Adult Classes- Tips on How to Find Some

Mamas & Papas-

Growing up, I seem to remember looking at the registration list for classes like gymnastics offered on sat at the local public school, and seeing all sorts of classes geared for adults, some in the evenings, many at no to little cost. i.e. conversational spanish, bookkeeping for "dummies", macrame, basics of basketweaving, make your own sushi, etc.

Looking for something similar now, but for the life of me, I can't find it via google. Maybe I'm not using the right search terms to produce these results. Any suggestions on how to look? I imagine that churches, synagogues, community centers etc all have spaces which are rented and being put to these sorts of uses. I live in Kew Gardens, NY, if that helps you help with suggestions. Tell me that there is something out there or nearby.

Thanks,
F. B.

I don't know about your area specifically (sorry!) but in our area the local public library and community colleges often offer educational classes for adults so you might check there in your area.

Our local community college has tons of them. They call it their continuing education program.

Look on the official web site for the parks and recreation department (of your local government) that covers you -- it might be your town's and/or your county's. Parks and rec departments very often use schools, etc. as locations for classes, as well as using recreation centers. This would be the first place I'd look! Our county's parks and rec department has so many classes that there's an entire online catalog and registration system, so it's very easy to sign up.

Library systems often have some classes as well -- go online to the main web site for the city or county library system.

The parks and rec department(s) and library system will have loads of stuff -- easier than searching on your own. They tend to have exactly the kinds of things you describe here -- language, sports, dance, crafts, cooking, etc.

Also, see if there are local arts centers that would offer classes. These centers may or may not be affiliated with the county or city. Search on your town's name and "art center" or "arts center."

Good luck!

Search under your local community college for personal enrichment or non-credit courses. Here is the link for Queensborough community college and their course offerings. I don't know how close that is to you, but you could try other community colleges in your area, too

Good luck and enjoy trying something new!

We have a LOT of classes offered through our local Park and Rec department. Everything from swimming to gardening to painting....do you have such a department in your area?

I've also taken community college classes for continuing education/adult learning credit only, not for a degree.

Call your local high school. How about the Y. Community colleges usually offer them. Try Queens Community College.

Our city puts out a publication called a "Leisure Guide" that lists all of the city run classes, and our school division puts out a publication called "Continuing Education" that lists all of the classes run by the division. We have everything from fitness to cooking to photography to computers to second language classes, all reasonably priced. Call your city parks and rec department or call your school division office.

Vocational Schools and/or Career Tech Schools often have Adult Education classes. Also try the library, Family Y, or local community colleges sometimes have evening/Saturday classes that aren't for college credit but are more "interest" type classes like you are mentioning. Good luck!

Those classes are offered through our parks and rec department, at the community center, and at a few satellite locations, like the adult education center.
Just call your city offices, they can direct you.

Hi B.,

"Continuing education" is the term you want to look up. Forest Hills HS used to have an extensive list of classes. Also, check Queens College.

Good luck,
R.
