Two days of some yucky diapers and a 2 year old who would rather sit in a poopy diaper than be changed ( Trust me I check him OFTEN) and he is Glowing down there. Poor baby hates all things to do with the diaper change, but he acts like the diaper rash ointment ( its just the creamy equate brand zinc oxide diaper rash ointment ) is Burning him. He screams when I put it on him He Writhes as if he is in absolute Agonizing pain...am I stupid? Does this ointment really Burn the skin? Please is there any alternative that will protect his skin and help it heal without this reaction? Now we have found out that Alex is special needs, we do not have an actual complete diagnosis yet, so I know he is very sensory...I used this same Brand of ointment on my other two kids plus countless kids I have watched and NEVER had this reaction...just desperate to help his poor red bum heal ( the skin is not broken, just red ) any advice Much Appreciated by me and Alex = )
Thanks in advance
B.

So What Happened?

well Not having yucky diapers has helped a lot, but I also have tried several of the suggestions ( and thank you thank you thank you) I have let him have some baking soda baths, I love the way the Beadreuxs ( spelling?) butt paste goes on and comes off so easily...and it didn't burn! Also alternating with the creamy vaseline in the tube and he is all cleared up except one spot! I will definitely try the Aquaphor and the bag balm though, we seem to have diaper rash issues rarely but when we do they are doozies! I am sad to hear that the ointment I have always used does burn, if I had known I would never have used it, the butt paste is kind of pricey, but not burning is a big plus, that and the fact that his bottom is no longer glow in the dark after a few applications is enough of a reason to switch for me = ) Thanks again...Alex blows kisses = )

We were told to use a thick layer of Vasaline. It sounded off to me because in my mind, it seemed like the Vasaline would keep the area too moist, instead of allowing it to dry out and heal, but it worked!

Have you tried Boudreaux's Butt Paste? It's all natural and has worked well for us. Best of luck!

I woulduse Vaseline, because it puts a protective barrier and still let the skin breath to heal.

try a cloth diaper for awhile since it breathes better. A&D has always worked for me when watching kids. my own daughter has been lucky and never had a diaper rash. another question is have you switched diaper brands? I had a friend who had 4 kids allergic to certain brands of diapers.

an oatmeal bath would also help soothe him. like one of the other moms mentioned avoid alchohol based wipes. a great one is the all natural wipes I found at walmart. they are in a green box but I can't remember the exact brand.

I am sorry.... I have been here before! No fun!! I would also suggest a warm bath with baking soda. Let him soak... and then let him go without a diaper for a little bit to dry the area out...

Something I would also maybe try is Willard's Water... it is great for burns, cuts and pain. You can probably get some at Whole Foods... try the one on 119th, b/c the one on metcalf does not carry it. Just spray the irritated area... and let it dry.

Something else is Triple Paste. Awesome stuff. Use plain cornstarch instead of baby powder. brush off the excess and slather the stuff on...

good luck!!!

I swear by Boudreax's Butt Paste. We got the big tub and it lasted us until our daughter turned 2. It is a little more expensive than the other stuff, but a little goes a long way, and it lasted forever! I would use a little on our daughter when she started to get a rash and it would literally be better by the end of the day.

It's also worse in hot and humid weather, so that might be part of the problem. Don't use wipes unless it's a poopy diaper, and if possible, don't use them at all. You can use a wet washcloth or wet paper towels instead. Make sure his bottom is completely dry before putting on the diaper. Change often to keep him dry. You can also try running a bath and sprinkling in some baking soda. It helps a lot with rashes... soothes and helps take out the redness.

Hope he feels better soon!

I liked Triple Paste (from Walgreens). Put it on really thick. Going without a diaper for a little at a time may help if you can. Also, I think your doctor can prescribe something. The hospitals use these cloths, rather than wipes, that aren't pre-moistened - just very soft and they told me to use warm water with it. It's a little messier but some kind of very soft cloth (baby washcloths?) might help rather than the usual store-bought wipes. I, too, have had babies with raw, bleeding bottoms who scream when it's diaper-changing time. It's so hard for them and us!

Might sound crazy, but try bag balm. Its used for cow udders and its the ONLY thing I have ever used for my kids. My daughter was in the hospital at 8 months and they gave her meds to maker her go to the bathroom, which led to the worst case of diaper rash I have ever seen. Her butt was bleeding, so they gave me their A&D ointment or something like that, and she too screamed like I was killing her. Switched to the bag balm as soon as she came home (after 2 days of the other ointment) and the rash was gone by that night, plus she never even flinched when I used it. You can get it at Walgreens or at your local grain elevator, or a place that sells livestock supplies. Hope that helps.

Aquaphor! It is great. It is a petroleum based product not a zinc based one. Baby powder would also be helpful (unless he has any kind of nreathing or lung problems). I always use powder. When my son starts getting red I alternate every diaper change by using aquaphor and powder with a zinc based cream and powder. He doesn't care for having either cream put on. I think it's because they are cold and feel odd, not that they hurt. Also, make sure you are using unscented, alcohol free wipes, that will make it worse. When it is really bad, you can rinse the wipes in warm water befroe you use them. It is more soothing than a cold wipe.

My mother always used Mary Kay night creme on us. She loved it and said it was the only thing that would heal my diaper rash when I was a baby. You might also try just plain ol vaseline. He's probably just upset cause just touching it I'm sure hurts.
