Ameda vs Medela Pump

I used an Ameda hospital grade pump that I rented from El Camino Hospital when I had my son last June. After two months of using it I bought a Medela Advanced...honestly, nothing beats a hospital grade pump. It definitely produced more milk than with the electric. If you are able - rent the hospital grade one to use at home, and use the Medela for trips. I'm not sure about the logistics if you work. Depends on if you have an office or somewhere private to take a hospital grade pump (it's actually pretty portable, and quieter).

El Camino Hospital has a lactation center that rents out quality medical grade pumps and pretty reasonable prices. I think I was able to do a weekly rate if you just wanted to try it out.

I use the Medela pump and I am very happy with the amount of milk I've been able to pump. I am back to work now and pump twice a day. I can get 3-5oz. out of each breast. This is my fourth child though. She is five months old now. When I had my first and second child, I had trouble with my milk supply.

Your son is only 2 months old now, so he may just need that amount of milk. Are you only feeding him from the breast? Are you supplementing with formula at all? This has an impact on your milk supply also. As your baby grows, he will need more milk and your body will supply it.

As long as your baby is thriving and gaining weight, I wouldn't worry about how much milk you are producing. If it seems he is losing weight or is always hungry, then talk to his pediatrician to find out what you should do.

As far as the product itself, the Medela is nice because it has a let-down button. This mimics when the baby first starts sucking on your nipple to let the milk start flowing. Once the milk starts flowing, then it starts the regular suck cycle. I really dislike pumping but I feel good that I'm able to do this for her.

I rented the hospital grade Maedela pump and had trouble pumping, but it had nothing to do with the pump. It was my lack of flow. The doc put me on reglan, an acid reflux drug that has a side effect of hyperlactation, even in men.

Get hospital grade machine, no matter which brand.

A suggestion, look into renting the Symphony pump by Medela (hospital grade). You can rent it out by the month of for 2 weeks. I have been renting mine out for 3 months and I also have a pump in style for when I return to work. I prefer the symphony, though. Also, I got myself a handheld by Medela (Harmony) that works well for those car rides to SoCal (that's where I'm from). I pump a lot of milk with it and it's only $35.
