Allergies - Ardmore, OK

I have noticed this with my kids also. I am using Claratin now and it seems to work as well on the allergies without the behavior problems (my kiddos are 3 and 5).

The 1st thing I would do is call the doctor and let him/her know what is going on. There are MANY more allergy medications that they can give your son. Myself and 5 of our daughters have asthma and allergies like you could not believe. From inhalers, medications, to breathing treatments and many, many sleepless nights.
I did trial and error with the girls, when the now 13 year old was a baby, my mother in law swore that we needed to get her an apple head chuhuihui and we would start sleeping better. This child was taking breathing treatments every 4 hours around the clock and sometimes less then 4 hours. We got the blamed dog. Low and behold. no joke, the next day she was breathing fine, no breathing treatments, she did not need them. She is 13 and has not had an allergy or asthma problem since she was 15 months old.
The other girls and I still struggled. I removed all the carpet from the house and all window curtains as they collect dust which causes allergies. We now take loratidine which is over the counter and keeps our allergies in check.....
I know how hard and frustrating it is when they are so small and really can't tell you what is bothering them.

We were advised to rid our home of toxic cleaning/bath products to help our now 7 year old. We went GREEN and the rest is history! It's been the best thing we've ever done!

She is now allergy free, meds free and has only had one small episode recently. I doubled her vitamin intake for a few days, and she cleared up immediately!

i would suggest you talking to your peditrician first, their other allergy out there to perscribed. My youngest was born with severe allergies. We have been through many different treatments, all stressful, but today his allergies are under control.

If you read the warnings that come with the Zyrtec, you would probably want to stop! I was giving it to my daughter for months before I realized, it really is an asthma medicine, not an allergy medicine. My daughter didn't have asthma, so, why was I giving it to her? The Claritin is wonderful. She works very well on it, and, I was able to wean her off of it slowly. She is about to be 4, and, I don't know the last time I have had to give it to her. She had horrible allergies, to the point she could barely breath sometimes because of sinus congestion, mixed with the yucky eye gunk coming out. What we did, (cheaper, and, under the advice of pediatrician), we got the reditabs, the ones that dissolve that are for older children. We broke it in half, and, gave her half daily. This way, we got twice as much for the same price. The Zyrtec did weird things to my daughter too, but, I notice no changes in her behavior with the Claritin, and, it is over-the-counter, which, helps a lot. They do have a liquid, if you don't want to go the route of the reditabs kind. But, it dissolves before she has a chance to spit it out, and, we have been doing it this way since she was less than a year old. The past year, she has only needed it randomly when the allergens are really, really high.

I, pesonally, had the exact same problem with Zyrtec, but I could tell my doctor what I was feeling. There are a lot of other meds out there that do not cause these problems, call your doctor to change meds.

Talk to your doctor about giving a different medication. If that is causing a change of behavior then the doctor should be consulted about changes. Some medication do have a side effect. When giving any sort of medication for yourself or child you need to look at the side effects on the label or is given on sheet of paper. You can also consult web md for answers on medication side effect. I always research, research, research a medication that is given to me or my kids.

Our doctor prescribed zyrtec to our 6 month old child.....we were told to give it at night because it might make them drowsy....maybe that is why your son seems confused after giving it to him.

Both my daughters have allergies and one even has deadly food allergies. I would be very careful about switching between the two medicines, both can make your child tired. Our allergist said that Zyrtec in liquid form is about four times more powerful than Benedryl, so you really need to pay attention to your dosages. Before making any switch you really should be consulting your doctor about your concerns. I would suggest an allergist over your regular pediatrician for these issues if you haven't already.
