I am really just looking to know anyone's experience and how they knew they were pregnant soon after having a baby. My son is 3 months old, I am nursing and have yet to get my period back. With my daughter I had it back right around 6 weeks. I don't feel pregnant... but I am starting to out think myself and worry. We are using protection but not perfectly. I havn't had any real symptoms of pregnancy but then again I don't feel like I am back to normal from my pregnancy so how would I know. I know I should just go take a test if I really was worried about it but I feel silly spending the money on a test when there is nothing to test.... (Yeah, I am really over thinking this one...)

What can I do next?

There is always a chance that you can get pregnant while breastfeeding, but I wouldn't base it on not having a period. Everyone is different, but I didn't have mine the whole time I was breastfeeding. My periods started up again about a month after I weaned my daughter. An inexpensive way to find out is to buy a pregnancy test from the dollar store. I have seen them at Greenbacks Dollar stores.

Good Luck!

This is completely crazy, but my grandma was preggo in 1954. Her due date was Jan 1955. About 10 weeks after the she got pregnant, she had some bleeding. The doctor said that it was relatively normal and to stay off her feet until the bleeding subsided. After the bleeding stopped she went back to her doctor to check on the baby. The baby was fine! January came along and no baby. Then Feb. then March. NO BABY! The finally gave her an x-ray to see the baby and the baby was smaller than 2 mo. late, but otherwise healthy. It turns out that 10 week bleed was a misscarriage and she got preggo the same week she miscarried with my mom. Two babies, one pregnancy, one child. Yes it is possible you are pregnant, but unlikely.
Every baby is different, and you really havent set a trend with missing periods and nursing since you only have 2 kids. Not having any period for the entire time you nurse is not uncommon, this could be normal for you with this baby. If you don't have any symptoms of pregnancy, chill, and enjoy the absence of Aunt Flow!

I nursed my daughter and didn't get my period back for close to five months. My doc said there was nothing unusual about it, sometimes when you nurse that is what happens.

I highly recommend you get the book "Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing." It explains how nursing can naturally space children and how and why a woman's body works this way. You can also learn the signs to watch for to indicate your body's returning fertility. I have nursed all four of my daughters, and with the first three I didn't get my first period until 14 months postpartum; with my fourth it returned when she was 12 months. Knowing this about my body made me less likely to worry about being pregnant too soon. Hope this helps!

return of your period will be different with every baby. if you are exclusively nursing on demand, no more than 4 hours between feeding during the day and no more than hours between feeding during the night, or especially if you are night nursing, your period may not return until you stop night nursing, or until you start solids or until your baby stops nursing completely. i wouldn't be totally concerned. taking charge of your fertility is a great book that will help you see your body's fertility signs and even while you don't have your period you can see if you are ovulating, some women do ovulate before the return of their first period, some don't. . this should put you at more ease. i would say, if you don't start solids til 6 months and are following the above guidelines with nursing, you are likely not to ovulate for at least 6 months, maybe longer.

You can get pregnant as soon as the first time you have sex. If you are that worried about being pregnant get checked out. If not quit worring about it until you have some type of sign. If you are not ready for another baby take the precations. I am a beleiver in Planned children. I know that some times that is not going to happen but if you can DO IT. (Plan)

If you are worried take a pregnancy test. If it's negative, take it again in a month. I personally never have a period while I am nursing. Once I stop nursing all of that stuff goes back to normal. However, a friend of mine did get pregnant while she was nursing and because she doesn't have a period while nursing it took her about 4 months to figure out she was expecting.

I am one of the few exceptions to the rule it seems. I have 6 children and with all of them I have had a period while nursing them. I was actually in your situation once too. I have 2 girls that are 14 months apart. At six months old I found out that I was pregnant with the younger one. I realized that I was partly because I hadn't had my period (when normally I do) and then I started to have tender nipples. This tenderness was different than what can occur normally while nursing---it wasn't tender while she was nursing, it was tender when I touched them or even brushed my arm against them. I actually went to my DD's ped and asked about being pregnant and nursing, then went directly to my OB to find out what she said. But, because of my circumstances in the pregnancy with my older DD, my OB recommended to wean in order to preserve the pregnancy with the younger DD. I would based on your history of getting your period back at 6 weeks look into a home test just to ease your peace of mind. I know from experience that it is possible to get pregnant while nursing exclusively and that it is possible to live through having 2 children really close together. What ever happens will happen I guess. Good luck.

My sis in law has kids 11 mos apart and 13 months apart. It can happen. Periods can be very different each time. With my first they came back soon, with my second it took longer. I also got pregnant faster after my second.

