Hi, i guess i will go straight to the point. I have a 15mnth old and i weened her just before she turned 1. I just noticed this morning that my left nipple was moist. I squeezed it gently and i saw a little bit of milk. I squeezed the other nipple, gently as well and i saw a bit of milk and what seemed to be colostrum. I am so confused. is this possible or .........could I be pregnant.

What can I do next?

This can happen up to 2 yrs, sometimes longer. Don't worry about it, it is normal. My aunt still got milk, like you are saying you have, forever until her daughter was 16 or something! crazy...

Many women can still lactate long after their babies are weaned - years, in fact. The fact that your little girl is 15 months old means you have even more possibility of that!

If you have other symptoms (breast tenderness, fatigue, etc.) I would say take a test, but if this is your only thing, I would say no, you're not pregnant. In pregnancy, the body doesn't start producing for the new baby this early. I think it is highly likely that you are still producing small amounts from your little girl.

I have a friend whose son weaned at 1, and when he was 3 she would still be able to get milk. I have another friend whose daughter is 8 and she swears she can still get milk - and her daughter said it's true! Odd, but....

Even when you "dry up" your milk ducts can still produce.

Hi N., it is normal to still have milk for a while after weaning. Some women's milk stops producing slower than other's. Do a preganancy test to be sure. HTH, C.

I nursed before & that is pretty normal. Although you are not nursing anymore, you will continue to produce milk. I worried about that when I stopped nursing. I was told that you can continue to produce colostrum for at least 12 months after you stop. It will eventually stop on its own. Hope this information helps & don't worry. If you feel that it has become an even bigger issue, then don't hesitate to talk to your doctor.

I think it's normal to have milk for a while after you stop nursing, but call your ob/gyn just in case. It can be totally normal or it can mean that your prolactin levels are still high. If you think you might be pregnant, take a home test right away. Blessings to you and your family.

Ok, I have had two children and my youngest is now 2 and I stopped brest feeding at 3 months from drying up. I still have some come out as you explained, of one of my breast. It does not mean you are pregnant it means that the milk duct did not close up. Mine still hasnt. It doesnt leak alot only when squeezed or very warm. if you think you might be pregnant go take a test instead of wondering, but i am not able to et pregnant anymore and i am doing the same thing for 2 years.

You could be, it's true, but it took a long time for my breasts to completely dry up, and this could just be the same thing. Of course... time will tell :) GL!

I started leaking some milk an entire year after I had quit breastfeeding my son. I called my doctor and they had me come in just to check it out (took a sample on a slide and sent me for a mammogram - just to rule things out). Turns out it was just milk and nothing to worry about. Not sure exactly why it started but I was not pregnant at the time. Anyway, take a pregnancy test or ask your doctor to do it, when you go in.

This can even happen with older women. More common than anyone knows. Your family Dr. will be able to answer your question on that. I have a 26 year old and I personally still have this happening to me. Dr. told me that I have no problems have had all the tests etc. Better to be safe than sorry though.

It was probably coincidence but almost every time I weaned a child I got pregnant with another (happened twice). As far as the colostrum, that itself is not an indicator of pregnancy. I still get it if I squeeze, but my youngest is three and stopped nursing two years ago. Best to go in for a blood test, it is fastest (earliest) and most reliable. Good luck.

It is very normal as one responder wrote to continue to get milk after you stop breast feeding even long after you'll see tiny amounts. Why not go get a pregnancy test done if your unsure,if your pregnant that would be the sure way to know.

Try a pregnancy kit from the drug store. If it says yes, then you probably are. If it says no, I'ed suggest calling your Dr. and ask if this is normal. That's a question that could be answered over the phone without paying for an office visit, unless there's some discomfort involved.

If after you take a pregnancy test and it shows negative, I would strongly suggest you see your doctor just to make sure it's not something more serious. I had a friend that was leaking after she stopped nursing her baby and found out that she had some kind of brain tumor. I don't want to scare you or anything, but it could be something serious or nothing at all. That's why it's best to check with your doctor.

My guess is you're not pregnant -- I was the worst milk producer ever and gave up entirely at 11 months, having barely produced 1/3 of my baby's milk for the last four months I kept at it, and yet MONTHS after that, and even years, I still would occasionally feel a milk let down, and, yes, I did express some actual milk months after. I'll be interested to see what others say, but I bet you're not pregnant.

Best wishes,
M.

That happened to me. It turned out that my pregnancy caused me to have hypothyroidism. Was I surprised! Once I got on the correct dose of Synthroid every thing stopped as well as my joint pain. Just a thought, but I hope I am wrong.

I would guess to say that your hormones are off. I have had problems with endometriosis...ovarian cysts...thyroid issues...etc...and even before I ever had my first child...I could squeeze my breast and actually shoot "milk" across the room. Not sure what it really was at the time...but it looked like milk. Soooo...I doubt that you are pregnant...but get a test just in case if you are worried about it. I would guess to say that you aren't having a period either...to think that you are pregnant...so that could indicate that you are indeed dealing with a hormone imbalance. See your GYN or an endocrinologist. Good luck!

Hi N.,
Dont worry, my son is almost 3 yrs old. I still get dropplets of colostrum and milk. And I didnt breastfeed. I mentioned it to my doctor and she said its normal.

If your worried, go get yourself a home pregnancy test. Dollar Tree has them for a dollar. And they work.

Take Care,

J.

Could be! Or, something has shifted in your hormones. Is it close to that time of the month? I still leak a little.

Hi N.,
First take a pregnancy test to rule it out. Mostly likely it's just "residual" milk left over. I had heard it's normal to express a little milk even after 6 plus months. (takes a while to dry out) Also try not to squeeze the breast for a while, this continues to stimulate milk production and will keep your milk from drying out. If you are still producing a lot of milk after say many months post nursing, call your obgyn. and see if she can recommend a good endocrinologist. (hormone doctor)
Hopes this info. helps and good luck with everything!

I weaned my son at same age and still got breast milk for the next five years. Also got it three years after weaning my next child - you have healthy milk supply - don't worry. Some women are like this and you can squeeze a little out for years. Once you are used to it - know that is your body and actually this is very good. Some women dry up, etc... you are lucky.

You may be but I doubt it. I didn't breast feed either of my childern and my youngest is 2 1/2. I find that when I am getting ready to start my period that my breast get a little heavier and I can express a a little milk. It may be something as simple as your period getting ready to start. Just a thought. If you are still worried get a pregnancy test to be sure.
