Our family went to Orange Beach, AL last summer. It's near Mobile. That was great! The beaches were much better than Galveston, and it wasn't too much further to drive. We got up at 3 a.m. and loaded our 4 year old and 2 year old in the car and got a head-start on the driving. They were able to sleep some of the way. We're going back this year.

One of our family's most memorable vacations was in Wichita Falls, TX. It had absolutely nothing to do with the location though. We involved the kids, we put a cup over a map, placing Tulsa in the middle. We traced around the cup and told the kids that we could go anywhere in the circle. We decided to go to Wichita Falls and stay in a hotel with a pool. The excitment for kids that young is just being away from home and hotels are great to them. We looked at a travel book and chose as a family where all we would visit. We went to a few free museums, the fire dept one was their favorite. We went to see the Falls in the park, had a picnic and played. We went to a "Fun Center", similar to Celebration Station, where the kids could play miniature golf, go carts, video games, etc. It was very relaxed and the kids had a blast.

We have been to Disney World, on a cruise and to New York (once the kids got older) and this vacation to Wichita Falls still stands out as one of my favorites.

I've been a couple times and I've always enjoyed it. It's slow and laid back. Good weather, nice walks, sunny beach days, good mexican food. Kind of a mardi gras feel, the people are nice.

Gulf shores like someone suggested is also fun. They have beautiful sunsets, a small amuzement park spot by the beach for kids, good seafood, was windy and a little M. when I went one night, fun souvenir shopping and close historical areas. I did run into some pretty racist people there though--but was probably a fluke.

We loved our vacation at Galveston. We went to Moody Gardens for 2 days, to the Railroad Museum, and to a Battleship Museum. It was too cold to do a lot at the beach when we went, but it is a great place. See http://www.galveston.com/about/ for more info. We also stopped at NASA near Houson-and that was worth the whole trip! See http://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/home/ if that sounds good. Hope you have a great vacation!

Hi~
Yes, I have been there when we were kids.
I remember touring old houses and the older part of the town, going to the beach and loved the piers. It was awesome to watch people fish off the piers and catch sharks.
Somewhere in town I remember there was a giant chess board for the little kids to play on.
Thats about all we did but I do remember having fun. Good luck!

If you are wanting to go to the beach then I would definitely choose Destin Beach or Panama City in Florida. They have the beautiful sugar white sand beaches and are very well maintained. I have been to Galveston a few times and it always seemed dirty with trash on the beach and the brown sand. For a more affordabe beach trip, plus less driving time, try the Gulf Shores in LA. Same beautiful white sand beaches and much, much cheaper than Florida....plus it will save you a couple of hours in the car! good luck!

It just so happens I wrote a whole blog on our family vacation experience there. There's lots of stuff you can do including NASA, the beach, Moody Gardens and the Downtown Aquarium. You can read the details of our family vacation trip to the area at:
