Adult Acne - Meriden,CT

I'm 38 and don't know how to treat blemishes anymore. For the past year if I use traditional acne cream my face turns bright red for a day. I wash with Dove soap twice a day and use Oil of Olay faithfully/ I do not wear make up. Any suggestions how to treat my skin break outs? They usually happen during my period weel (I'm on the pill) and in the fall due to mold.

What can I do next?

I really like Aveeno products! They really help take the redness out of the pimples. I'm pregnant so I can't use much, but before the pregnancy I used Proactiv. It works pretty well.

Oh I feel your Pain I'm 44 and still get acne. Someone told me about Milk of Magensia, soak a cotton ball rub on face alow to dry about 15 min do this every other night and it REALLY does work. I only used one bottle and that was a year ago. I still get a few breakouts but not like before. Stop the Dove soap and use a acne soap (clean and clear) works great and is not expensive. Also once a week add 1tsp sugar to your cleanser it makes a great scurb. My face is the best it's been since I was 13. Wish I would have known these cheap little tricks years ago.

Hi N., I am an esthetologist, a skin care specialist. Of course I'm not a doctor but I think I can help. It's hard to know for sure without seeing your skin, but it seems like you have sensitive skin. This means no more dove soap and you may need to find a cream made for sensitive skin as well, Oil of Olay has lots of things in it that are irritating and can add to your acne problems. I use Acne Free which I picked up at Walmart a few years ago. Get the kit. It is 27.00 or so, but it lasts for three months or longer. It has four products and tells you when to use them. I like to switch the products for step three and use the cream during the day and the medicine at night, but whatever you like would be fine. Be sure to use it both in the morning and at night. You can use Clean and Clear or Neutragena or whatever you like as long as it has salicylic acid in it and has a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and treatment cream. I know it sounds like a lot of work but it is worth the trouble to have clear skin again, plus the salicylic acid and retinol found in most acne treatments help combat fine lines and wrinkles.

Finally here are some basic tips that might be helpful: wash your pillowcase often, clean your cell phone with a cotton pad and rubbing alcohol once a week, wash your hands before washing your face, and use an exfoliator every few days (the sugar idea works but don't scrub too hard), and finally if you can find one and feel like giving it a try you can get a low cost facial at a beauty school, just be sure to mention that your face gets red sometimes.

And if your face continues to redden, you may need to see a dermatologist or spend a little more money for Clinique or other fragrance free sensitive skin products.

Good Luck!

See if you can get a prescription from a dermatologist for retin-A. It's amazing. You only need a tiny little bit - I've had my 1.5 oz tube for a whole year now. It's really hard to do anything when breakouts are hormonal. Good luck.

My husband uses Neutrogena's oil-free face wash. It's a little harsh at first, but he really likes it and it keeps a lot of his breakouts away.

Oh, I hear you loud and clear.

I've had acne since I was 11. Mine is cystic meaning they're large and deep and require prescription medication to treat. I hate that, in my 30's, I still have to deal with this.

I'd really recommend seeing a dermatologist, having them assess your skin type and make recommendations from there. My skin, post chemo, has become really oily. Accutane is really the only option to dry-up the oil, and I am not willing to take it as a cancer survivor, so I deal with it and try my best to manage. I try to put benxoyl peroxide on proactively after I wash my face (twice a day). In my case, it's hormonal.

There are safe antibiotics you can take to help prevent the infection, products like Retin-A, Benzaclin (topical antibiotic), etc. Really, your best bet is a consultation with a dermatologist.

Good luck. You have much empathy here.

N., I might talk to a doctor. Its probably not the products you're using as much as you're entering perimenopause. Your hormones as in flux and it might be good to talk to someone about what's to come.

If that ends up not being the case, I'd look at cutting out dairy & meat. Unless you do 100% organic, late set adult acne can be from the hormones and antibiotics in meat and dairy. My stepmother treats it all the time and says that as soon as they cut out dairy and meat it goes away.

Lastly - no heavy products - Just Cetaphil to clean.

Good luck.

You could be allergic to the creme you are putting on your face. As a teenager I could put anything on my face without turning red. Then in my late 20's I was going away for the weekend and started to breakout.I had a sample of acne creme that came with my face soap it turned my face lobster red overnight. It turns out the creme I used had benzoyl peroxide in it and that is what made my face turn red. Now that I avoid that I don't get a bright red face after applying acne creme.
