Another Party Planning Question

Is it okay to have a girly theme for a coed party?

So again, this is about my daughter's 3rd birthday party. I think this is my third question about party planning so as you may have guessed I don't have much experience planning parties. I should've paid more attention at other people's parties... Anyway, like most girls her age my daughter is really into Frozen. Can I have Frozen themed party when we're inviting boys too? What I mean by that is Frozen balloons, Frozen paper cups and plates, etc.

Thank you again!

What can I do next?

Absolutely. And if you want to add some non-princess stuff, use the trolls, the snowman, Sven and Kristoff....boys like that movie, too, but usually for different reasons.

I notice that the planners of boys' parties don't worry about boyish themes for co-ed parties. There seems to be a double standard there that I have fallen into myself. I've gone out of my way to keep my co-ed parties somewhat gender neutral, or to at least add a boyish element.

so either ditch the double standard, or incooperate a boyish element. Like for my combined boy/girl sibling party, I had tinker bell, mermaid lagoon and pirates. Another time I did a Monet water lily theme but added a few frogs for the boys. So the cup cake toppers were a water lily or a frog. But I still used lots of girly color overall.

Birthday cake tastes just as good no matter what the picture on the frosting is!

At that age the kids don't care so yes, whatever theme the birthday girl wants will work.

Yep - little boys like that movie too.

And they would probably even like a My Little Pony party. Kids like kids toys, regardless of whether they are Barbie dolls or GI Joes. For parties I always do what makes MY kid, the birthday kid, happy and everyone else just gets to come for the fun.

For sure!!!

Don't even think about it. They will just be into the cake and not notice the plates anyhow.

I just had a party. I always laugh at the end because kids really just have fun playing together and a lot of the hard work goes unnoticed :)

Good luck :)

A lot of kids liked "Frozen", first of all - from the prince to the snowman to females getting stuff done. Secondly, they are 3. None of them will understand that this is a "theme". Third, I think it's okay to expand our definition of what's for girls and what's for boys - that will help our daughters if they think it's okay to like trucks and play sports seriously, and it will help our sons if they think it's okay to be considerate and gentle. Fourth, it's your house.

It's fine. This is very common in preschool and even kindergarten. Parents often invite the whole class, and sometimes the theme is princess or Hello Kitty. As the mom of 2 boys, the usually notice that there's a lot of pink, but it's a party ... with cake! What's not to like?

Frozen at least has Kristoff and Sven and Olaf. You can really go either way with this theme. There are plenty of products that focus on the sisters, but there are also lots of products that are blue or neutral colors and include the mail characters.

But a girl's party really can have a girl's theme.

My son liked Frozen (I personally thought it was horribly drawn with incredibly ridiculous body images and way too loud, but he liked it). Three year olds couldn't care less what is on their plates and cups as long as there is cake and ice cream. And you don't need different favors for boys and girls. How awful to limit them so early.

My most honest answer to this question would be.. it's YOUR house, your party and you can do whatever you want :)
now........ will some think it appropriate that it's Frozen theme when inviting boys.... possibly,, BUT at 3, it's still pretty young for even boys to care about that kind of stuff..
also.. I tend to think that IF any party is fun........ no matter the theme, then everyone else will enjoy it too..
Oh and I once hosted an Ice Cream social at my son's school... one of the biggest hits was when I brought in over a 100 balloons that had been blown up.... I unleashed the balloons as it were :) from over-sized bags.. do you know the little kids LOVED I mean absolutely LOVED playing with those balloons.. they tossed them up, they ran with them... they hit them back and forth.. so don't worry about the theme.. IF you get a bunch of balloons and have a room or outside area where the kids can enjoy them.... Frozen or not... those kids will have a blast..

good luck

For our 4th birthday party it was a princess party, everyone brought dress up stuff and I supplied stuff that we had at my child care center in the pretend play area.

I took fabric for the boys to make capes and when I got the foam crown kits at Hobby Lobby I made sure some of them looked masculine and not lacy. I brought jewels and rick rack, glitter and sequins, tiny rope and things that looked like boy stuff.

The kids spent half an hour making their crowns then they had their dress up clothes and crowns on for pictures. I had a door cover that was a castle in the distance and a meandering path up to it. So they each got to take a photo to take home in front of it.

We had a castle shaped cake from Walmart, it was a huge disappointment. It was TINY! I barely had enough cake for everyone. Everyone brought snacks to put out for the kids, we were all friends who'd been to each others houses and we'd done play dates at each others homes and all sorts of activities together. So I had a very casual party. I had about 20 kids there and probably 10 parents. We had a blast. The kids ran amok at the park and wore themselves out "flying with their capes" and "twirling" their princess dresses.

They still think it was the best party ever.

I think you are worrying a lot about this. Please know that you can get caught up in the drama of planning a party.

The party should be fun. The whole process should be fun, for you and the kiddo. Please don't get caught up in trying to plan a huge ornate extravagant party. Your child is young, they will enjoy having cake and opening presents. That's the whole thing to her. She won't care about anything else.

Anything else that YOU do is for the adults at the party that will "see you" and judge you on what a good or bad party it was. They really don't matter. You should get to sit down and let the kids go have fun. I think kids this age need to just be kids and run around playing. Let them have fun then run over and gobble cake then run off to play then run back to rip up the packages then run off to run amok.

We went to lots of co-ed Frozen parties this year. Probably 5-6 different ones. Party City sells Olaf plates, cups, etc if you want something that isn't girly.

My son asked for an Elsa cake for his 6th birthday. Boys like frozen too! I ended up getting cupcakes from Target that has rings with the different frozen characters. All the kids at his school loved it.
