Hi, I have been giving my 5 month old twins a bottle in the morning when they wake up around 7am then at 8am I will give them cereal about 2 ounces. My question is should I give them some type of fruit then their bottle at around noonish-2pm then dinner time a vege and bottle? Does the milk before or after their food upset their tummy in anyway? I know they really dont need anything but their milk at this age but what do you think?? Whats your feeding routine?? I usually put them to bed at 6:30- 7pm Also any great ideas on home-made baby food???

What can I do next?

My first son didn't have any solids at all until 6 months old. At that point we only did one meal a day for a couple months before adding a second meal. That's how our doctor had us do it. You might talk to their doctor about it to see if he/she even wants them eating more at this point.

Hello,
My daughter is 8 months old and I just started her on solids a little while ago. I really want her to have more milk then solids, so I always nurse her then about 1 hour later I will try giving her some solids. I don't like Gerber baby food, so I make my own. Here is a website I looked at when I started giving her solids. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ My daughter still prefers to nurse about 6 times a day with a little food.(about 2 times a day) She loves avocados and apricots.

Formula or breastmilk is their main source of nutrition til they are 1 years old. Always keep them on the bottle schedule first and then just tastes of food here and there, second. They will start to take more food when they are closer to 1. At this point, I wouldn't even give solids every day, let alone 3x a day. They need more of the higher calorie milk for brain development and growth. Cereal is empty calories to fill them up and fruits/veggies are not very high in calories to support brain development. By age one or thereabouts, they should be on 3 meals a day, but you have 7 months to ease into it. I would not give any fruits or veggies until they are 6 months of age and only offer one food at a time to make sure they can tolerate it.

Always do milk first. It's much more important for nutrition- at this point food is just to practice eating. At 5 months lots of babies haven't even started on solids, so no need to push it. Add about 1 new food every few days and mix it up. Good early foods include avacado, sweet potato, banana, peas... "Super Baby Foods" by Ruth Yabon has a great list of foods to introduce at each age, along with good suggestions on "recipes" (although really once my son had eaten all the ingredients to a particular "real" dish of food, we'd just take some of whatever my husband and I were eating, run it through the food mill, thin out the consistency, and feed it to him).

At five months old my twins weren't eating alot of solids yet. They still had a bottle at breakfast, after their first nap/lunch, after their second nap, dinner and bedtime. We added solids at around 5 months also. They had cereal for breakfast,a veggie at lunch, and cereal and a fruit at dinner time. It took us a few months to get them to eat all that everyday because you need to make sure they aren't allergic and give them the same food every day for 3-5 days. You do the veggies first then the fruits. As long as they are getting the cereal in the morning (or once a day ) and you are working through the veggies and fruits at lunch , you are on track. It's really about learning to eat and making sure they don't have any allergies. Oh, we gave them their bottles first so they didn't only eat the solids . Whatever you do , do it at their pace and what feels right to you .They will let you know if they are still hungry.Good luck!
