Anyone Else Gain Mega Weight?

I gained close to 75 lbs with my first pregnancy. My daughter is now 6 months old and after exercising moderately for 3 months I still have 50 lbs to lose to get back to my pre pregnancy weight. I still can't diet too much because I nurse her (but I eat really healthy calories). I am just looking for some encouragement, or to hear from other moms who also gained tons of weight and was able to lose it! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I started working out pretty regularly (4-6 times a week), started Weight Watchers, and started weight lifting, and I have already lost 10 lbs in one month! The great thing is that it has really started shrinking my belly fat! I went from a size 16 to a size 10/12 in just one month, and medium size shirts! I'm so happy. I have only 30 lbs more to lose then I will be close to prepregnancy weight, and I am convinced that I can do it!

Abbey -
I weighed 110 when i got pregnant with my daughter and weighed 197 when I delivered her - via C-Section so couldn't exercise right away...I understand what you are going through - HANG IN THERE!!!!!!! You can do it - and I know they always say it takes 9 mos to put on it will take about 9 mos to loose but for me it took about 1 full year and still working at it! (don't think I will ever weigh 110 again) Keep at it - excersise, eat right and the biggest trick is to drink water! Keep at it - you will get there and know you are definately not alone!

Abbey-
I gained around 80 pounds with my first pregnancy, and about 60 with my second. Both my children were healthy and happy little babies....they were about two and a half years apart, and when I got pregnant the second time, I had just started to lose the 50 pounds I needed to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight! Anyway, take your time. You have enough to worry about caring for a little baby. Don't be too hard on yourself...you will get there! I am just now (with an eight month old) back into the 50 pounds to lose range. Again. Oh well. Hang in there!

Keep nursing :) That's how I lost the 30 lb's I gained with each kid. With each I ate normal and exercised moderately, and by 12 months I was back (or nearly back) to my pre-baby weight.

Keep working, and watching what you eat and as long as you nurse, it should come off slowly, which is the best for both of you.

Congratulations on your new baby!

I just wanted to encourage you and let you know it is completely safe and natural to lose weight while breastfeeding. The thing you want to avoid is the type of "diet" that would cause a rapid and significant weight loss. The good old-fashioned "watching what you eat" and walking 1/2 an hour a day should do it (breastfeeding itself burns over 600 calories a day!)

I lost my weight by learning about calories. This seems obvious, and sounds boring, but I learned tons and majorly enjoyed the (safe-level) 2 lb. loss per week I experiended! You might be surprised how many extra calories some of your healthy foods are packing into your total each day. Learning which healthy foods you can eat tons of, and finding some healthy low-cal snacks, is very helpful! Also, taking a quality fish-oil supplement may help--and it's excellent for your baby too! Here are some links. . . good luck--and don't let your body-worries stop you from nursing your precious baby!

I gained 50lbs with my daughter and she was born 2mos. premature so I can't imagine what I would have really gained if she would of been full term.

If it was a c-section like mine I was told the muscles have to heal and you could do all the situps in the world but it will be pointless until about 6mos. after the surgery.

I was NEVER overweight til I had my daughter and now can't lose it. I've come to the conclusion some mom's snap right back into shapes and other mom's have to work their butts off some go back and some don't return to their pre-pregnancy shape. I personally belive it's more to do with exercise than calories. Just try and walk alot at like the mall or something and push the stroller.

I waited until I was done nursing and did ediets.com. I did the low carb Atkins and lost 60 lbs in about 6 months.
Basically low carb bread with peanut butter for breakfast, lean cuisine for lunch and then veggies, meat and low carb bun type for supper. In between eat veggies or cheese for snacks.
One thing I did to keep me going was allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted for lunch on Saturdays. Pizza and ice cream was a fave :o) That way I had something to look forward to and plan all week.
It's hard but it's SO worth it. Once you get there you can go back to regular eating and if you gain a few pounds just do low carb for a few days and it's gone because most of it is water weight. You'll lose your belly fat first and that was SO motivating to me.
Good luck,
J.

You are not alone. I gained and lost all my baby weight with my first, but with my second I gained about 50 and still have 50 to do. I admit, i haven't been the best about excersizing and eating healthier. Actually, i got the flu a couple weeks ago. Lost about 5lbs and have lost a couple more since. Now i'm not saying go on the flu diet. LOL. I actually sent out a post a couple weeks ago about excersize video's for me and the kid's. I plan on getting one from santa;-) Sorry, not much advice, but your not alone and keep thinking, the weight will come off.

