Advice for Bowel Movements

My 8 month old daughter has had very small and hard bowel movements (they look like deer droppings). She is breastfed and eating cereal, vegetables and fruit twice a day. My sister-in-law thought it may because I drink too much milk, which I think is valid. Sometimes my daughter look as though she's constipated (she grunts and her face turns red), but I go to change her diaper and only find it wet. I'm wondering if its dietary - something I'm eating or maybe something she's eating (or needs to eat).

What can I do next?

I just thought I'd offer a suggestions. My daughter has had problems in the past with constipation and someone suggested to me to put some Karo Syrup (the dark kind) in her bottle or milk. It worked like a charm and she noticeably felt better. It may be worth trying...

Good luck!

Are you giving her rice cereal? Switch to oatmeal and make sure you feed her a fruit/vegetable w/ it. I had the same problem w/ my baby. She still has hard ones on occasion and I just make sure I increase the amount of liquid I use to make her cereal. Hers were real dark too because of the iron in the cereal. That's why the pediatrician said to make sure I mix it w/ some fruit as well (apples or pears) it helps w/ the absorbtion of the iron so her stools aren't so black. You would think breastfed babies wouldn't be as constipated, but they are. My poor little girl grunts pretty good too.

She is at the age where she can have some juice. I would try that.

Hi M.
I would try some baby massage on her tummy. Make sure you go in a clockwise motion so you don't bind her up more. Good Luck:)T.

If she is breastfeeding, you can increase your fiber intake. Prune juice or Pear juice are good for her to take. My son had the same problems and the pear juice worked like a charm!

When my son was having bowel problems due to his past history of intestinal problems they put him on something called Miralax which is a stool softener and a mild laxative it is now available over the counter and it has been a good send as no more suppositories for him it might be something to check into because the increase in fiber really helps allot.

My little girl, 12 months, also has had problems with constipation. I made sure to mix her cereal with enough water and sometimes used prune juice instead of the water. You might try giving her additional water in a sippy cup to make sure she's getting plenty. You might also want to try juices. Pureed prunes, pears and oatmeal help things move. Bananas slow it down as does rice cereal. With the pureed prunes, start with a little and work up to larger amounts gradually.

It sometimes feels like you're Alice in Wonderland, feeding your baby a little of this and a little of that to find the right balance. Try a couple things to see what works for your daughter. Good luck!

Switch her cereal from rice to oatmeal and mix it with a little bit of prune juice instead of water or breastmilk. Good luck, constipation can become a vicious cycle, it hurts so they withold and it just gets worse.
