has helped many people.I would also recommend investigating holistic health care practitioners, their approach to treatment stems from a completely different process. One may be able offer a completely different venue that you may not otherwise have been exposed to. Look for Homeopaths & Naturopaths. I wish you the best.

My husband had Adhd really bad when he was a child. His mother refused to use medications so she put him on the Feingold diet the actual elimination diet book is out of print but I found it in a few local library systems. they still sell the cookbook though. A few years ago he started to eat normal food again and he suffered a bout of depression so we went to the allergist We found the reason for alot of his behavioral problems were due to Intolerances to Food and perservitives. YOu may want to get an IGG test. The Autistic girl I watched had the same trouble when she ate certain foods she would have Fits of hyperactivity. I know you watch what he eats but it might be something like tomatoes that might be setting it off. well I hope this helps Good luck. I hope you find a solution!!

I have friends who have followed the advice in this link

content.nhiondemand.com/shp/HC3.asp?objID=100211&cType=hc

and had good results.

You will probably have to register (real easy) then go to the Tools and resources section, coditions and diseases, search database, ADHD, Treatment Options.

Make sure you buy good quality suppliments if you try this approach. The purity is very important. My business was just reviewed today if you would like to start there to gather more info. Shaklee Independent Distributor

No pressure. I taught high school and dealt with many students on meds. I wish I could have recommended some of these things to my parents then that I know now. I just want to try to help.

Hey A., a friend of mine had similar issues with her son. She started of course monitoring his diet a little better but also started giving him a drink that has a ton of B-12 (no sugar) in it to help him focus. It helped him tremendously. He noticed a difference the first time he tried it. I can get you more info if you're interested.

My 9 year old also has been diagnosed with ADHD and he is on an extended release Adderal pill each morning. He is also taken out of his regular classroom for any tests and is given twice the period of time allotted to finish his tests. For about a year, 2nd to 3rd grade he was in an IEP program at school but he was doing so much better that the other kids that they dropped his IEP and just let him have the longer, quieter testing time. I suggest that you not only go to your son's school with his ADHD diagnosis in hand, and request in writing that they test him for an IEP (special education) this is the law in NC and he has to receive services because of his diagnosis. I also suggest that you make an appointment with a neuro-pharmacologist who is best able to prescribe the medication that will be most effective for your son.

Hope this helped...

I have read that this can be cured with a change in diet. I am assuming of course that your child is eating cooked food. There is a movement in this country towards a haelthier diet and the form of rawfood to learn more go to rawfamily.com and reade how Victoria Boutenko saved her family from illness this way.The bible says seek and ye shall find. When you are shown the way will you be receptive? My own daughter had arthritis and this was cured after just two weeks this way. That was a long time ago and since then many others have been helped but one has to be willing to "seek" and the internet makes that so much easier now days.

Have you had any food allergies ruled out? Definately cut out any soda and limit sugar. Check on an old book about "your child's behavior chemistry " I forgot the exact name. Also if Tv and video games are in your life, limit them. Work on organizational skills and being able to multitask. Use visuals like dry erase boards, charts with rewards, etc. By 6th grade, they will desperately need these organizational skills.

Good Morning A.!

My son is now 18 but was diagnosed with ADHD at the very young age of 4. At the time he was diagnosed there were only about 4 medications on the market. The most successful one we found was the adderall. His doctor also prescribed him COLONDINE which assisted him in being able to fall asleep and stay asleep. This will help. The other thing is when you see him starting to "come down" from his meds...give him a 1/2 to 1 cup of coffee with milk/cream and a little bit of splenda. You may also add some flavored sugar free syrup flavors if needed. The caffiene is a stimulant similar to the meds he takes which are amphetemines. We found with my son's diet he could not tolerate items such as hot dogs and lunch meats or red Kool-Aides etc. The red dye sent his symptons thru the roof. We treated his diet as if he was diabetic more or less...no sugar ladden candies, cookies etc...lots of fresh fruits, vegetables etc. The loss of appetite is so difficult I know. Some times all he would eat would be a pb&j sandwich but I would let him have it because he was hungry. You can get a lot of sugar free jams and jellies now so the PB&J is still without too much sugar. Try sugar free puddings, jello, sugar free pop sickles etc on hand so when he is hungry and it is not quite dinner time you can still get something in him. We also had to end up changing our dinner times to help coincide with the times he would start to feel like eating. That can be especially difficult in a family with all the work schedules, school and activities. I hope some of this will help! My prayers are with you, your son and family!

Sincerely,
C. C.
