Almost 4 Year Old Daughter Is Peeing 4-5 Times per Day?

But when she pees it is only a small amount...is this normal? She doesn't complain of any pain or anything and generally drinks a juicey juice in the morning, a small cup of milk for lunch, juice box for snack and milk for supper...Just curious if she should be peeing large amounts or if small amounts is ok? Thanks

*she also drinks milk before her bedtime...and if she is thirsty she gets a drink....she just doesn't constantly want to drink something, generally with her meals or snacks....and she doesn't like water, so I usually either give milk or juice.

*her urine is always a pale yellow.

I just asked if it was normal if she was only peeing small amounts- I didnt ask what she needs to be drinking, and I understand that apparently she isn't getting enough fluids, but she doesn't constantly want something to drink unless it is with a meal OR snack. She gets sugar free juice also...but thanks for the answers, although I didn't ask what she needed to be drinking.

What can I do next?

She's not drinking very much. My kids have milk in the morning, water (as much as they need to refill) until lunch, milk with lunch, milk with dinner and as much water as they want in-between. Juice is really bad it's nothing but sugar try adding some lemon or a small (and I mean small) amount of juice to her water to give it a little flavor.

Edited: you didn't ask but it's not healthy to not drink water the body needs it. You didn't have to specify what she drinks when but you did and I am shocked to see juice and not water. I hope you mean no sugar added (there is still sugar in that and quite a bit!) and not sugar free artficial sweeteners are horrible. You really should at the very least water her juice down 4 oz juice 4 oz water.

Her fluid intake is fine imo. My 4 yr old trained in january and I was shocked that she peed max 4 times a day. I thought it wasn't enough but that's how she is. I pee all the time. She doesn't. My neice is the same age and pees 9 times a day. It just varies. My daughter doesn't carry a cup with her. She drinks when she eats and she is fine. I think its ok mama!
** my daughyer drinks full strength juice and chocolate milk she doesn't like water either and she's just fine! :)

The peeing sounds about right to me, but I don't think she's drinking as many ounces of fluid as she needs, especially if it's hot out or if she runs around and plays. My four year old girls pee probably about four to five times a day but it's a lot of pee each time. But they drink at least two or three large bottles of water a day - probably about 35 ounces a day.

About what your daughter is drinking... you'll always get lots of opinions, just ignore the ones you don't want. Which means... feel free to ignore what I'm about to say: children do not dislike water. They just prefer juice. And yeah, they all do. It's your job to encourage her to drink water because it is so.much.healthier. She's going to give up milk in a few years and she'll be left with only juice. And every study ever done about kids who drink only juice shows they turn into adults who only drink soda. It's a huge pain to change a habit in a small child, but it's possible. So give it a try. If she sees you drinking water and enjoying it (or pretending to) she'll be more likely to drink water.

And just for the record... there is no thing as sugar free juice. All juice contains sugar from the fruit it's made from. What you mean is that you're serving "no added sugar" juice. But even with that, your daughter is getting tons of sugar from the fruit, with no benefit of the natural vitamins and fiber from whole fruit.

her little body needs to absorb fluid - and she's not drinking alot - so she wouldn't eliminagte alot. I'd push water especially in the warmer months. let her pick out a cool water bottle.

I would say you need to get her to drink more. But we have no idea how much she's actually drinking because we don't have ounces and so on.

My nephrologist and endocrinologist both said the same thing (this was last week): You should be going every 1 1/2-2 hours while you're awake. If she's doing that, then you're ok. If she's not, then you might have issues.

If you're afraid she's not going enough, talk to her pediatrician. He'll give you a better idea than we can.

ETA: I know you didn't ask if she needs to drink more, but how much she drinks is directly related to how much she pees. If she's not peeing enough, it's because she's not getting enough fluids.

HTH!

Doesn't sound like she's getting enough fluids. An important indicator is what color the urine is. If it is not clear, she's dehydrated. Also if it has a strong odor, that could be an indicator of any number of problems, but primarily, she needs to be drinking more and peeing more. Perhaps not more frequently (that depends on the size of her bladder, really.)

Is that all she is drinking? Does she drink water in between all the juice and milk? Your post isn't really clear about that. If that's all she drinks, that SO not enough. She needs to drink water. She is not drinking enough water, so is not urinating enough or often. She should only be drinking 4-8 oz juice a day, 16 oz or under a day, and water in between and addition to all that...totally 24 ounces of water a day (Per the information my pediatrician gave us.)

Added- She MUST drink water. Our bodies can't function without being properly hydrated by pure water. That's incredibly unhealthy. No wonder she isn't urinating! Get some water in that girl!! Does her pediatrician know about that? You should really bring it up next time.

She isn't drinking enough for large amounts of pee :) You can check to see if she has a bladder infection, but it sounds like she is peeing what she is supposed to be by the amount she drinks. When I only drink a little bit I only pee small amounts. Unless she starts peeing a little bit every 30 mins then you should be a bit concerned b/c I believe that's an indicator of a bladder infection or something like that. I would put more water in her drinking though to keep her hydrated.

You are right, you didn't ask what she needed to be drinking. I personally was just worried about her being hydrated, nothing towards you. My daughter doesn't like water either lol unless there is ice in it. I want to find those flavored water drinks they used to make.

This sounds completely normal. My daughter doesn't drink much either, never has. And they have much smaller bladders than us (naturally) so while we think they are only peeing small amounts, they are peeing small amounts because their bladders are so small.

Your daughter sounds completely normal. Don't worry mama. Good luck!

Regardless, you should add water to her drink list. Get her used to it. Like it or not, it should be everyone's main source of liquid.

4-5 times a day sounds completely normal if she were peeing large amounts each time. Since you're in a hotter climate i would try to push fluids more--but you would be able to tell if she needed more to drink or not. Some kids just don't drink as much. My niece drinks about 90 ounces a day of water/juice/milk and pees constantly, but she still gets sick like every other toddler i know . I don't think you should be worried at all :)

She's the opposite of how my daughter was at 4. She ALWAYS wanted something to drink, to the point where I thought she might be diabetic or something. But that was ruled out after testing. The dr just said that as long as she was still urinating, she was just fine. But it got bothersome because I HATE public bathrooms and she always would have to go.

If she still uses a potty chair you can try an experiment. First keep track of the amount of fluid she consumes each day and the pee she expels. If she wears pull-ups or night-time diapers, you can weigh one empty and then when it is used to get the amount of fluid added during use. I would also take note of the temperature outside, and if she is playing outside how much is she sweating. Keep in mind that our bodies get rid of fluids in several ways.
I would also keep an eye out on any swelling of the legs (fluid retention) and report those to the doctor.
You know your child best and are the best judge of when something is not quite right.
