Am I Allergic to the Sun?

I am 25 years old and have never had reactions to the sun. But just starting this summer, whenever I'm in the sun, even for just a minute, my chest starts to get really itchy and I get a horrible looking bumpy rash all over my chest and it last for a few days. I've tried putting on sunscreen, and then I tried not putting on any lotion in that area. Nothing works. This is weird and annoying. Anyone know what's going on?

maybe you are not allergic to the sun but to heat? Maybe you are getting a heat rash. I would google it then go to a Dermatologist. They can give you a cream or gel to put on it to prevent maybe.

What type of birth control do you use, and are you on any antibiotics right now? Some bc and anitbiotic cause sun reactions. You might want to ask the Dr.

I feel for ya'...really I do :(

Gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that you google "LUPUS"

...then go from there. Could be nothing, a slight irritation that'll go away and never haunt your skin again. Of course it could be something, even a whole lotta something :/ could be just the beginning, progress and forever change the way you live your life.

Diagnosed w/ lupus nearly 20 years ago and cannot face the sun nor expose myself to florescent lighting without my "spots" showing up, and "spots" never come alone, they'll surely be joined by additional symptoms and could easily wage an all out flare. See a dermatologist and specifically ask about lupus.

Get a "sun"-brella too!!

Best to you :)
Peace out!!

Do you get fatigued too? If so, then I'd say yes. That's what my BFF would do when she was out in the sun for more than an hour.

It is possible. I get a rash from the sun, even with sunscreen. I do build up an immunity to it but if I go to another State, I will break out in a rash if I'm out in the sun.

Benedryl helps a ton.

It's called solar dermatitis. It is possible to develop allergies as an adult, even if you haven't experienced it before.

Hello fellow Big Sky Stater!

I have this same problem probably ever 5 years or so. It always seems to be when it gets hot fast and and I don't have time to build up a tolerance to the heat/sun. It usually goes away after a few weeks but I look pretty rough for a while. It's weird because sometimes I almost think the sunscreen makes it worse or at least does nothing to help. But, yes, I get this. I've been to the doctor for it ever time and they can't ever give me very useful advice. The last time I was in Missoula for a wedding in July 2006. I was the Maid of Honor and covered in hives from the sun and the doctor said, "well, just stand toward the back." Great...

This happened to my best friend. Long story short, she was just diagnosed with Lupus. Its probably not that, but it can't hurt to run your symptoms by your doctor. In the meantime, hydrocortisone cream will relieve the itch. Try wearing a big hat or carrying an umbrella when you have to be outside in direct sun.

I get the same thing, but only if I am exposed to the sun for prolonged periods of time (i.e., it happened 2 weeks ago again after spending 3-4 days on the beach). I was told it was either heat rash or an allergic reaction to the sun. I just put aloe on it and stay out of the sun for a day or so, and it goes away.

Found kelsey's mom's comment interesting though about birth control and sun reactions. Hadn't heard that one before, but will look into it. I've been getting these reactions since my 20's which is about the time I also went on b.c. It's been 20+ years, so maybe it's time to check w/ the dr on this one. :-)

If it's an allergic reaction, smoothing on cortisone cream should make the rash go away and soothe the itch. Taking an antihistamine might help.

I hope some of you can help with my issue, have had my daughter to numerous doctors but they have no clue what is wrong with her. I believe she is allergic to the sun but we cannot get a referral to an allergy doc so no clue what to do. If she gets any sun exposure and i mean any, (we have to block all our windows 24/7), she gets a horrible rash that lasts for days looks like hives (know this because i have seen them on myself due to allergies i have to carry 4 epi pens with me at all times) also she gets a severe headache and vomiting for days with just minutes of sun exposure. She does have severe social anxiety and is bipolar so it is difficult to get her to leave the house anyways, however the reactions are getting more extreme. She stepped outside the door the other day was out long enough to let her friend in the house and spent two days in bed covered in the rash which is still there. I am just at a loss as to where to look next since her doc will not refer her to the allergist, anyone know someone with these types of symptoms? if so what did it end up being? Oh and no matter how much sunscreen she uses it does not help.

If you were allergic to the sun, you'd have known it before now, WELL before now. It's more likely an allergy to the lotion, or if you're using scented soap or perfume, the sun/heat/sweat mixture is aggravating your skin.

I had exactly the same thing, across my chest. I went to the doctor and he told me that I was allergic to the sun. It gets particularly aggravated during summer, after cumulative exposure. I just had to cover up and stay in the shade to control it.

ive been getting the same thing all over my body lately. it started with a big spot and spread to little ones. i work with kids so went to the dr to make sure it wasnt contagious and he said its overexertion/heat related and steroids would be a good treatment. im still nursing so our alternative was UV treatment. went to a tanning salon about 10mins a day and it got worse right after but ended up clearing up. i stopped going cause of vacation and they came back.

You might be allergic to heat. It has happened to me when I am cooking and eventually it just went away.
