A friend of mine has two children on the autism spectrum. She uses the support groups on cafemom.com.

Honey, more of us are going through it on some level than you would think. I had a niece diagnosed with Asperger's with Autistic tendencies, and then I received the -same- diagnosis for my 4 year old daughter.

Try not to stress. Your son will surprise you with what he will eventually accomplish and each day is a blessing. It's tough, at first, to get past the "OMG not "normal"!" stage... but you will eventually understand your son. Right now he's just focusing on something different. He may not potty train until he starts school (like my oldest daughter, who's "gifted"). Maybe he just doesn't see the reason to do so at the moment. At this point all you can do is continue to love him just the way he is.

With 1 "gifted" child, 1 "normal" child, 1 Aspie kid, and a transgendered son (maybe I should start calling him my fourth daughter?), I'm a very lucky mother. I get to see the entire range of development in children and I get to treasure every moment with my four little heathens.

I hope you find some other moms in your area. Search on-line for support groups in your city. Ask at your peds office, or early intervention services.
I have 5 friends with sons on the spectrum and I just wanted to share with you that they are two of the BRIGHTEST kids I have met. Autism has nothing to do with intelligence. Your son may learn in ways that are different from his peers. For example, he may be very visual and in that case pictures of tasks will help him (Toothbrush, shoes, jacket, etc) when he is older. Also lots of autistic kids potty train late. Please get your hands on the TONS of resources out there for parents of autistic kids! You will be the best advocate for your child.

Oh yes, there are lots of us around. With autism being the diagnosed in every 91 boys, we are everywhere. My son is 7 perhaps I can help you. The online groups saved me when my son was first diagnosed. I'm still online a lot but have a great groups of moms I meet with regularly. Call your local early childhood intervention group to get immediate help. At 3 the school district will begin to offer services so you may call them too.

The autism society has chapters in most states, so find yours in WA. Also a parent to parent support network. You can find both by going to www.nichcy.org . Click on state resources , then on Washington. Look under parent organizations and disability specific organizations.
Autism can be a very confusing diagnosis as there are so many different issues that can arise. The good news is that there are several helpful therapies and many school districts have special autism programs, including preschool. I'm in colorado so I can't help with playdates, unfortunately and my daughter is much older.

feel free to write to me privately if you have more questions. I'm a child psychologist and educational advocate - I run support groups and help families negotiate with schools about supports and services.

take care, S.
