Hi there, I'm 17 weeks pregnant and have been awake since 2am because of the frequency of round ligament pain. I feel a sharp stabbing pain on the lower right abdomen area near my hip. I know that RLP is normal. What I'd like to know is if the frequency of it is normal. Has anyone else experienced frequent pains? What can I do about it and how long did it last?

What can I do next?

I am 34 weeks, and I experienced lots of RLP. It DOES go away :) I can't remember exactly, maybe I had it going on for several weeks? I think I had it pretty severe for 3-4 weeks. Good luck!

Round ligament pain is pretty normal, and it's not uncommon for women to have it to some degree throughout pregnancy. I had it bad for probably 6 weeks. Of course, I was also a hyperemesis mom (morning sickness only about 1000 times worse), so with all the throwing up I did, I put a lot of stress on my abs as it was. But it did go away. Best thing you can do is rest, and any stretches that your MD or chiropractor might prescribe. Tylenol didn't do much for me, but it might for you. Good luck!

Hi, My son is now turning 3 next week, and I suffered from round ligament syndrome frequently as well, while I was prenant with him. It went away in about 2-3 weeks. The pain was off and on, but it was bad. Very uncomfortable, but it'll pass soon. Your ligament is stretching to prepare for your baby to grow, and being that it's your first, you feel it more. Don't worry, it does go away, and I didn't get it with my second pregnancy. Good luck to you!

Have you concidered prenatal massage therapy.. It can help with RLP along with some of your other body changes. There is a wonderful women in Austin, I met during my pre-natal massage training course a year ago.

I had a lot of round ligament pain with my last pregnancy. It started around 15 weeks and did not stop until I had my child. It actually got worse for me, the further along I got. I was very concerned as I am a nurse and was on my feet a lot which made it worse. My doctor told me to do pelvic exercises such as a pelvic tilt to relieve the pressure but nothing seemed to work. I remember it getting so bad sometimes that I could not walk. I don't know how commom it is but I didn't have it with my first two pregnancies. Just the last one. Is this your first pregnancy? I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestions for you but, ask your doctor. Maybe they will have some better answers for you. Good luck and I hope you don't have to go through as much discomfort as I did.

I experienced this when I was 20 or so wks along. Very painful but I don't think it lasted for more than a week (all day thing). When I hit about 7 months I started having sciatic nerve pain, that it hurt to walk, lay down flat, get up, and that lasted the rest of my pregnancy.

I had RLP so bad that I could hardly walk for a couple of days. I think I experienced this off and on for a few weeks, then it tapered off. Extra-strength Tylenol and rest helped me get through it. And now that I have my 10-month-old bundle of joy, I can hardly remember the pain! I hope you are feeling better really soon!

When I was pregnant with my 2nd, I really pulled the round ligament. It throbbed for 1-2 weeks. I am currently pregnant with my 4th and if I get up too quickly, or cough too hard, it can hurt...but, just for a few seconds.

I had frequent pain especially at night. But had three beautiful kids as a result. Don't worry enjoy your pregnancy and look forward to the future. Pray for your unborn child. My children are everything I prayed for even to the color of their hair and eyes.

Hi L.
I had twins 28 years ago, arrived 6 weeks early.
Pretty normal.
My 2nd pregnancy I experienced those very sharp pains
like you described. I worried that something was wrong.
After an extrememly normal birth, I did not have any
more pains. I never had the pains explained or diagnosed.
I wondered if it had something to do with 2nd pregnancies.
I wrtie this to calm your fears, if that is possible.

HI! This is so normal and it does actually hurt a lot so don't worry. I got them a lot with my first pregnancy and I think in the second trimeser they didn't bother me as much, bu I think they bothered me more in the end again. I am now nearing the end of my second pregnancy and they haven't gone away. They have been more intense (my docter said this is very common after the first baby.) Anyways, what I am trying to say is that they are normal and don't worry. Try to move slow when getting up and get rest. Take tylenol if it really bothers you (yes, this is safe!). Try stuffing a lot of pillows around you when you sleep, this can be akward if you have to get up and go to the bathroom a lot still! I slepp on the couch alot, for some reason it helps me. I just got a pregnancy support belt that just goes around your back and under the belly. It helps a lot. Your belly probably isn't too big yet, but it really helps my giant lump support itself! I am sorry it is hurting you so much, but no pain, no gain right? haha Just get rest and go slow like I said and DO NOT HESITATE to call your docter if it really bothers you. I have several times so far and that was all it was and UTIs but that is another story. It will be ok!

I had awful round ligament pain that hit around 20 weeks during my first pregnancy. It came on so suddenly and so painfully I thought it was appendicitis. With rest it gradually got better over a week.

A friend's co-worker had ligament pain so bad her doctor put her on bed-rest. (her job involved standing on her feet all day)

I had ligament pain in my pelvic area, and targeted exercise as taught by my chiropractor actually helped.

Hey there! I'm a first time mommy too and I am currently 31 weeks. The RLP is pretty frequent for me and sometimes last up to an hour. It's just kind of a dull ache. My ob/gyn said I should not worry unless you have any unusual discharge. It was difficult for me not to worry as much earlier on in my pregnancy but if you doctor's visits are normal you shouldn't worry too much. I know it is inevitable but the RLP is really very normal. I still get a little nervous sometimes and I think that will only go away once my daughter is finally here. I also had a big scare back in my 5th month with a sharp pain in my lower right side and called my ob/gyn during the weekend and all she told me to do was to take Tylenol. She reassured me that unless I was bleeding or had abnormal discharge that I would be ok and most importantly so would baby. I was hesitant to call her at first but if you ever have any concerns you should feel confident enough to call your doctor, that's what they are there for. Besides, I'm sure they have heard it all. Good luck and may God watch over you and your pregnancy.

Skip the drugs (which can have long term consequences....) go see that chiropractor. Better results!! Good luck.
