My almost 5 year old, who has been fully potty trained since 2 1/2, has all of a sudden started having "accidents". It was random at first, but now it's almost every day. We have not had any changes to our schedule, no new people in our life, nothing out of the ordinary. No explanation can be given. I've tried talking, using incentives, but I need ideas on what to do. What are some ways to get get back on track?

Edit: Accidents are urine and still always dry at night.

What can I do next?

I would consult with your pediatrician. There could be an underlying physiological cause. Your peds MD may refer you to a pediatric urologist. We did this with my oldest son because he was unable to stay dry at night. Turns out, he was ok, just a SUPER heavy sleeper.
If everything is ok with his physical anatomy, I'm kind of at a loss. Sorry. I'd check around the Internet, though, to see if there may be some explanation and what to do about it.
Good luck!

You dont say if this is a girl or boy. while it doesnt really matter that much but girls are more prone to this. UTI/ Bladder infection. take her to the doctor. just b/c shes not saying it hurts when shes pees doesnt mean it might not be a uti hope this helps!

"Accidents" like pee or "accidents" like poop? If it's poop--look into a condition called encopresis...might be.....
Good luck!

We went through the same problem last year with my son who was almost 6 at the time and most of the accidents were poopy accidents. His peeing accidents were usually at night since he is a heavy sleeper. As to the pooping accidents, we thought he was just being lazy since we didn't think he was constipated (pretty regular every day). But, the doctor ordered an xray anyways and we found out he was a little blocked in one section of the intestines, but a little still came out every day, which is why we didn't think he was constipated. He got laxatives for several weeks which helped tremendously. He has also been getting probiotics every day since then to keep his intestines healthy. Once in a blue moon, he has an accident and it is really pure laziness. This was also the reason for his peeing accidents 2 years ago and the teachers made sure to remind him to go before any he start any activity that he liked.

I would definitely make sure to remind him more often and get his teachers on board, too. Don't scold or reprimand because it just may be something he just can't control. If the reminders still don't work, then talk to the pediatrician of your options.

Just make sure there is not a physical reason for this. Just because there is no pain when going, doesn't mean there is not infection. This happened to my friends daughter.

pee- could be urinary tract infection

Poo- could be an infection in the intestinal tract that is causing loose stool. Antibiotics that have been ingested in the past can cause various overgrowths - from yeast to bad bacteria. because they wipe out the good bacteria. Try feeding probiotics. Are you in a place where you can get raw colostrum or dairy? that is better than the garbage milk you get at the stores and can help recolonize the gut.

Incompresis: does he sit onthe potty or visit the potty often but not have sucess, only to poo his pants later? that is extreme constipation. Giving magnesium citrate will help eleviate hard stool problems and get a normal feces or a softer feces.

If these are bm accidents, then it could be he needs more fiber in his diet or omega-3 oils. I knew one mom who had a son with encopresis (chronic constipation) who was on medication and adding omega-3 oils resolved his problem.
