DD just started amoxicillin for an ear infection, and I'd like to prevent the yeast infection that's likely to follow. But she won't touch yogurt. Anything else I can give her?

What can I do next?

Someone else may have mentioned this but you can get probiotics at the health food store or online, for kids...it's a powder you can mix into anything - pudding or applesauce or whatever she'll eat.

You can buy powdered probiotics (the good bacteria found in yogurt) at Whole Foods Market - I use the All Flora brand.
I mix it into water and my DD loves it. She asks for it (although that's probably because I take some every day - I can't do dairy, and this is how I get my dose of probiotics). If your DD doesn't like it in the water, try juice. I give about 1/4 tsp mixed with a small amount of wataer once a day - for use during antibiotics, I would give that amount 2X/day.

Feel free to e-mail me dierectly if you have any Q - I would be glad to help!

My son won't eat yogurt either. I give him dry and tasty acidophilus, but you can buy various supplements of this nature. On the pricey side, a bit, but they do a lot of good, so I give in to these expenses.

Whole foods has several probiotic products specifically for kids. I got Yummydopholis ($14 in the vitamin section fridge--keep refridgerated!). Tastes like candy... I also found some different flavored probiotic candy bars (don't know if this makes any sense though!!!) in the fridge section near the yogurt. I saw a bunch of stuff there! look around and ask.

You can find a powdered form of live cultures at health food stores. Then you can just sprinkle it on her food.
I take pills everyday that contain live cultures. I was getting yeast infections twice a month and they weren't responding to medications. The pills prevent more infections.
I would think the powder is the same as what is in the pills- so this should prevent the infection for your daughter.
Good luck,
S.

Chewable or dissolvable acidophilus. Give these to her as far apart as possible from the actual antibiotic. Good luck!

ascidophilous (SP?)you can get it in liquid form specifically for children at whole food stores. I have given it to my kids on the rare occations they have needed antibiotics. Tastes great, kinda like a smoothie.

Purchase some probiotics that you can hide in her food I'm sure you can find some a health store. Cranberry juice is good for UTIs so it might be worth a shot too.

Hi K.,

Will she drink yogurt in a fruit smoothie? I use frozen melon, blueberries or strawberries with yogurt and a little orange or cranberry juice - delicious.

Good luck!

You can buy L. acidophilus at the health food store and put it into whatever she'll eat. It's tasteless and found in powder form. I suggest apple sauce or anything mushy!

I know cranberry juice helps a lot with urinary tract infections but with all the antioxidants in it maybe it will help alleviate the yeast infection that usually follows amoxcillin use. I am not really sure though as I have always been lucky enough not to get yeast infections after taking amoxicillin myself. Maybe webmd.com will have some food ideas on prevention of yeast infections. I go to that site to check out anything I don't understand and find it very helpful most of the time. Good luck.

How about trying the yogurt in a more appetizing way?
My 3yo grandson had the same problem also constipation and would not eat yogurt.
So I mix 1/2 cup yogurt ( plain) 1/2 cup juice ( he prefers white grape/peach mixture) 1/2 cup frozen cubed fruits ( papaya, mango, peach, few strawberries and blueberries) and a dash of nutmeg. This is his breakfast with a piece of toast and 1/4 grapefruit.
No more yeast infections, no more constipation.
I am sure there are other ways to prepare the yogurt in a way acceptable to your child.
Best wishes and God bless
Grandmother Lowell
