Kay, Melaleuca, plain soap, noxzema, clearisil, neutrogena, creams, scrubs, topicals, and the list goes on and on! I'm at my wits end!! Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for the wonderful ideas! I've been wanting to try ProActive for a long time. Unfortunately, current financial constraints make that pretty much impossible. However, there are all kinds of other methods for me to try; enough to keep my busy for a long time! I'll let you know if one or any of them makes a difference!
Thanks again so much! I really love being a part of this community.

Hi! I have been the same way my whole adult life. I have literally tried almost everything out there. The two products that have actually made a difference for me were 1)Continuously Clear Daily Ritual Cleanser on HSN.com. I was so happy to find it. and 2) I really liked the Exposed Skin Care line as well. (Exposedskincare.com) They both really work. Good luck!

I was given this advice by a modeling agent. She said, simply fill the sink with warm water and splash your face 30 times with the water. Afterwards use an astringent and lotion. That's all you need. Nothing to buy, just have a towel handy. I had suffered with acne for years and this was the solution that finally helped. I don't know why, but it does. Good luck!

I don't suggest dermatologists. I've never known anyone a dermatologist really worked for concerning acne, including myself. The only thing I got was the chance to spend a lot of money, lots of extra time to keep revisiting to try new things and lots of drying topical medications to put more wrinkles on top of it. I was working in a production with a cast mainly out of New York and I had terrible, terrible acne. I was 30 at the time...too old to have terrible acne. I told them of my dermatologist woes and several insisted that I try Proactive Solution. I would do commercials free for them. I am like a PS poster girl. It is a miracle worker. Nothing worked for years and years...my acne was cleared up in a month and I actually didn't even have to use it for an entire year at one point...the acne was just gone. I recently had a flare up due to my last period, so I reordered it. After 2 fully day applications as directed, the pimples were gone...my skin still has to heal from some drying damage due to the dry winters in CO, but the pimples themselves are gone. I LOVE Proactive Solution and I'm so grateful the cast convinced me to try it!

I would suggest seeing a dermatologist because the problem may not be treatable over the counter. As it seems you have tried everything else, it cant hurt to ask a professional. I have also heard really good things about proactive, but have never tried it personally. Good luck!

Hi M.,

I am 31 and have struggled continuously with the same issue. The only thing that has every really given me a dramatic reduction in breakouts is a non-prescription progesterone(spell?) cream called PROLIEF. It is by ARBONNE and is completely plant based. I know that this type of thing can be controvertial, however if you think your breakouts may be hormone related I urge you to check with a professional. I have always noticed that my breakouts are/were more concentrated during my cycle, but at times they were so bad that as they were finally clearing up the new round was getting started.

Also I am really excited to know if the baking soda thing works too for the treatment/maintenance purposes. I know that everyone is different so I hope this at least gives you a different idea to consider. ARBONNE has a website www.arbonne.com, they can be a bit expensive, but the cream for me was worth the cost of about $30 each and if you are interested I have the name and number of a consultant that I have used.

Take care and good luck,

M.

I've suffered with acne for years. I've tried many, many things...but this is the regimen that finally worked for me.

Morning:
I wash my face with Neutrogena Clear Pore Acne Wash then apply Nicole Miller (Melaleuca) Moisturizer/Sunscreen.

Night:

I wash my face again with Neutrogena Clear Pore Acne Wash then apply Evoclin (this is a prescription I get from my dermatologist). I've tried the other prescriptions and this one I was referred to by a friend of mine whose husband was in med school specializing in dermatology and she had bad acne and it is what he recommended for her. I love it. It comes in a foam form, so it is very easy to apply. BE PREPARED: Evoclin is very expensive. It is about $100 depending on your insurance for a bottle that will last about 3 months.

I hope this helps.

Hi M.,

I think perhaps you need to ask your doctor for a prescription of acutane. When all else has failed, it is the go-to medication for adult acne. It works wonders. They may have you try minocycline first. It works for some people, but not for all. Acutane seems to work for all. Ask your doctor about it. All the topicals will not help you, believe me. You need to get on a medication for your acne. Good luck.

I scanned your other responses and didn't notice this mentioned anywhere. You might try a tinted zinc mineral cream. You should be able to find it at Whole Foods. I don't know how it might work as a preventive, but it helps dry pimples up once you've got them. Someone in the Whole Body section of the store should be able to tell you more.

Also, be very conscious of touching your face a lot. I have a bad habit of resting my chin/jawline in my hand when I'm sitting around or propping the telephone for a long time between my shoulder and ear/jawline. Doing this tends to cause clogged pores in those areas and often I'll find pimples pop up the day after I've done something like that. Just something to pay attention to...

Good luck!

