My 22 week old daughter was diagnosed with kidney reflux last week. She will now have to take a low-dose antibiotic for at least 2 years, and then be re-tested to see progress. Anyone else have this? Just looking for some support.:)

Although I have never dealt with a child having kidney problems, I have them myself. I have recently been diagnosed with MSK and I am on a low-dose antibiotic. Maybe if you get her taken care of now, then she will not have problems as an adult. Good Luck!

My son was born with kidney Reflux. He was diagnosed at 3 months, after ulrasounds for fluid in kidneys.
He was on the low dose antibiotics for a year, then retested, and that one year is all it took for him to outgrow it.
he had stage 2 on both sides. DO you know what stage your daughters reflux is? I was told if its 1 or 2 chances of outgrowing are good. 3 goes either way, and a 4 or 5 usually means surgery, but not always.
My niece also had kidney reflux, on one side a stage 1 but took 2 years to outgrow it.
If you ever want to talk, or have questions, please feel free to send me a message.

Thinking of you,
M.

My daughter has it. We found out she had when she was 6 months old and has been on an antibiotic ever since. We had her tested so young b/c I had it and I had to have a kidney transplant. But my case is very rare since most people grow out of it on their own. Since my daughter hadn't grown out of it we decided to have the Deflux procedure. We had it done in Feb. of this year. It's an outpatient procedure. She had to be put to sleep which scared us but she wasn't cut and she was only put under for about 15 mins. They put gel on the tubes that connect to the bladder. She's still on the antibiotic until we get another x-ray done in Sept. to see if it worked. She had an ultrasound done on her kidneys in March and everything looked good. She's never had a urinary tract infection or any problems taking the antibiotic. We just wanted to have the Deflux done so we wouldn't have to keep giving her the medicine everyday. I hope this helped. Let me know if you have any questions about Deflux.

My daughter was diagnosed at age 3 with the same thing. She has been on bactrum med since that age. She is tested every year and she got better the first year and has stayed the same since. We discussed our options and surgery was the next step. She is now 7 and will be having surgery this fall. If you need more advice or support, let me know!!!

Hi J.,
I have a good friend whose 18-month old daughter had been hospitalized 3 times with UTIs because of kidney reflux. Because of the serious side effects of maintenance antibiotic, she chose to heal the kidney/bladder which she did. She is now three years old, has not been on antiobiotic for a year and a half nor has had any more infections. If you'd like more information on what she did, please contact me off line at ____@____.com.

My suggestion is to make a list of the signs and symptoms of the problem with the reflux, like back pain, irritability, fever, an abnormal odor to her urine, frequency and amt of urine in her diapers. It might be convenient to make a chart on your computer, copy it and keep it on a clip board next to your changing table. That way all urine output can be monitored, you will be aware of any changes that take place and be able to prevent any complications. It will also be a valuable resource for your physician to monitor the situation.
The surgery for this is to reimplant the ureters higher on the bladder. It is necessary in some cases. I would recommend having your dtr evaluated by a pediatric urologist. If you can go to a teaching hospital, as here in Ohio, we have University Hospitals of Cleveland, or the University of Toledo pediatric urology dept. It is important to have check ups to make sure your dtr doesnt develop polyonephritis, when the urine backs up into the kidney and causes a chronic infection, inflammation and possible death of the cells. I will pray for you and your dtr.It is a challenge to your parenting responsibities but remember it is short term and will either go away or be corrected with surgery. I like the clipboard idea because it will allow you to stay on top of your dtrs condition and it allows you and your husband to continue life as normal from day to day and not focus all your energy on this problem. You want to enjoy your newborn and provide adequate attention to her special needs.

My daughter had it when she was around 3 years old. Had her tested locally and the doctor stated her at a grade 3 or 4 if not better in 3 years then he would do surgery. Then we took the xrays and dot test they ran to DR Wolpert who works with Childrens Hospital in Minneapolis who is a pediatric urologist surgeon who looked over the test and stated that my daughter had two ureters on one side and decided to do antibiotics for 1 year if not better - surgery. Before the year was up she was having breakthrough infections while on antibiotics and had surgery with Dr Wolpert. Now she is 17 almost 18 years old and the healthiest kid in my home.
