We're looking to get the vents in our house cleaned in the next week and there are so many companies out there. The ads have so many different prices in them...I'm hoping you can tell me what you paid when you had your vents cleaned.
Thanks so much! :)

I recommend going with a known, trusted company like Sears instead of just going for the cheapest. We had our ducts cleaned before our daughter was born and used a company that advertised in the Val-Pack (can't remember their name, but they advertise under several different names). The guy first tried to scam me into an additional $900 in "mold treatment" because he said he found mold in our ducts. All houses have some mold and I'm allergic to mold, so if we really did have an issue, I would know it. His "mold test" was a tube of some liquid that turned purple when he put a swab in it. For all I know, it was food coloring. When I refused the additional cleaning, they refused to use sanitizer in our ducts, even though it was stated on the coupon that the deal included sanitizing. He even tried to tell me we would have to pay extra for them to clean their equipment, so as not to spread our "mold" to other houses. Basically, I paid the price the coupon quoted and kicked them out of our house. Now here's the real stinker in all of this-about 4 days later, I got a call from Southwest Airlines that someone had used my AMEX card to buy a plane ticket, but they canceled it because they didn't think it was me. I called AMEX that night and discovered an additional charge for a locksmith made about an hour earlier than the airline ticket purchase. I paid the duct cleaners with my AMEX and they were the only company I paid using that card that was not a well-known, trusted and secure company. All the other recent purchases on that card were national corporations, but all the fraudulent charges were made locally here in Phoenix.
The next time we have our ducts cleaned, I will only use Sears and pay whatever they want, because it isn't worth the hassle of scams, theft and just letting shady people into my home to save a few bucks.
Good luck!

I had the chimney cleaned about 5 years ago and we paid a couple hundred bucks. We just removed the barbie castle and look forward to using it again. My pricing is probably from too long ago to compare. Also, I am in LV.

Not sure where Westchester is, but we used Duct Masters and they were great. They're in Lincolnshire. They will give you an estimate over the phone, but be prepared to answer a lot of questions about how many vents you have, what kind of furnace, age of house, etc. etc. It cost us a couple hundred bucks, don't recall exactly.

We had ours cleaned about a year ago and I think it cost about $250. It would have cost more if we had a bigger house with more vents, I think that was the minimum price for up to 12 vents.

The company who did it also does carpet cleaning & other things like that. We found out about them because a neighbor had their ducts cleaned and the workers hung ads on all the doors on the street, so we were able to talk to our neighbor and get a good recommendation.

When the guys were cleaning they had a wireless camera inside the furnace so we could actually see how much gunk was getting sucked out. Nasty!

we used a company last year recommended to us, not one of those out of the discount papers. It cost us something like 160, but it is based on the square feet of the house. Wish I could remember the company's name!

Do not use any of those taht advertise in the papers. Call a few companies, Sears is a good suggestion, and get quotes. If they don't ask a ton of questions about the duct work, don't consider them. And since you are in Westchester, be careful about what they try to tell you. Everyone around here knows that Westchester flooded this summer so someone might try to take you for a ride. You should also take a look yourself at the duct work to see just how bad it is--there should be a few open places near the furnace (in the basement maybe?) that you can look into.
BTW, a neighbor who works in construction ad remodeling once told my husband that you cannot disinfect duct work, so don't fall for the extra cost.
