Advice & Referrals on Hardwood Vs. Laminate Flooring

My daughter's doctor has STRONGLY recommended we pull out all the carpeting in our home due to allergy issues. I'd like something that's durable, easy to clean/maintain and looks nice. Anyone have advice and/or referrals? I'm in the Denver Metro area. Thanks.

What can I do next?

A.,
we have been looking at this issue for awhile, too.
I would love to do real linoleum, Marmoleum, but it is way too expensive for us.

we know a harwood installer, through our school community, who is very reputible.
We consulted with him and he even broke down the bill to show how we could cut cost, if we could do some things for ourselves. He was willing to let us find flooring in bits, else where, and install it when we are ready.

His name is Rob Lojko (pronounced loyko). Boulder Valley Hardwood Flooring ###-###-####.

Just a lucky wish on my part is to tell you of a friend who pulled back the carpeting in her 1960's home to find a finished hardwood floor beneath!! Just a cleaning and it was ready to go!

Good luck -A.

Please DO NOT go with laminate. Due to our "budget" I talked my hubby into laminate. A huge win since he is a carpenter (timberframer to be exact). But a few years after we put it in our DW leaked & the floor seperated. It scratches super easy too! We went to a hardwood flooring company & purchased seconds, prefinished REAL hardwood flooring 3/4" for .99 a sq. ft. We put it in to save even further. You just need a chop saw & stapler or nailer (which you can rent). It took us 2 days to do our living room & 2 days to do our bedroom & it is beautiful. Everyone is shocked that they were seconds. It is a great way to rid your home of certain allergens, especially those that live in carpet. Hope this helps, G

There are ups and downs to laminate. Ours has been durable and easy to clean. However...we have a dog and he sounds like a train coming thru the house!! Any noise is ampliphied on those floors.
just a thought

I too was thinking about the same thing with my new house. In my old house we used laminate to save money and it held up to computer chairs, dogs & kids. I also helped my husband & father put it in - VERY easy. The only concern I had with my new house was if I wanted hardwood because it is not a "starter home" and I have heard it is so much nicer. I am keeping my eye on your responses. Please keep me posted on what you decide and why! Good luck with everything!
