Adult Chickenpox?

I am 27 and have never had chickenpox. Last weekend we went to the Smokies for my little brother's wedding. I didn't go for any hikes(no time), or roll around in the grass, so imagine my surprise when yesterday what I thought was one bug bite morphed overnight into red bumps all over both sides of my torso, bikini line and lower back. I have no fever, and feel slightly off, but functional. This morning a few more had popped up in my lower regions. Yesterday they only slightly itched, but today they seem to be blistering(not all of them) and are quite irritating. I have not been scratching and have been applying calamine lotion. I am healthy with a good immune system and so is my 10 month old daughter, so I'm not worried about complications. I just wanna know if it could be chickenpox and if so, when I should start to notice symptoms with my daughter, as she has not been vaccinated for them. She is a bit whiny, sleepy and not too interested in food, but again, no fever. Plus she just had a tooth come in. I don't want to go to the doctors unless it gets worrisome, cause I know how contagious it is, but am waiting for a call back from the pediatrician. Any advice would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I talked to the Doctor on the phone and am almost positive it is NOT chickenpox. The bumps have not "popped" or spread, now they seem to be resembling small whiteheads, like an acne outbreak. My best guess is that it is a bug like a chigger or some kind of mite, or an allergic reaction. I still feel fine and they are starting to not itch as bad. Thanks for all your advice.

If you aren't sure that it's chickenpox, then call your doctor and see if you can get an appointment. When they first pop out, they're generally on the chest first and then for 3-4 days continue new outbreaks so it sounds like this is what you have but if you're unsure then you really need to consult a physican or your mom. I didn't know what it was when my kids had it but thankfully my mom knew and told me what it was.
Chickenpox can be dangerous. If you start getting blisters in your ears, mouth or extremely close to your eyes, call the doctor. I think the incubation period is 5-10 days but it's been 10 years since my older two boys had it and I can't remember. I'm fairly sure the 2nd one got it after the first one cleared up.
The best thing to do right now is oatmeal baths. If you don't want a mess then use aveeno but if you want this over with quicker then put oatmeal in the feet of several pairs of nylon hose. Tie them off and throw them in a tub full of warm water and soak for at least 15 minutes. Don't rinse off or towel dry off. You'll feel a bit slimy but let yourself air dry. Usually within a few hours, they'll start to dry out. Do this at least once a day until all the blisters scab over.
The oatmeal is perfectly safe and the more you use, the quicker it will dry out. If you don't have too many blisters, you can always make a past of oatmeal powder (put it in your food processor) and water and apply it directly to the blisters and leave it on.
Even if your daughter had been vacinated, she wouldn't be immune to them yet. It takes at least 6 months before the body builds up the immunity after the shot. My middle son caught the chickenpox about 4 months after the final shot and he had them really bad. Instead of the 7 day duration, his was 14 days and he was covered from the top of his head to the tops of his feet.
Some mother's deliberately expose their children to chicken pox before they're a year old so the kids get it and get over it because they can't scratch the blisters and cause a secondary infection. I wouldn't do it intentionally but I've heard it's better for them to get it young then when they're older.
Best of luck and I hope you and your daughter heal up quick.

I would think that the chicken pox would affect your entire body, not just the torso & lower body. Have you tried benedryl to see if this relieves the itching and bumps? I would look into making sure you don't have a tick bite somewhere given that you were in the Smokies. I might also suggest looking at the symptoms of shingles online as this also sounds like it could be similar to that. I would definitely recommend calling your doctor or a nurse line since you have a little one & don't want to unnecessarily expose them.

very odd.. me and my husband and 3 children just came back from the smokies and my husband broke out in a horrid rash which at frist I thought it was chicken pox.. it was on his torso and back and then spread to the thighs then shoulders.. I started thinking allergic reaction maybe? he went to the doctor and they had no answer really.. just gave him a steriod shot and some cream and some pills.. they are slowly just now starting to go away and its been almost 2 weeks. They sound just like yours.. I was just wondering .. what hotel you stayed at? and did you eat anywhere? I am still trying to find a link to what he has.. =/

I contracted chicken pox from my daughter when she was a toddler. I was 22 at the time. It was horrible.

Recently I have experienced a case of the shingles. I had symptoms that mirrored chicken pox rash, which I thought odd, since I had already endured the pox. When I went to the doctor, much to my surprise, he diagnosed shingles, I thought only old folks got shingles (I'm 43). Just something to consider. Good Luck & God Bless.

That sounds like chicken pox. You will probably be fine but your daughter needs to go to the doc at the first sign of bumps. Adults can handle it but the little ones are hit harder.

Did you have chickenpox as a child? If so, you could be having the beginning stages of what they call shingles. Which is the chickenpox virus and is very contagious. When you have the chickenpox anytime in your life a small portion of the virus maintains in your spinal fluid, and sometimes in your adult life stress or other factors will cause the virus to become active. When this happens you get the rash and the itch, but they are also very painful due to the fact the virus is in your spinal fluid and attacks the nerve endings.
Either way if it is anything related to the chickenpox and your daughter hasn't had her shot yet she will most likely get chickenpox.
Hope the info is beneficial and you and your daughter get to feeling better.
God bless,
S.

It could be molluscum(sp?). My son contracted molluscum when he started playing football. They pop up on your torso, legs, arms, groin and sometimes face. I thought his were chicken pox at first, but they weren't. They start off as a small red bump and then turn into a blister looking thing, like chicken pox. Sometimes they itch really bad and sometimes they don't. He doesn't run fever with them either. Look at the blister before it gets too bad and see if you can see a tiny "bubble" in the middle. You can also look it up on WebMd or Mayo clinic to find out more about it. If it's chicken pox, your doctor wont want you to come into the office. You need to call your brother to see if any of his friends or any family members where he is has had chicken pox or molluscum. Then call your doctor and your baby's doctor. If you stayed in a hotel, it could be bed bugs. Never had those, but you can check the symptoms online I'm sure. I think I ran on a bit, but I hope you find out what it is and hope it clears up soon.

K.,

If you've never had the chicken pox, call the dr. now! this is VERY important...THEY ARE DEADLY FOR AN ADULT TO ACQUIRE!!! A friend of mine in high school was in hospital for a month, they were so serious, they almost killed her.

My mother had chicken pox as a child, but 5 years ago,she started breaking out in the lower region of her body. They followed a specific nerve path - siatic for her, down the back of her leg (just one), and across the lower part of her back. And of course, the groin area (OUCH!!!) . They were the shingles, and were very painful, and she ran a fever. Most dr's offices do have an after hours line you can leave a message and the dr on call will call you back, they may refer you to an urgent care clinic, where you don't have to pay an er co-pay.

Not to scare you, but I've known of two adults who contracted chicken pox and it was a pretty serious illness for both if I were you I would contact my physician just to be safe. As for your daughter, other than being cranky, I don't recall it being very bad (for my son) he mostly just broke out on his torso. Warm baths helped bring them out quicker. I had rather they go through a week of it now since no one knows if the shot works forever. I know it's really dangerous for grown men. Best Wishes.

Sounds exactly like what happened to me when I got them when I was 32 years old. Supposedly, the older you are, the worse the chicken pox is. But obviously that's not always the case. I felt fine other than the itching and I only had a low grade fever. I didn't have a bad case of them either. Mainly on my chest and stomach. I had very few on my arms and legs and more than I wanted on my face lol. I went to the doctor just to make sure that's what it was because I didn't feel sick at all.
I soaked in Aveeno baths. That helps the itching.

Sorry, you could possibly get them. They generally will show up about 7 to 10 days after exposure.
