Allergy Meds & Breastfeeding

Morning all!
Just a quick question for the group...

I still breastfeed my 16-mo old son 2-3 times a day (before bed and if he wakes at night), but now that allergy season is in full force I need to take something or I'm just miserable. I am wondering how safe is it for me to take something like Alavert or Claritan and feed my son?

Thoughts?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

When I was breastfeeding the doctor said it was okay for me to take sudafed.

What I've noticed over the years has been that the allergies are the worst in the morning and if i don't have to stand in front of a group at that time I will not take any medicine at all. Sometimes it's more difficult than others, but being medicine free is great.

best wishes on your parenting!

Hello M.,
Good on you for breastfeeding this long and keeping it up.
I would have caution about taking those meds though! Most things even trans fats go through breast milk - so I would also search the internet for more info on those meds (not just from the pharm. co. that makes them) also I think the side effects of those drugs may dry up your milk supply or have a big effect on it! I'm not 100% sure but this too I would check on - good luck on whatever you decide! Cheers, L. - Mommy to 3yr old & 4yr old (breast fed both over 15mo's)

My doc prescribed Allegra while I was nursing. I'm pregnant now, and it's back Zyrtec or Claritin. I'd call your doc and see what's recommended. good luck!

I had the flu when I was pregnant and I could not sleep. My Ob said it was safe to take Tavist or claritin to dry up my sinuses a bit. I was 6 months pregnant. So I think if you can take it while pregnant you should be able to while breast feeding.

I'd call your doc. They say that most of the bad stuff is neutrolized in your system before it actually makes it to your breastmilk, so chances are, it'd be ok. I was just given the ok from my Doc to take Clariton and benedryl at 6 months pregnant...up to 25 mg a dose...which isn't much, but it took the edge off.

M., I took allergy meds both times I breastfed (had to!) and I remember that there was one that was OK for pregnancy, but I had to switch while breastfeeding to a different one.
I want to say it was Zyrtec, but I would ask both your doctor and get a second opinion from your pharmacist. But there is at least one that is safe...
