Any Ideas What It Could Be?

My daughter just turned 2 last month and I noticed she is getting her molars in. For the past couple of weeks she has been cranky. Well this past Friday she started to sneeze a lot and I noticed she had a bit of a cough. Well now for the past couple of night's she has been coughing only about an hour after I put her to sleep. She will cough for about 5 minutes off and on then wake herself up cause of the coughing, get mad cause she is awake and then goes back to sleep and that's it. She has no fever, no runny nose nothing. I would never know she wasn't feeling good if she is sick cause she doesn't act sick at all. Should I take her to the Doctor's or is it allergies? She hasn't been sneezing anymore and the cough is dry. Is it because she is getting her teeth in and she has dripping? Any advice would be great. Normally I would of rushed her to the Doctor but she has no other symptoms other than a cough when she sleeps that last for about 5 minutes.

Thank you,
R. J.

Wow. We have VERY similar stories! My son began teething early and I noticed that he drooled a lot. Could she be producing excessive saliva and choking a little ? I would try to have her sleep on her side and see if this helps the situation. It would rule out this possibility, anyway. Good luck!

Molars and teething often cause increased salivation. In the absence of fever, or even with a low grade (99-100)temp (normal in teething)consider elevating the head of the crib 30-45 degrees. Shove a pillow UNDER the mattress, to assist your child's ability to handle secretions and increase respiratory function at night.

R.,

when my children and my nieces were teething, they would get coughs, runny noses, and act like they were getting sick with a cold or a sinus infection. for them, it was just part of teething. i would wait it out.

my doctor told me that so long as there is no mucus, or the mucus is clear, there is nothing to worry about. if it changes color, or if she starts to run a fever, then i would definitely say that you need to take her to the doctor.

Hi R.,

I have 2 boys and they get the same thing all the time. It may be an ear Infection. Everytime I take my kids to the Dr. thinking it might be allergies or just a cold and it has lasted a long time, it is always an ear infection. First it starts as the dry cough and the waking up at night and slowly evolves into a runny nose and then a sinus infection that gets into their ears and becomes infected. Take her to the Dr. and just rule that out it can't hurt.

My daughter is going through the EXACT same situation right now. I tried everything to get rid of her cough and I found the only thing that worked was the Vicks trick. Put baby vicks on their feet before bed and cover with socks. She coughed for about 5 minutes, but after that slept the entire night (10hrs) without waking up. I also have the cool mist humidifier in her room which seems to help some. I always thought that cold sympoms and teething was an old wives tale, but it does seem to be connected. It must be that extra saliva that drips down their troat causing the cough. Good luck.

She may have seasonal allergies. I do, and I know I've been dealing with post nasal drip since all these fires started. I know they may not be near us enough to see the smoke but it can travel in the air pretty far and people with allergies can tell. Then again, it could be the teething. Try limiting her time outside for a few days and keeping the house closed up as much as possible. If the coughing starts going away it's probably smoke in the air. If not, it's probably just her teeth and there is really nothing you can do about it. Another possibility is that she's breathing exclusively through her mouth in which case her throat is getting dry. Try having her blow her nose or give her some saline drops/mist before she goes to bed. That may clear anything obstructing the airflow through the nose.

Both of my boys had the nighttime cough when they were teething. It was because of the extra saliva produced from the teething and they were swallowing it and coughing.
That being said, yes, it could be allergies. Both of my boys have allergies and cough generally ONLY at night because they are laying on their backs and the post-nasal drip causes the cough (for myself too!).
It's also a symptom of asthma (my youngest son also has minor asthma), but I wouldn't think it'd be necessary to worry about that too much unless you hear her wheezing or struggling for breath. If it lasts much longer, I'd say take her to her pediatrician. If it's only for a few more days, it's probably just the teeth.
Best of luck!

I have worked with Nutritionists for many years, and have now introduced my 3 month-old son to a great one in the Clearwater area - Dr. Susan Player. (drplayer.com). She is very incredible working with him, and helped solve a couple rather minor nutrition issues that came up with him.

I would highly recommend Dr. Player, her service level is top-drawer and she really cares about helping naturally.

i have a daycare, and everybody was fine friday. on monday they all came in with slight, but annoying, coughs.
by today, they are hardly coughing. i was thinking maybe all these fires, and maybe allergies because of the weird weather. hope she feels better.
