I Never had acne as a teen. I didn't start getting it until I was in my 30s and I freaked out I didn't what it was. When I went to the doctor he told me what it was and how to treat it. He had me get some Selum Blue shampoo and use it as a paste on my face twice a day. I would spread it on the area that was broke out and leave it for 10 minutes then rinse it off. Within a couple of days my face was completly cleared up. My daughter was buying all kinds of expensive cleansers for her face but now uses my treatment. I've told all my family about it and it really works.
Benzoyl peroxide is in almost all over the counter acne washes. The other 2 I have not heard of before. What has helped me in the past is a very mild cleanser called Purpose, Johnson & Johnson makes it. There is also a moisturizer by the same name that helps with out being greasy if the other medicines begin to dry her out. I would avoid oral meds as long as possible but if her acne gets worse or doesn't repsond, Accutane does the job. Scary side effects but it is effective in clearing up skin and is usually only taken for a few months.
If you haven't talked to your pharmacist I would suggest that you do. I am a pharmacy technician and they will be honest about what they know. :)
Hi R.
Have you guys tried natural products? There are lots of natural soaps for different skin types. Witch hazel is a great skin toner. Try to find witch hazel that does not contain alcohol. Shea butter is a great moisturize and is good for clearing up spots. So is coconut oil. Youtube.com has lots of people on who share their skin regimens.
I'm an adult who struggles with acne and dark spots. I've recently began washing my face with a shea butter and honey soap bar, I use witch hazel for a toner and I mix shea butter and coconut oil and use it as a moisturizer. My skin looks amazing already. I could feel a pimple starting to come Friday night and it was gone by Monday. It never came to a head.
Do some research. I realize that everything don't work for everyone, but I would try natural products before using all those chemicals.
Good luck.
Some parents/people don't like the benzoyl peroxide wash because it bleaches clothing and towels and kids are typically less careful about these things. I prefer evoclin. There are oral drugs you can take that worked really well for me but it's hard to get a prescription. I'm not sure what the other drug is as I haven't personally used it however I have used tazorac and have had success with that product as well. Good luck. Ps I should mention that the tazorac can be very drying and to use a small amount (small pea for whole face).
Please have her try Proactive. I have battled acne just about my whole life (since 9th grade and I am 37 now). I have gone through so many different products from dermatologists, some of them even drying my face to the point of peeling. I had those big painful nodule lumps that were deep and would turn bright red. I finally tried ProActive a few years ago and can honestly say that it changed everything about my skin. Not only did it clear up my acne, but it has helped the texture tremendously. I now don't need the repairing lotion and just use the cleanser and toner. The cleanser has a little grit that exfoliates and removes makeup better than any of the expensive products I have tried to switch too. It may actually seem to get worse for a few days, but stick to it and she will see great results. Sorry so long - but I was very affected by acne and sooo wish proactive had been available when I was in high school....
Have you tried proactive? It really seems to be working for me and I'm 37. You certainly have to be faithful in using any product to get a result.
Good luck....Benzoyl is the most popular product out there for acne.

Good Morning R. D
I'm with Mary Kay Cosmetics and we carry a line of wonderful products for teens. It's call Classic Basic skin care. Formulas are for dry, normal to oily and oily skin. I could send you some samples to try if you would like or you can go to my website and check out.

When my son uses his proactive he gets wonderful results. Just be diligent in using it. They also have other products to add to the basic skin care. I imagine what you were instructed to use by the dr. is a cleanser, astringent/sacylic acid and moisturizer. That would be basic skin care. I am not familiar with what those Rxs are you were given.
My two grandsons were having terrible trouble with acne and did all the medications from doctor and over the counter and we ended up getting a product called Zap It which includes a four step program- they are acne free and it worked in just a few days. Both of their skins are soft and clear. I will give you the web site where we found it - it worked for them, maybe it is worth a try for your daughter. www.ahealthcafe.com/support - I wish her well.
The peroxide cleanser will help dry out her acne - but also can be VERY drying to the skin. I ended up being allergic to it as it caused chemical burns for me (didn't know I was allergic to peroxide).
Doryx is doxycycline, which is an antibiotic. I've been on a related antibiotic called Minocycline. Both are tetracycline antibiotics. Make sure you've done your research on the drugs your daughter will be using and are familiar with the side effects. The other drug you mentioned is a topical. Your daughter's acne must be moderate to severe for this approach.
I use Differin and a gentle cleaner. I also periodically take minocycline and also occasionally use products with salicylic acid. Proactive never worked for me, and neither did SkinId.
Look up the drugs your daughter is using on wiki or webmd so that you understand how each one works. Sometimes using a topical and the peroxide cleanser can be too drying, which will actually make the skin make more oil and make acne worse, so thats something to look out for. Most acne treatments will make the acne worse for a couple of weeks before it gets better because they treat the acne under the skin that hasnt erupted yet.
good luck... I've battled acne for over 15 years and it still sometimes gets the best of me. I'm glad I have a few years before my son will have to worry about his skin!
Mary Kay has an awesome acne cream that WORKS!! It is fairly cheap too! I have had many great responses and feedback on the cream. No side things involved either. Good luck and God bless.
poor baby! another great product is Arbonne's Clear Advantage. It also has a supplement that helps with the acne all over the body, not just the face. After 2 weeks my 13 year old is pimple free! my cousin switched to it after years and years of dermatologists and proactive, now it's all she uses and I have never seen her skin more clear. Let me know if you want to give it a try. They have a 45 day money back guarantee so a month's use you'll know for sure! Good luck!
Hi R., My daughters have had some problems with acne in the past. One of them is a cheerleader. All of her friends told her about Clinique facial bar. I was very skeptic, but at her insistence I purchased it. I think it was around $12. I found it at Elder Beerman. I asked for it at the cologne counter. I must say I am very impressed. in a matter of 2 days her skin had made a dramatic improvement. My other daughter needed more than the soap alone. I purchased a 3 step for her also by clinique. They have different strenghts for different skin types. They were very helpful in deciding which one she needed. Her progress took longer, but it does help. It was alot more expensive, about $65. but they last a really long time. The soap bar doesn't even look like it has been used and we have had it for about 3 or 4 months. It comes with a hard case to store it in.
I hope this helps, I would try the bar of soap first since it is the least expensive. I hope this helps, I know acne it so frustrating for them.
May God Bless you and your family!

I was on a benz. cream and tazorac, and they had me apply one in the morning, and one at bedtime. (They told me specifically which one to take when). Because you have 3, you'd better check with the doc to see what he wants you to do. Because they do opposite jobs, you don't want to put them on at the wrong time, or together when they should be separate. See what the doc says.
I second Songofpraise G - Zap It works great!!
My Derm prescribed one for me but I really don't have bad acne so I am not sure how strong it is. It really works though, once a month I get a pimple and with this it is gone in 2 days. It is called Differin and is prescription only. Also, what about that stuff they advertise on TV with the stars?? Begins with a P...can't remember. I have a few friends on this and they swear by it.
havent heard of using three meds. my daughter just recently went to doctor and she was given an antibiotic cream to put on her face twice a day. hasnt done much
