Anyone Else Have This Problem?

My dishwasher does not clean the glasses. The glasses always come out of the dishwasher with a sandy sediment inside them and I end up rewashing by hand. What a pain. Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do about it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Who needs men when we have so many smart moms around!!! Thanks for all your advise, I think I fixed the dishwasher. I followed your advise and took the dishwasher apart and the pieces were caked with old dish cleaner and sediment and who knows what else. I cleaned everything really well, then I bought the special dishwasher cleaner and ran that through a cycle. I bought liquid dish soap. My dishes came out sparkling clean. My husband was so impressed.

Have you tried using a rinse agent? That may improve things. In my dishwasher, I use the dish cubes with the red ball in the middle. They're costlier than the powder or liquid detergent but I don't need to rewash the glasses now that I use those.

I have this problem too! I have hard water but we do have a water softner and I have tried all the things listed below plus a few others, as well as taking it all apart and cleaning everywhere...nothing works? I have taken to realize that my dishwasher just sucks!

I find I have this problem if I run out of Jet Dry. As long as I use Jet Dry they come out good. We have hard water where we live.

Common problems in order of commonness/ easiest to fix

1- Make sure the disposal is run and clear
2- Check the trap at the bottom for sediment & or debris
3- Check the wholes in the spinner as well
4- Make sure the hose leading from the washer to the disposal is clear

If any of these are partially clogged... the dirty water doesn't entirely empty out... and so the heavy bits (that are kind of like sandy bits) just continue to get swirled around. Frequently, they're on the other dishes as well, but are so fine (and typically bleached transparent) that they're only visable on clear glass. And then it's obviously "eeew".

The same problem can happen if there's not enough water pressure, or if your pump is on it's last legs.

It happens to me all the time, and the only thing I have found that really works (I have tried all of the suggestions below) is to put them on the bottom rack, or just wash by hand.

I don't have the problem with my Kitchen Aid, however, I do use Jet-Dry regularly.

Sometimes I will run the dishwasher on the sani cycle with nothing in it but vinegar.

Also, the filter may need to be cleaned. If your hubby is handy, he can do this.

Good luck

This happens to me if I wash a pan with something burned on it. I just recently had sweet potatoes burned to a cookie sheet and it left the sediment when I ran them through the dishwasher. Now I wash my pans by hand and everything else inthe dishwasher.

its on e of two things. you are either using too much dishwasher soap or you are pre-cleaning your dishes so the soap is clinging to your glasses instead of working on getting dishes clean. scrape instead of rinsing your dishes.

I know exactly what you are talking about! Last summer, we had this problem. I have a Kenmore dishwasher and called up Sears. I decided to purchase the warranty and am so glad that I did. I had guys come out about 4 different times. Each time, it had to do with build-up in the dishwasher. But each guy did more efficiant cleaning than the previous. I was recommended, by the very last guy, to use a dishwaher cleaning product - ie Finish, which you can buy in the cleaning items isle. This reminds me, I should use this product again. I just received the notice that my warrany is ending soon. Boy will I renew it. Good luck.

HA! We have the same problem. (as well as many other problems with our unit) Luckily we got ours @ Lowes w/warranty and they came out to repair it 3 times, and when it didnt resolve the issue, they gave us our original $$ back to go toward a new unit. Gotta love warranties...

Not sure what the sandy stuff ever was. You could put a clean glass in and out comes a dirty one with the gritty stuff baked right onto it. I thought maybe it was the powerball tabs. But then it happened with other stuff. sigh...

good luck!

i had the same issue. my kids sippy cups would turn out nasty too. they always had flakes of stuff inside and were spotted and gross. I had to start using a natural dish washing detergent. it is the ONLY thing that has prevented it for me. I dont know how you feel about buying it online, but that is how i buy me. It ends up being a benefit though, because i only have to fill the detergent cups halfway. I started getting all of my stuff there because it all worked so much better and the fact it is safer helps too. lol. http://www.HealthySafeAndClean.com can give you all the information if you want it.

Run a cup of vinegar through it.
Also, use the packets of detergent, not the liquid (liquid is better for washing machines, powder for dishwashers--go figure!)
Also, you may have some gunk clogging up the bottom of the drain area....

What is the water in your house like? This might be the whole problem-have it checked out to see if there is a leak. Or perhaps your whole town water has certain qualites that don't show till this happens...also try turning your glasses on their slant a bit see if that helps get the water and cleaner into the glasses.

Someone suggested to me to put white vinegar in the dispenser where you would put a rinse agent. Vinegar should help with hard water and phosphates. Also try using a little less detergent, particularly if you have a newer dishwasher. They are efficient enough to be able to use less nowadays. Good luck!

Have you used Jet Dry? If not, then stock up on it because it is worth every penny. If you have, it may be time to get a new dishwasher.

Don't pack the bottom rack so full. Leave it open a little for extra water to spray up. Worked for me. :)
