So I posted earlier about my son might have dyslexia. My concerns for this is he has always struggled with reading & writing. He does great at school but since kindergarten his teachers say same thing that I notice at home. He struggles, gets frustrated and shuts down. He did do summer school after kindergarten for reading as well as in 1st grade he did tutoring after school for reading. We work really hard with him to read, and he still struggles. He has mixed up letters, d & b, he has also done numbers backwards like 9. He has hot better with lots of hard work. I have asked teacher this year about dyslexia and he shrugged it off and said he is behind but will catch up its normal. He complained about his eyes hurting or headaches and dizzy while or after reading. I talked to his pediatrician and she sent him to ped eye doctor who checked him out & said his eyes are fine for his age. So after reading some on dyslexia my son has symptoms, so Monday I am calling his pediatrician to schedule him getting checked for this. I do not want to go thrugh his school, due to I have already have had issues and them listening to me. I have heard to about them not doing testing right. So I want to have him checked and tested by private place outside of school. So anyone in Boise ID that you have taken your kids to that you like and trust to do a good job. Any info would be great. Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks for advise. I did call a place and they wanted $350.00 out of pocket not covered by any insurance to do testing :( I cant afford that right now, so I called his ped doc and they said best advise right now is to call school and see if they test. Was wanting to go outside of school, but guess will start there. I called and the school therapist is in on Wed and Thursdays so I will call tomorrow to discuss testing, and keep my fingers crossed they test and will test correctly. I am still going to look into other outside places to test him as well, just in case and see if I cant find something more affordable. Thanks again for advise

They have a list of all certified behavioral optometrists. They look at so much more than 20/20 vision. Eye tracking, colorblind, eyes working together, depth perception, etc. Vision therapy or special glasses with prisms are possible solutions to eye issues. A friend's son with dyslexia saw one, and after 10 vision therapy sessions was not behind in reading anymore - was actually ahead. Amazing. Good luck to you!

I don't have suggestions for places, but I do have some suggestions. My son has mild dyslexia, I just know this due to being an elementary teacher, my husband also has mild dyslexia. For the education realm they do not consider a child to have dyslexia or the need to test for it until they are in 3rd to 4th grade. They do this because most children reverse their numbers and letters.
That being said, here are couple tests you can have him do.. first make a list of simple words that are easily turned around. For example, no and on, of, not, etc. Have him recite these words to you. Also make a list of letters and numbers 6,9, 3, E, b, d, p, q, g etc. and have him recite those to you as well. If he mixes these up you are pretty sure that he will have dyslexia.

Now, a way to help him is to have him do visualization. What you do is have him take a letter, a word, a number, etc. and have him write and say the word in the air. Make it big in the air and have him either say the word sounding it out, or the letter by saying and sounding it out, or the number.
For reading you can get either a ruler that highlights a line of words as he reads, or just use a simple ruler, depends on how hard he struggles. Have him underline just that row of words and have him read. This will help his brain to focus on just 1 line or reading and will also help him to get the words correctly.

I do not live in your area, but I did a search for a specialist in the area of visual processing disorders located near the Boise area. These visual specialists aren't the same as an optomitrist, but are experts who help kids with sensory processing disorders (dyslexia and related disorders can be determined by someone like this). This is what I found:

Here is an optometrist who apparently also specializes in sensory integration therapy:

Here is another great resource for a very well recieved home program you can use to help improve with academics/school in the interim:

As a fromer SPED TEACHER, the Dr does not do these kind of tests-----a Special Education Teacher does as they are trained to give the test and interpret the conclusions. DRs. are not trained in such, thus do not rely on them for such an exam---they are medical Drs., not teachers, Special Learning Educators or trained school personel.
YEars ago we used the Woodcock II, yet I do not know if they still use this today---it was a good and adequate test though.

IF there is A Sylvan Learning Center in your area---they can also conduct these type of educational tests. Prayfully your school has Special Education classes, not just a resource room. If not Sylvan has helped many many learning disabled children catch up, learn and grow academically! Yes It is highly recommended.