I agree with drinking more water. I also struggled with acne my whole life (so far - I'm only 26). I also have extremely sensitive skin. I never tried proactive because my sister used it for a long time and it never did anything for her. I am starting to get the tiny wrinkles around my eyes and forehead. Since moving to UT from AZ about 6 months ago, it has gotten worse. I was still getting breakouts until I started using the cleanser I have now. I don't know quite how bad your acne problems are. Mine has never been so bad that it scarred, but it has been light breakouts pretty much all the time and worse around menstruation. When I started using the Olay Anti-Blemish/Anti-Aging cleansers and moisturizers, it has REALLY helped. And best of all, I can get it at any grocery store, Target or Walmart for pennies of what the M. Kay, Avon, Proactive or other more expensive treatments. Like I said, I don't know how bad your problem is, but I think the Olay is worth a try if you haven't tried it already. It might save you some money if it works. Good luck.

M.,

I am soon to be 44. I was having problems with the wrinkles, pimples and hair in WRONG places. The joys of being a women. Any way I have been able to combat the pimples, and the tweezing is helping a bit.

First increase your water that you drink. Try to drink 1/2 of your body weight in oz. So If you weighed 150 lbs then drink 75 oz of water. Work up too it.

Second I started using baking soda every other day instead of soap. Now I use it daily. If I don't then I get pimples on my cheeks and along my jaw line. It is a great facial scrub to help get rid of the dead skin. Bet of all I can spend $5.00 at Sam's Club for a jumbo bag and use it to clean my house, my face, and do laundry.Better than what some of this stuff that is recommened at big bucks per item.

Just like I tell my 15 year old son what we put in our body is what comes out. So look at what you are eating and drinking. The fresher or more alive my food is the better my skin looks.

Hope this helps, By the way I learned about the baking soda when I watched some TV show with Queen Latifa (sorry if not spelt right) she said her Grandma used to use it once a week, and if it was good enough for Grandma than it was good enough for her. I figure if a really rich person with so much at her finger tips uses it why not me. Besides her skin is beautiful.

J.

PS-Congrats on 20 years with your hsuband. And thanks for his loyalty and protection to Lafayette. Great Town

Hi M.,

This is something that may help. It is called Xango and is for your health...but can also be put on topically. I found an article on pubmed that concluded that research done on the fruit, mangosteen-which is what xango is made of, had great results...here's the link to the study:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez I gues it has a strong natural anti-inflamitory effect. for more info on it you can watch this little 2-part video link:

I have friends that have used this product for this purpose and have had great results. let me know if you want to give it a try. Here's my website if you want even more to look at about it: www.mangosteenalliance.com/ford

I'm sorry to hear that! Have you tried EXTRA H2O? If you have tried everything and still are not seeing results, my best advice would be stop by an accupuncturist. Mine is in denver if you'd like a referral, but it sounds to me like there is some underlying issue, and the acne is just a symptom. Let me know if you need a referal :)

Acne is usually a sign of a sluggish digestive system. I usually suggest Dr. Christopher's lower bowel formula combined with a high fiber diet. Cut out sugars and preservatives and basically shop the produce section. You may actually see an increase at first as your body works to eliminate toxins, but the results can be amazing and you should feel better.

I had very bad acne. It was so bad that nothing over the counter including ProActive could help. I went to a dermatologist and was able to get it under control. I saw a dermatologist every week for a year. Now I can use M. Kay face washes and have had no major break outs.

congratulations on 20 years! i am over 30 now and have really bad bouts of acne at times, most of mine is hormone related. Have you ever tried phisoderm, you can get it at any walmart an dmost pharmacies, washing twice a day, not going to bed with makeup on. if you use a loofa to wash you face, replace them every couple of days at the least if not a new one each time you wash, they carry bacteria and will cause breakouts in themselves. lightweight moisturisers, Anew from avon has some reallly good ones, a little expensive but they work well for me, and dont cause me to break out. i hope you find some relief.

I don't know if it's what you tried or not, but M. Kay has a newer line of products that is for acne. It has worked wonders for a friend of mine. She has gorgeous skin and you'd never know acne was a problem. I think the products are Velocity. I hope you find something. Acne is hard enough when you're a teen and everyone has it, let alone as an adult!

I am 43 and still get breakouts around that time of the month. I use soap and water daily, then use Sea Breeze (just like I did as a teen). I can tell you something too that will help with wrinkles and acne, is St Ives Apricot acne face scrub. I use it daily, it sloughs off the dry skin, I mean I have NO WRINKLES and I attribute it to using this daily for the past six years. It is cheap, get it at any drug or grocery store. I too went to a dermotologist and all their stuff did was super dry out my skin or make my face red.
Just daily maintenance goes a long way and I am a firm believer soap and water and some kind of astringent like Sea breeze (I have oily skin in a lot of places) helps me tremendously. Remember too your hormones come into play with acne when you are older. If you need a dermotologist try Boulder Dermotology in Louisville though. Dr Brooke is wonderful! She is really good.
