Hello ladies. We have been thinking for some time about switching our baby on to cloth diapers but I have no experience with the subject. My sister in law is pregnant and is getting a diaper service but that is not something we can afford. I just wondered if any of you had gone this rout and what advice you might be able to lend. My daughter is still having 3 poos a day! Ahh!

I just started doing cloth at home for my 4 month old, and it has been going pretty good. I don't have a lot of advice for you because I am still pretty new at it myself. My Meetup group is going to have another cloth diaper demonstration, if you think you might be interested. You could always email me and I could give you the information. I have a friend that makes cloth diapers and I am sure she would be happy to answer any of your questions.
Her web site is www.happyendingsdiapers.com I'm sorry I don't have any more advice for you, but good luck and I hope this helps.

I didn't have a chance to read the previous post from Roxanne but I skimmed it. She gave some great information and some great resources for you. I know there is also a store up by Ikea called Baby Earth (I beleive) they sell some Bumkins covers.

I have some bumkins covers, fuzzibunz, bumgenius, prefolds etc..... I so far really prefer pockets for their ease of use and you can stuff them more or less depending on the situation. They make changes on the go more like disposables. They are more expensive though.

Feel free to email either of us off list to ask questions or if you want to take a look at some stuff I can meet you somewhere. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my cloth diapers and wipes. There are some ways I have figure out to make the laundry easier. And while your baby is breastfed you don't have to rinse the poop out they can go straight in the washing machine.

If you are trying them out I would recommend buying some used an assortment of stuff so you can get an idea of what you like. Also as far as FuzziBunz are concerned I was never impressed with their ability to hold in infant poop. Now that my daughter is older they seem to be able to seal around her legs good and tight to hold it all in.

I am sorry if all of this looks like jibber jabber but I wanted to try to respond to this before I ran out the door for Little Gym. Baby is calling!

Good Luck!!!
J.

I also have 4 Small Fuzzibunz that I am going to sell soon if you are intrested let me know.

Hi K.,
We've been using cloth diapers since my son was born, almost a year ago. I can't say enough wonderful things about them!
We are using Austin Diaper service. I know you said you can't afford a service, so I recommend going to Austin Baby www.austinbabystore.com they are at S. 1st & Mary Street. They can help you figure out what type of diapers and covers would work best for you. They can also teach you the best way to care for the diapers.
Also they hold a free "diaper 101" class where they show you everything and teach you how to put them on. This came in very handy for me and my husband.
Hope that helps!

Hello K.,

About 4 months ago I made the switch to cloth diapers, and I am so glad I did. When my daughter was around 5 months, I decided I wanted to try it. A friend had suggested buying a few and seeing if I like it, but I knew if I only bought a few, I would never get a "true" picture of what it was like. So, I searched and found someone selling gently used Fuzzy Bunz at half their original price. This was a good introduction for me. I ended up using them and discovering a whole new world. Yes, it is a bit more work as you have to wash them, but I don't feel it as an extra burden (I only wash every 2-3 days). If you want to write me off-line we can get more into it. Some things I would recommend in the meantime would be to check out the following websites.

- www.diaperswappers.com (This website/forum is where mamas post pictures of their new and/or used diaps) This website is a bit overwhelming so start w/ diaperpin below first to get a feel for the whole idea.

- www.diaperpin.com (This website has great reviews and explanations of the different styles and products) Definitely a must becuase there is so much information out there, and it can get confusing as everything is abbreviated or w/ acronyms.

- You'll also want to check out Austin Baby, they're a great store located on S.1st and Mary that has all the info and main product lines you'll want, in addition to offering an introductory cloth diapering class on Saturdays.

In order to fully make the transition, you will probably spend around $150-$200 if you purchase the diaps used or double that if they are brand new. It's also good to try out the different styles to see which one you really like and which one fits your daughter well. You'll get all that info on diaperpin.com

Also there is a ton of websites out there that sell the big name brands (Fuzzy Buns, BumGenius etc.), but also keep in mind there are alot of WAHM's (work at home mamas) that also make really CUTE diapers in awesome prints...I have now become an addict of buying the cutest ones, and I usually just dress my daughter in her diaper and a t-shirt.

Well, I could go on forever, so if you have specific questions, please feel free to write me off-line.

Enjoy the journey, and I think once you get all the info you'll really like it.

Thanks,
R.
