There's a book called "Raising Boys" that I've heard is really good. I really like books by Dr Sears and Dr Dobson.
I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. Both boys. I'm looking for a book to help me on discipline and behavior. I'm curious if anyone has an opinion on which book "Parenting with Love & Logic" or "Love & Logic for Early Childhood" is best. Or if you recommend something different - please let me know. Thanks!!
I bought the Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood book based since it was targeted to the birth to 6 year old child. I've started reading it and do like it a lot. But haven't gotten very far into it yet. As far as raising boys, I have the Raising Cain book by Michael Thompson. But that book are more about understanding and protecting their emotional lifes. I was looking for something with parenting tips so I would be ready for when the those times happen. Overall my boys are great but I need to be prepared! Thank you so much for taking the time to responsed!! It help me a lot on which book to buy as there are bunches of them! I will be recommending Love and Logic to my friends. Thanks again!!

I like both books and highly recommend the Love and Logic approach. Even though it seems that toddlers may be too young for this approach, Jim Fay (the co-creator of Love and Logic)has really good analogies for how to use the techniques with younger children. I would read both books, the Early Childhood to apply the techniques to the younger children and the Parenting book to show how they transition to grade school children. Classes are also the best way to go if you're able to find them.
Good luck!
If I'm not mistaken, both books are written by the same author, but I think the "Love & Logic for Early Childhood" would suit you best for right now. I also recommend "The 5 Love Languages of Children" by Gary Chapman and Ross Campbell, MD (published by Northfield Publishing in Chicago). As your boys get older, Mr Chapman has also authored "The 5 Love Languages of Teens", and, of course, the "parent" book, "The 5 Love Languages" (SUPERB for spouses!). These books will help you in your parenting and hopefully, you won't be falling into the "Mommy Loves ME MORE" pitfall that most siblings have.
Blessings!

Hi E.,
It sounds like you are in the same boat as I am. :) I have a 2 1/2 year old and a 1 year old (both boys). Between the two books you mentioned, I think the Early Childhood book would be your best bet. I've also read Siblings without Rivalry, but it may have techniques that are a little advanced for kids so young, but may be helpful to you in the future. I haven't read, but have been recommended How To Talk So Your Kids Will Listen, and How To Listen So Your Kids Will Talk (at least, that's what I think the title is off the top of my head).
Good luck! C.
I've read both and have used Love & Logic now for about 2 years with my 4 1/2 yr old and 2 1/2 yr old. The examples and information in the Early Childhood book really aren't that different than in the original book. And, the latest version of the original book has a lot of "quick reference" type of things in the back.
The website, www.loveandlogic.com has a lot of links and you can sign up for a weekly email that has some sort of love and logic nugget.
The thing that helped us MOST, once we read the book and tried our hand at it for a while, was to take a love & logic class. It was a day well spent! It really was great having access to a family counsellor who is trained to train parents on love and logic.
I would recommend the original book, click around on the website, and find a class that you and your husband can take (even bring along your babysitter and grandma!). I didn't see where you live, but Cumberland Presbyterian Children's Home (www.cpch.org) in Denton hold love and logic classes pretty regularly. They were our resource to get an instructor to come to our church for a class.
Also, because many public elementary schools have their teachers trained in love and logic, they might be a good resource for finding a class or instructor.
Hope this helps!
I haven't read either book, but took a Love & Logic course through our church and LOVE it! It has worked wonders for how my husband and I work with our 4 year old son. From taking the course, I think the Early Childhood book would be better for your kids. A lot of the course was aimed for older kids and I think the book is too. It's also helped in how we deal with my mother in law, so there's a bonus!
My sister Loves!!!! the love and logic series. It worked great for her daughter. She was a teacher and is now an administrator so she keeps up with her stuff. She gave me the cd's and a book. My son is only 11 months so I haven't personaly used them yet, but she recommends that series very highly. You can probably even get it at half price books. Good luck!

I would suggest Bringing up Boys by Dr. James Dobson. It is an invaluable resource. It will probably be on the shelf of your local library and is sold at any major bookstore.
I have not finished it yet, but, I find it very useful. I have applied many things that I have read, and had excellent results.
If you go to Amazon.com, find the book. And you can scroll down, and read others opinion of the book.

I have read them both and I love them! And it works so well. I can be anywhere and if my son is acting up I can do the "uh-oh" song and he'll come stand beside me and tell me he's going to be sweet. It also helped my husbands relationship with our son. I read parenting with love & logic first then read for early childhood. You could read Early Childhood by itself but I would recommend you read both.
Northside School District uses love & logic.
I checked into the "Love & Logic" books, but found the following to be more interesting...
http://www.screamfree.com/
(The author has a couple of video clips on his website about some of the things he's been through with his kids.)
The author pokes fun at himself, while making sense of everyday child rearing concerns.
Good luck,

I just have experience with first- Parenting with Love and Logic. I love it, but you have to remember your 1 and 3 year old don't have much logical reasoning. The Early Childhood book hopefully takes this into account, but I am not sure. We do lots of choices and try to avoid saying no (although sometimes I struggle with this) and use natural or logical consequences on our part.
I have both books and love the concept and ideas. I would however, recomend only getting the first book, Parenting with Love and lOgic. I loved the book and wanted more specific information so I got the Early CHildhood book and was disappointed as it didn't provide much more info. ALso, there is a class starting Wed. night at KISD for the love and logic method. Good Luck
I liked Bringing up Boys by Dr. James Dobson
I have heard from the moms groups that both are great and combined with Dr Karps Happiest Toddler on the Block techniques help your amazing kids to communicate with you and one another effectively and more importantly help you to let them know you hear them and are addressing thier concerns. By the way all of these books and dvds are available in your library. If your local doesn't have them they can order them so you don't have to purchase to learn the wisdom contained therin.

E.,
My husband is a teacher and they do "Love and Logic". We do it with our 2 boys. It works pretty well.
I love the love and logic books. They really give you some options other than yelling! I think I have the "Parenting with Love and Logic", but with little ones you may be better off with the early Childhood one since the one I have talks alot about grade school behavior and beyond.
Hi Ester,
My name is Elaine and I have 2 daughters ages 6 ad 3. I wanted to tell you about a class that will be starting soon at my daughters pre-school/church. In South Keller/NRH
It's called "Parenting with Love and Logic"
The classes begin next week,- Nov. 14th 9:15--11:15 and childcare will be provided at an additional cost of $5 per child and $3 each addl child per session. I know that can add up. The class itself costs $30 which includes the cost of the book and one workbook.
I just thought I would let you know. I know they also do a "Siblings without Rivalry" course. Maybe that will be offered after this course is completed.
If you think it's something you would be interested in please contact me and I can get you the proper information so you can register for the class. There is limited space available.
Thanks- Elaine
If you call Love & Logic and tell them what you are looking for, they will suggest what products will be best! I think their website is www.loveandlogic.com-- not positive--should find it easily doing a websearch. I highly recommend taking a class! That gets your questions answered the best!