I have never gotten my period while nursing but it's a myth that breastfeeing prevents pregnancy so you should always use some kind of protection. I have two 21 months apart as I got pregnant the month after I quit breastfeeding the first, then there is an 8 year break where nothing we did could get us pregnant so we gave up and have 2 more 19 months apart. I was breastfeeding and pregnant and had no symptoms of being pregnant until I was 33 weeks along with the last. I even had 2 different tests at the doctors office where they assured me I wasn't pregnant. I still didn't feel better so I switched doctors and the new one found my daughter by ultrasound as the test still showed I wasn't pregnant.

Hi H.,
I have not had personal experience with this but I do have a friend who became pregnant when her son was only 2 months old and she was nursing. Then after her 3rd child it happened again. So her first two are 11 months apart and her 3rd and 4th are about 13 months apart. She has survived and the kids are great. So, it is possible and you will make it work whatever the case!!! Good luck,
B.

It may just be that your period is not returning as quickly this time...I got mine back 5 months after my first pregnancy, but not until 8 months the second pregnancy. If you don't want to worry, go spend the money on a test...it's worth the peice of mind.

If you are concerned about being pregnant, take a test. It is never silly to spend money so you can be certain. It is better to know than not know. Also, sometimes people don't have periods while they are nursing. And it can be different with each pregnancy. You just had a baby. It can take up to a year for your body to get back to normal, and your cycle will probably change each time you have a baby. Sometimes it can take awhile for this change to occur. When in doubt, however, take the test. It is better to be safe than sorry.

H.,
I just wanted to let you know that I didn't have my period until 6 months AFTER I weaned my daughter (at 15 months)!
I think that is where the old wives tale that you couldn't get pregnant while you were nursing came from, was that so many women didn't have periods when they were nursing.
So I wouldn't worry, but be better about your protection.
kindly,
K.

It is possible to be pregnant. I have two friends with their children 12 months apart. I have even heard of someone with hers 10 months apart. I was nursing when I conceived mine and they are 15 months apart (we did plan for that). So there you go. One way or the other, I bet you are keeping it if you were, so I wouldn't worry too much. I love having mine close together in age.

I nursed my twins until they were 18 mo old, and got my first period back in late October (of 2006) then found out Christmas day I was pregnant again- we didn't use a condom ONE time! LOL!
My baby is now 10 months old, and I am nursing her, but I still have not had a period.

Virtually I have not had but one period since I got pregnant with the twins, so about 3 1/2 yrs now without one! LOL@
I am not looking forward to it starting up and being regular again- it will be very weird to me!

Get a pregnancy test at Dollar Tree... yep, one dollar. You can get pregnant while nursing, but many women will not get their period back or get pregnant until they are done nursing (I love that!). But you know, it's not birth control as many women have discovered through the ages, I guess in Ireland they say "Irish twins"... siblings born less than a year apart, you know... since a lot of Catholics don't believe in birth control.

Chances are good that you aren't pregnant, but it isn't impossible, my kids are 11 months and 20 some odd days apart, one was born 6-22-91 and the other 6-19-92, talk about a surprise and it happened the first time my husband and I did "it" again, we didn't exactly use protection but we were cautious. So Yes it is possible, and although hard, I wouldn't trade my Irish Twins for the world.

It is possible you could be pregnant but I wouldn't just go by your missed periods. I nursed 3 of my boys until they were one. My period didn't start up again until they were 10 months or so. I wouldn't worry unless you have other symptoms. If you are really concerned, get a pregnancy test, many doctor's offices will do them for free.

Hi H.~

I didn't get pregnant while still nursing, but I did have one cycle at the end of nursing and then got pregnant. We all know that we can over think a lot of things, especially when it comes to pregnancy and the monthly ups and downs associated with that can be emotionally draining. That said, relieve yourself...get a test. Good luck.

You can get pregnant soon after having a baby. Practice safe sex. When the period returns is different for everyone. I would take a pregnancy test just for your state of mind. Maybe you're worrying over nothing or maybe it's your intuition.

It can take a really long time for your period to come back when you are nursing. You are probably not pregnant. I know my aunt still didn't have hers when her son was 4 months old because I asked her if she had any feminine products and she said she didn't need them. I still don't have mine and my daughter will be two in August. That also might have something to do with my IUD. Take the test if it will help you feel better, but don't stress that you don't have your period yet.

I have a good friend who was nursing...she and her husband jumped the gun a little on the no sex for 6 weeks...they did it once at 4 weeks...when she went in for her 6 week check up she discovered she was pregnant again. Her daughters are less than 10 months apart.

I say you need to take a test so you can put your mind at ease.

I will tell you that after I had my daughter my periods were screwy...I would get one that lasted for 2 weeks and then it would be 3 months before I got another. I finally went to my doctor because I wanted to have another baby right away...they tested my thyroid and they discovered that I have hypothyroidism. This affected the regularity of my cycles and apparently it is pretty common in women who have just had babies. If your period doesn't regulate soon...I might suggest you get your thyroid checked.
