Hi, I just found out that I am pregnant for the first time. My husband and I are soooo excited but the only thing is that we do not have health insurance. Neither one of our employers offer it. I looked into maternity advantage. Has anyone heard of it before>

What can I do next?

I never heard of it but googled it and got this.

You may also wantto ask around to see if your state offers a health care program.. even if you think you might not qualify if it is income-based, you might be surprised and it couldn't hurt to try or at least look into it. In Alaska we have Denaii Kid Care. Also, see if you qualify for WIC - it is a government funded nutrition program and if there is a program for health care they will know and be able to guide you.
CONGRATULATIONS!

You should also look into enrolling in Washington State Basic Health. It's inexpensive and will give you and your husband (and your future child) health coverage.

Hi A.,

When I googled it the program looked very good. Though I have never used it, my advice is to research it and request more information from the program itself. It sounds like it could be a very helpful program. Congratulations on the new baby! Kids are the biggest and best gift ever! Blessings to you and your precious family.

I have not heard of this, but why not have a home birth? YOu can have the birth you want, in your own home, with wonderful care and support from a midwife, for under $3,000. Some midwives will even take some trade. I had 3 home births and the care and expertise from my midwives was irreplaceable. I could not recommend it enough. The cost is nothing compared to the experience you will get. Eugene is blessed with so many competant midwives. Goodluck.

I have not heard of maternity advantage, but I do know of one option that may work for you. You can always apply with Washington DSHS for medical. You can probably get medical for at least yourself, your pregnancy, and your baby through them. That way, you have medical coverage and have more options for medical coverage during and after your pregnancy. When I was pregnant with my son in Idaho, I went through their dshs office and I loved it. The doctors didn't care that it was state insurance, i got the same treatment as anyone else. Washington has (if I remember correctly) 3 options for health plans through dshs, so you can probably even find the doctor you want and then ask which plan they accept. Here's a website where you can apply for benefits through washington and find answers to questions about dshs.
By the way, after the baby is born, depending on your income, dshs may also be able to help with child care costs.

Good luck and congradulations!

Home Birth is always a good option and way less expensive then a hospital birth. There are many homebirth midwifes in Washington.
