Advice on Camera for 7 Year Old

My daughter really wants a camera for Christmas. I don't want something too cheap but also don't want to spend a fortune as she is almost 7. Been reading reviews of the "kid" ones and while they are inexpensive, seem very poor quality. Anyone buy one for around $50-75 that is good for kids and is decent quality?

What can I do next?

We bought our 7-year old the Disney Pix Click digital camera and we got a sale so it was about $30.

She loves it, I think it's a good first camera. So far she's dropped it a few times (the reason we didn't spend money on a better camera) and it hasn't broken. The picture quality is OK. The picture window is pretty tiny but the quality is good for messing around with their cute software. As far as making good prints, if the lighting is good and she doesn't move the camera around you can make decent prints.

Like you, we struggled with finding something OK quality but without spending a lot since she tends to be careless with her things. We found we were the only ones who cared about the picture quality, she's content to load her pictures onto the computer and play with them.

(BTW there IS a flash on it)

We are planning on giving her our old digital camera when she gets more responsible for her things. Until then, this camera works fine for her!

My oldest started taking pictures at two with a five dollar cheapy my aunt got from a dollar store. That thing took great pictures.

I think you are fretting too much. Walmart has a cute Disney Princess 35mm camera for under $20. They also have some cute digital cameras for under $50. I recently bought a $10 digital camera they had there with some batteries, and a frame to paint for a five year old's birthday. The mother tells me it takes great pictures and her daughter loves it.

A.,
We got a Kodak - lowest end model (around $100 4 years ago) for my daughter and it is still working great. It doesn't have many features but it has allowed her to create beautiful compositions. In fact, now that she is 10, she is the official family photographer and she still uses the camera that we bought her. The pictures are easy to download and share with family.
She was using a disposal camera but the printing costs of the photos were piling up. In the long run, we definitely saved money getting her a Kodak. I think many of the schools use it because it is so easy to use and reliable.
My daughter also learned to take really good care of her camera because we told her that it was not a little kid's toy.
Good luck with your choice.

Last year we bought the one of the kid cameras for my daughter and the quality of the pictures is really bad. I wish I could remember which brand it was, but it's been seriously so long since she used it because it was so bad. I want to say it was like Fischer Price or something - pretty big and clunky with rubbery grips on the sides. Maybe you could find a decent but used small digital one on Ebay or something so it would be good quality for not a lot of money? Good luck!

Maybe start with a bunch of disposable careas. They have great picture quality. After you develope them and see if she is proud of her work, then you could move on to a digital one.

The tribune last Christmas did a great review of digital cameras for kids, I CANNOT find it anywhere this morning, it was Eric Bendorf. Here is a quote from it that they used in a recent article:

"There's a lot out there and a lot of it is junk. For example, digital cameras with Dora, Diego, Disney characters, etc., are awful. They take really bad pictures. Instead, I suggest giving the kid a hand-me-down digital camera. Much better, but not as cute."

My son is 3 so we got him the Fischer Price one, however for a child that is 7 I would think a real digital camera brand (Sony, Canon, Nikon etc) would be better. I would just get a cheap point and shoot model. I have had a son, currently have a Panosonic Lumix and am borrowing Nikon and I think the Panosanoic is the easiest to use and a cheaper model would be great for a kid.

I bought 2 Kodak cameras for my daughters when they were 10. They take nice pictures, and are easy to use. One caution, however - one was dropped, and the screen stopped functioning. With no view finder in the camera, I ended up replacing the whole camera when I found it on sale. Other then that, the cameras are great. I had purchased cheaper "kids" digital cameras a few years earlier and they were never used due to the poor quality (and you couldn't view the pictures without a computer).

HI A.

We have had 4 digital cameras in our house ranging from
$80 - $240. The best camera we found is the Kodak easy share
for $99. It takes great pictures. I use it now instead of my more expensive one. My daughter was 7 too when she got hers.

I would reccommend the cheapest camera in the Kodak Easy Share Camera line, or a refurbished digital camera here is a link to kodaks site: http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=4177...

I bought my daughter two crappy digital cameras two years in a row one was a 79.00 polaroid brand digital one. Very disappointed. Now my kids share my old Kodak Easy Share. The easy share is easy to use and is an all around great camera.

Good Luck!
