It has recently been in the news that "Airborn" is a placebo. I personally would not take a product that is not proven effective and breast feeding would make me even more cautious. Hope you feel better.

Airborne just settled a huge class action lawsuit because it doesn't work.

Don't take it.

Hey S.,

I'm full of advice for you today! Check out http://www.airbornehealthsettlement.com/

I didn't really read much of this but I think there's a pretty massive lawsuit out there for airborne. I'd probably stay away from it. I think the lawsuit says that airborne claims that it helps prevents flu and the common cold and it's a false statement so it doesn't sound like they are saying it will hurt you but they are saying it's not helping you so I wouldn't bother.

No! It's not even good for someone who's not breastfeeding! I've read some negative things about Airborne lately. Here's the only one I could find right now. If I've got more time, I'll try to send some other links.

Hope this helps! I'm not sure why you're looking to take it, but to fight sickness, I take probiotics and an herb called "Golden Seal". I get them from the Village Herbalist in downtown Glen Ellyn, although there are other vendors around.

My pharmacy told me it was so I used it while the flu bug was going around. I do remember a few weeks a go that a report came out that it does not work...here is just someof the news clip
But a "Good Morning America" drugstore investigation raises questions about one of America's favorite cold remedies -- a product called Airborne.

Victoria Knight-McDowell, the schoolteacher who developed Airborne, appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The popular talk-show host even endorsed it as a cold fighter. The product's ads are everywhere, and the company says its sales exceed $100 million.

But now Airborne's CEO, Elise Donahue, is saying that the pill is not a cold remedy.

"I would never sit here and tell you that it's a cure for the common cold," she said. "We don't know if Airborne is a … cure for the common cold. What Airborne does is it helps your body build a healthy immune system. When you have a healthy immune system, then it allows your body, on its own, to fight off germs."

Donahue said the best proof that the product works was that 40,000 customers contact the company every year. But a number of medical experts and watchdog groups are skeptical that Airborne prevents or cures colds.

"Simply washing your hands during cold and flu season is a much more effective way of preventing colds," said David Kroll, a pharmacologist at Duke University Medical School.

Yet the Airborne box tells users to take the product at the first sign of a cold. An Airborne ad testimonial called it a miracle cold buster. And the company said in a news release Airborne would get rid of most colds in one hour.

"I'm not commenting on that particular press release," Donahue said. "I wasn't with the company then."

Airborne said that a double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted with "care and professionalism" by a company specializing in clinical trial management, GNG Pharmaceutical Services.

GNG is actually a two-man operation started up just to do the Airborne study. There was no clinic, no scientists and no doctors. The man who ran things said he had lots of clinical trial experience. He added that he had a degree from Indiana University, but the school says he never graduated.

I hope this helps you.

I would just continue to take your prenatal and up your vit C as one woman suggested. That is the very best thing you can do.

I Love airborne. It is natural and if you use of herbs while you are breast feeding this would be Ok too. You can also ask your DR, if it is OK for you.

I had the same question when I was breastfeeding and called the lactation consultant at my hospital. They basically told me not to take it because there was no proof either way of whether or not it could get into breastmilk, so I didn't risk it. Plus, it sounds like it doesn't work anyway! I just drank a lot of OJ:)

The nurses at my pediatrician's office said NOT to take Airborne while breastfeeding, because it's a mix of so many herbal ingredients and there haven't really been any tests done on it in regards to its impact on breastmilk. Try Cold Eeze instead. The nurses told me anything that has mostly Zinc in it is okay, since your body just gets rid of the extra Zinc.

Hi S., I am going to agree with the other moms. There is no proof that it actually does anything to shorten the duration or severity of the colds... so it seems to be a big waste of money.

We do something in our house during cold season and it seems to help the frequency that we're sick but I can't be sure... i guess it's my own unscientific experiment with no control study whatsoever, HA!

We take acidophilus daily (capsule and chewable form - same active cultures in yogurt, only a much higher amount, and studies find a more effective dosage than yogurt alone). It's basically jsut putting "positive" bacteria in your body to help fight off the bad stuff (GREAT for yeast infections that ya get post-antibiotics - it is the only thing that gets rid of mine - the creams don't cover all types of yeast, and I seem to have the ones it doesn't cover - go figure...). I crush the chewable and put it in my son's morning cereal (15 months) - I even put a capsule in the baby's bottle for a few days and it seemed to lick her diarrhea/diaper rash (though I don't believe the diaper rash was 'cured' by this, but more so able to be treated because she wasn't pooping 20 times a day).

In no way am I saying you won't get sick any more though... we still get colds, it just seems to be less often... 1-2 a season, with school age kids, that seems miraculous to me :)

I would of course make sure it's ok with your pediatrician or ask a lactation consultant - they may be more likely to know. If you even decide that it's something you'd like to do.

Either way, I hope you're feeling better soon.

It was explained to me that since many of these "natural" remidies don't have to follow the same guidelines for testing as other meds there is no way to know how they react in the body and really no way of knowing what will happen if it gets into breastmilk so it is better to aviod them alltogether.

I work with nutrition. I am not an expert, however, there is no scientific evidence showing that airborne does anything for you. I would not risk it, unless the company has scientific based evidence of benefits. Check out their website.

Rather than taking airborne, I'd think about just upping your vitamin C intake as well as continue your pre-natal. Vitamin C will help boost your immunity. I would caution against any herbal remedy that is not under the FDA regulations.

It is does not work, there is actually a lawsuit that has been filed due to false advertising. There is really no point in taking it because of it.

S.,

I don't know about Airborne, I used to take it when I wasn't pregnant or nursing. They are probably in trouble because they can't claim that it cures anything.

I am currently nursing and I take Shaklee supplements. This is the only company that I trust. They are the #1 Natural Nutrition Company in the US. All of their products are sourced from Nature and they do testing for purity, potency and performance. After finding this company, I will never use any other supplements! I take extra Garlic, Vit C, Vit B's,Probiotics and Nutriferon when I am sick. Let me know if you would like to know more.

As a health and wellness professional, No, it is not. They are actually being sued for false claims of preventing colds...plus it contains splenda in it. If you are getting a cold, take some Emergen-C, or 1000mg of vitamin C in addition to your prenatals. Drink 2L of water per day to keep yourself hydrated. Take a daily dose of probiotics to help rebuild your immune system after having your baby, it will also helps their's, especially if you had a c-section, highly recommended! You can also take some fish-oils, Nordic Naturals, one of the top three brands out there makes them for pregnant and nursing moms. I'm still nursing my baby at 8m and try very hard to keep a clean diet (definitely not perfect!) Good luck and congrats!
