Allergies? - Manhattan Beach,CA

My soon to be 3 year old too has allergies and asthma so I'm familiar with all this stuff. If his eyes have just been itchy the last few days, it's not the cat. my son was allergic to our cat and had bad eczema as a baby. It could be an allergy to pollen. I believe grass is bad now, at least where we live, in Minnesota. You could try giving him Benadryl and if it clears up then it's most likely an allergy. Although if it goes away on its own maybe something temporary in his environment that just bothered him for a short time. If you're really concerned, I would get him tested by an allergist. It helps a lot to know what their exact allergies are, then you can avoid his "triggers". Don't worry, all of this is very treatable and pretty common.

Allergies, can pop up at any time...

I have allergies AND Asthma. I am allergic to cats and have been since childhood. But not my entire childhood.
I get ITCHY eyes from cats... and it gets swollen if I scratch it.
It is an itch, that is SO itchy, it makes you go nuts. Because rubbing your eyes does not make the itch go away. Nothing does. It is really itchy.
It is the dander in cats/fur that causes the reaction.
So, although I had cats as pets before as an adult... if I pet them, I simply have to NOT put my hands up to my face or touch my face or touch my eyes... unless I have completely washed my hands first. And, pet fur from shedding can cause allergies as well.

Claritin is good. Kids version.
Benadryl, is good for night time if he can't sleep... because it makes you drowsy.
Both are antihistimines.

Keep in mind, that allergies can pop up at any time... regardless if a person has been around something or eaten something before.

Funny you should ask, I'm dealing with a smiliar situation with my 2 1/2 yo. I have indeed been giving her benedryl at night and during the day I've actually been giving her childrens zyrtec. She has not officially been tested by an allergist, but I suffer from severe allergies and she's got all the symptoms I've got. Itchy eyes are a big one!

Yes, it could be allergies. Dust, grass, tree, weed, cat, dog, etc. Benadryl would be find for night time as it can make him sleepy. My son has flare ups sometimes so I give him children's Zertec which seems to help. He just turned 4 and I've found that a 1/2 tsp a day or 1/4 tsp two times a day work well for him.

The dreaded allergies! We are the same as you....neither my husband or myself have them, but my daughter does so it has been a learning experience.

Benadryl is good to give at night, but it only helps for that night/day. Zyrtec and Claritin keep the allergies under control on a more regular basis. I hope the Zyrtec or Claritin work for your son. THey seem to work really well for many kids, not for my daughter. So, yesterday I just picked up her prescription for Allegra....$63.52 later!!!!!!

Also, sometimes my daughter gets really stuffy from the allergies and when she does we give her children's Mucinex to keep everything from backing up behind her ears and leading to ear infections.

Also, when your son is really rubbing his eyes like that then make sure you wash his hands and face and change his clothes to help remove the allergens.

Good luck....I really hate these allergies and apparently where we live we get the winds from every direction so allergies are worse than most places.
