Another Potty Training ? Since I Am on the Subject- This Time for a Puppy.

Since I am on the subject with my previous question in regards to my daughter, I thought I would go ahead and post this question as well. Our family just got a puppy, a male Yorkie, and I have no idea how to potty train a puppy. I have always had a dog that was potty trained before getting him. I am sure the Internet is a good resource but thought I would ask you guys first for any tips you have from experience.

Besides getting the puppy to learn how to potty outside, how do you also train it to newspaper? Is it possible to do both? Of course, I want it to go outside and let us know when he has to go when we are home but I don't want to leave him in the crate when we are gone. I would like to leave him out, and have him do his business on the newspaper. Oh and what is the difference between newspaper and the potty pads I have seen in the store? How long does it usually take to train a puppy.

We are in a rental house so a doggy door is not an option at this time.

Thanks so much,
J.

My friends use puppy pee pee pads. They said it works, Also to train outside use treats. Everytime the puppy goes poopy outside he gets a treat. I use this idea with my kids. For pee pee in the potty they get to put a sticker on the mirror, for poopy my son got a hot weels car. If he went in his pants he got his cars taken away until he went in the potty again.

Go with the crate for house breaking. It is supposed to keep him from going when he's not supposed to though you may have some crate accidents as well. Once he is fully housebroken you can decide if you want him to have run of the house. It's like you're being trained as well. Up in the AM: outside, eats: outside, playing: outside, lots of water: outside, before bed: outside. Use a leash every time you take him outside as well so you can control where he goes know when he goes. Then use lots of praise! (Don't do treats or you'll create another problem.) The wee wee pads are supposed to have some sort of pheromone that encourages them to use them. We got desperate with our dog and even used them outside to encourage him to go outside instead of the apartment. They are more absorbent than newspapers are and I think they contained the smell a little better, plus newspaper ink bleeds! It can be frustrating but he and you will get the hang of it just give it a few weeks and good luck!

With our last dog, we used the puppy pads. They are pretty absobent. Start by putting it close to where he sleeps. Then, gradually move it farther and farther away until it's by the back door. When you see him go for the door to pee, put him outside. After a few days, move the puppy pad outside until he learns to go the door to go outside. It worked for us, but of course there were accidents. It takes a lot of patience.

Get a crate for times when you are not at home. When you are home take him outside consitently and of course after meals and drinking. With my 1st dog, we were in an apartment and used the puppy pads as well as the frequent potty breaks, and once he got used to that we moved it closer and closer to the door until he got the idea and eventually got rid of the pads all together. Hope this gives you a few ideas.

Hi J.- when we first got our 100 pound dog as a pup, I read up on how to potty train a dog and evan asked my vet. You need to buy a crate, one that is the same size as the dog. Put the dog in the crate when u leave or when the dog will not be supervised. Let the dog out when u get home and take him/her straight outside to use the potty. You need to stay out there with them until they finaly do go potty. After a week or two your pup should be potty trained. The reason a crate works so well and so fast is that they will not lay where they go potty. That is why u buy a crate that is no bigger than them. The potty pads work also but for some reason dogs won't pop on them. Our dog was potty trained in 4 days!!! Puppies also need to be let out to potty every 2-4 hours cause their bladder is still small. When we crate trained our dog I was able to come once a day at lunch and let him out. I am 30 now and in my lifetime I have had 5 dogs. Right now I have got 2 dogs and 1 cat. The crate training may sound mean, but it is temporary and works faster and better than any other method I have tried. Good luck to your new pup and daughter.

It took a yr for me to train my shih tze and she still will have accidents. Train with Treats. Every time she does something good give her a treat. My dog does all sorts of tricks. But if I do not see the signs or some times she just goes to the door to go out and I miss it then she will go in side. Also do not let them hoarst around outside. Take it on a leash where you want it to go every time. Wait a min or so and come back in. Now if I could train her not to run off when the front door opens I would be happier. G. W
