Any Solutions for Dry Skin Patches on Toddler

It looks like you got a lot of good advice on lotions to try. One other thing you should think about is how often you are bathing her. Giving baths and showers dries the skin out. Babies and young children do not need baths daily. A couple times or so a week is sufficient (presuming they are not playing in mud, etc.).

It sounds like dermatitis. My son has it and he is 19 mon old. He started to get little patches when he was first born. I use selsun blue shampoo for the scalp, which isnt bad anymore, and hydrocortizone cream on the scaly patches. Its nothing to be worried about, just sensitive skin that she might grow out of. good Luck

Eucerin in the tub works great. Its very thick and stays on. We put it on pretty thick and just let it stay on their skin.

I find it interesting that the day after I have discovered hopefully a cure to my little guy's eczema that you posted this question. My little guy's dry skin patches are pretty bad and so therefore we have used everything under the sun. The best cream we have found to use is Eucerin in the big tub. It's thick and has no odor but it seems to work, BUT...here's the cure that I read about just last night in one of my Pregnancy magazines. Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) - apparently it comes in capsules and if you open it up and apply it to the dry patches at least 3 times a day, it is suppose to be soothing and healing. Now I haven't tried it yet, but plan to pick it up tonight and try it out on my toddler. A woman wrote that rather than the stinging lotions, this oil is soothing and relieves the itchyness.

I not only use a lotion that would clear up her dry skin patches I also found a store that has other product that could just possibly help with her seizures and the very best part is hey are all natural and money back guaranteed. I use the lotion on myself and my 3 children. Hi Jody,

The best thing for dry skin is Diaperderm. I've used it since my daughters were infants as it was created by our pediatrician.

They are in their teens now and we still use it on our dry patches, usually in the winter months.

You can order it through the mail at www.diaperderm.com.
The website has more info about the product. You can find it at the local Walgreens and some of the major grocery stores in the St. Louis area in the baby aisle next to the diaper rash cream. Call ahead if you can though because they run out quickly after they stock it.

I give this as part of a gift every time I go to a baby shower and the moms always call me when they run out to see how they can get more.

Aren't babies wonderful! I thank God for my son...he is such a blessing to me as well! My son has extremely sensitive skin and I do not use J & J products, Aveeno, Eucerin or Aquaphor anymore after I learned about the what the ingredients actually are. My girl is really dry too. My Doctor has recommended Vanicream. I can't find a pharmacy that has it but you can order it online.

Aveeno for babies is the best, as I have to use the aveeno per dermatologist for excema. Its non greasy so goes into the skin well. Hope it helps you alot.

My daughter's doctor just gave her Aquaphor for her son's dry cheeks.
I wanted to remind you that drinking water and keeping the air in your home hydrated will help a lot. Using a vaporizor or just boiling water will help, I started a pot of boiling water just a few minutes ago, my lips and hands are so dry now, I know this will help keep the house warm and everyone comfortable.

I have a 20 month old son who has had dry, itchy patches on his skin pretty much since birth. I have been using Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream on him since he was 3-4 months old and it seems to work really well. I apply in the morning when I get him dressed, and sometimes again at night after bathtime to the really bad spots. He is a redhead (really sensitive skin), and this stuff keeps his skin soft and relieves the itching without irritation. It is pretty pricey, but a little bit goes a long way. acually, the johnsons may be part of what is causing it. johnson products have a chemical in it called quaternium-15. (q-15) actually, it is in most baby shampoos and washes and in some baby lotions too. what it is is formaldehyde (the stuff that they use to preserve dead bodies and tissues) its a caustic chemical and a lot of people have skin reactions to it that cause patchy eczema like flakes. my son had the same issue and i had tried all these different lotions and creams and nothing helped. i switched all of our stuff to naturally based ones and it only took one wash of the new body wash and shampoo for the patches to be gone. go to http://www.HealthySafeAndClean.com and there is a list there of what products have caustic chemicals in them and you can request more information if you are wanting natural product options.

For my daughters eczema we use Eucerin, it works great. For my own I also use Mary Kay's Satin Hands Night treatment, it's very good!

I noticed someone reminded you not to do daily baths, maybe every other or every 3 days... it's also very important to NOT use bubble bath if your kiddo has dry skin. Bubble bath is a lot of fun, but in general is horrible for their skin, and for little girls can lead to UTI's.

Try Aquaphor- it is great! It is like a really thick Vaseline and it is good for sensitive skin. Best of luck with the testing for you daughter.

Both of my kids have eczema. Their pediatrician told us to use Eucerin Original Lotion. You can buy it at most stores- Walgreens, Target, Walmart..etc. It is nonscented and comes in a white pump. I put it on them after bathing or showering. We've used it for years...it really helps with their dry skin. Hope this information is helpful!

Our daughter is 3 and has had eczema since she was a baby. I am a Johnson's kind of girl, but it is true that the dyes and fragrances are awful about irritating dry, sensitive skin. We tried Eucerin and Aquaphor, but at that time I was a beauty consultant for Mary Kay and I tried their Hydrating Lotion and found that it worked very well. We currently use (and love!) Aveeno Active Naturals Anti-Itch lotion (the one without the cooling menthol). We use this after the bath, gently pat her dry and coat her with the lotion. (She also has a steriod cream for the flare ups.)

My son has dry skin too. We were also using johnson's products on him as a baby. I mean, they're the standard in baby care products, right? Well, our pediatrician told us that they are one of the worst for dry skin. All the additives and fragrances tend to make dry skin worse. He suggested a more hypoallergenic soap and lotion like aveeno. You could even try cetaphil or eucerin. And after you lotion him up really good, cover the dry patches with aquaphor to seal in the moisture. You should try to find the source of the dry skin (laundry detergent or something) so that you can eliminate the source of the problem, if possible instead of just treating the symptoms. Good luck!

i agree with everything christy said (and i'm not trying to sell anything). nix the johnson's completely. it's all perfumes and dyes and i never felt good about using it on my son's eczema, then i found out it's not good for it anyway. so i was right. i use a lotion i found at walgreen's, it's $10 and i use it after baths only, and it keeps it at bay pretty good. then if it flares up i use it on spots and it goes away within a day or two. it's called Dermarest. we tried all the ones christy suggested, which are supposed to work, but this is the only one that worked for us. my advice, start with the more affordable ones and work your way up till you find one that works! good luck, eczema can be miserable. don't forget if it gets red and irritated, even the eczema lotions can sting. at that point put some neosporin on it.

cortaid works well and usually clears up skin problems in less than 24 hours.

I agree with Karen's rec for Aquaphor. I used it when my toddler was an infant and she had terrible, red, dry patches all over her face. It cleared those right up. And now I use it on her cheeks and arms, which tend to get dry in the winter.

First of all, i pray too for your little girl to be healthy. I agree that our children are such a blessing and gift from god. I myself get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of day to day life, that i forget to count my blessings, b/c without god i would not have these 3 miracles that i do have. i do have a suggestion to your quetion though... i really recommend Norweigen hand cream. It is very inexpensive and can be found at pretty much any retail, supermarket store, etc... It is a fisherman's hand lotion, so it is very thick and it really works wonders. I use it on my kids, especially their little cheeks in the winter. 2 out of 3 of my kids had a little trouble w/excema on their faces, and by faithfully applying the Norweigen hand cream, it was taken care of pretty quickly. I have even used it on thier lips if they refuse to use chapstick, and have used it for their heads when they were babies when they started getting the signs of cradle cap. I hope this helps.