Yeah, you know how you read not to use pregnancy as an excuse to eat a whole bunch of food? When I read that it was like Charlie Brown's teacher speaking to me wah wah wah wah. I kept asking my friends "did you eat CONSTANTLY while pregnant" and they were all sick and throwing up so my experience seemed odd. In other words, I hear you :) It took a year but I lost it all. The only thing that works for me personally is getting on the tread mill and running. You'll lose it all, just takes time. I figured it took 9 plus months to make the baby so it would take that long to get back down to my pre-baby size...give or take a few ice creams.

Don't beat yourself up about losing the weight. It takes time. Being able to nurse will be a huge help. I didn't have success with that with either pregnancy. The only thing I've found which always takes weight off of me is running. I just had my second via a c-section and am waiting until the six week mark so I can begin my running schedule. You should probably consult with your doctor about a good routine for you. Goldie Hawn gained 70 pounds and I think I read that Kate Hudson also gained about that much and they lost it. My best friend in town gained 70 pounds and lost it, without the help of the nutritionist and personal trainer that celebrities have. You can do it. Perhaps a good way to start is to walk every day.

I gained that much with BOTH kids (I have a 2 and a half year old and an 8 month old) I have lost it all plus some already by doing Weight Watchers. I only do the on-line version because I am so busy, but I love it. I don't know if it is something you are interested in, but they even take into account if you are nursing or not when they give you your Points Goal. It is AWESOME...and something you can easily stick with. I do the Flex plan, so if I want chocolate, I can have it. I just have to account for it in my points for the day. It really is easy and effective. (no, i am not a paid sponsor for Weight Watchers!) :)

I nursed until 15 months and exercised pretty vigorously after the first month. I was able to drop weight that way and it never affected my milk supply. If it had, I would have cut back. Perhaps, you can exercise a little more vigorously and just pay attention to your milk production and cut back if need be.

I gained around 75 lbs with the first baby and lost 50 lbs over 9 mths. I exercised everyday for an hour. I gained 60 lbs with the second. Now the second child is 2.5 yrs old and I'm finally down to almost what I was when I first got pregnant. Seems my body wants to hang on to the weight.

I had/ have the same problem! I gained about 80 lbs. with my first daughter. I nursed her for 9 months, then got pregnant again...so there was no break for my body to rest. I didn't gain as much with my second pregnancy. (only about 50 lbs) and it has mostly all came off (+/- 5 lbs). I still have 30 lbs to go from my first pregancy though. Since I am not nursing anymore, I noticed I did lose a bit more weight when I stopped. So, I don't have any super fix-its for you, but you are definately NOt alone! Just remember, it took you 9 months to gain the weight, so it will take AT LEAST that long to lose it! It sounds like your eating right, and getting some exercise so you are doing what you can with an infant. Soon she'll be crawling and walking, so you'll be chasing her around the house burning calories! Good Luck.

I gained 55 LBS with my first daughter (and it looks like I'm going to gain about the same amt with #2). I nursed her for 14 months, so my advice would be to keep nursing. Just make sure you're getting enough calories to not lose milk production and the weight will come off slowly but surely. You probably shouldn't lose more than 2 lbs a week anyway. When I got closer to the end of nursing, I started Weight Watchers and that helped. I lost all 55 lbs before I got pregnant again and it took the whole 14 months.

Everyone talks about nursing helping them lose weight, but I was just the opposite. I gained 55 pounds w/ my first and I wasn't able to lose the rest of the baby weight until AFTER I weaned him. It still took about 6 months, but it did come off. This last pregnancy is the worst. I only gained 30 pounds, but it was all in the belly--AND IT'S STILL THERE! Granted, she is only 4 months and I'm breastfeeding so I'm sure it will take me until I wean her to lose it. It is just frustrating because I am back to my original size everywhere but my belly. That is the hardest place to lose it and all the situps in the world won't help--can't have 6-pack abs if you have pounds of fat covering it up. :-)

Hang it there Abbey--it doesn't fall off overnight. I am having a hard time being patient too. Be of good cheer that you want to do something about it at least and aren't just settling it to having gained extra weight.

All 4 of my pregnancies, yes, I gained over 55 pounds. I am struggling this last time with getting the weight off. Maybe because I am a little older this time around, it is taking me a bit longer to take it off. I never really worried about my weight or what I ate before this! I've always been a little curvy, but athletic too. Right now, I am working on getting back into running shape. It is tough some days because it is cold and dark out once my hubby gets home from work, but I run with my BIG dog and feel pretty safe. The weight (hopefully) will start falling off soon. I am getting pretty impatient with this, though. Take Care, there are others out there with the same struggle!
