I had the paraguard put in just over 2 months ago. I think it's great! My first period with it was VERY heavy, but the second wasn't as bad. I'm happy to be on a non-hormonal birth control that I don't have to think about!
I just had a baby and want to go back on birth control. My OB told me the pill is not an option for me b/c I get Migranes. New research suggests that there is a link between women who suffer from migranes and take the pill---there is a MUCH higher risk from suffering from a stroke. According to my OB packaging on Pills may need to include a warning in the next few months/years.
He suggests taking nothing hormonal. What options do I have? I've been on the pill for so long that I'm not very familiar with anything else. I have tried the diaphram and didn't like it and we'd prefer to not use condoms. He suggested an IUD, but I've read they have awful side effects and are painful. Just trying to get some info from real people who have used an IUD instead of just reading info on the web. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Thank you all so much. :)

Go for it! I had the same problem with not being able to use the pill due to migraines. I used a diaphram before too and hated it. I love my IUD and wish I'd tried it years ago when we had first gotten married. The only problem I had was at first when my doctor put it in I had cramping for a couple days and some bleeding. Nothing worse than a normal period. It has been so nice not to worry about birth control and it's been great for me! Good luck in your decision!
I did get an IUD after my 3rd...at 8 weeks postpartum. Worst experience. I also was on birth control for years...The IUD I had was Mirena there was a 1% chance for irregular bleeding and I guess I was in that percentile. Also had two other friends that had issues with it. I was bleeding more than I wasn't. You could google on WEB md and also mayo clinic for suggestions. Good luck and hope this helps.
i had the iud for almost 5 years. at first i had very hard periods and real bad cramping. that got a little better but i had long periods that would last almost 2 weeks and i would have very bad pms. i liked it due to the fact of not having to rememeber to take anything or do anything. i did have it removed due to the fact of having the long periods it was driving me crazy. i am now on the nuva ring and i like it. hope this helps
I had my Mirena put in about 9 weeks pp and really have had no problems at all. I had some very slight cramping the first day or so and some spotting but then nothing ...I've had it for about 4 months now and my periods have been very light and far apart (but to be fair, i am still breastfeeding so this could be the reason...) I get migraines as well and have not noticed this to have any effect on them at all. I still get them just as frequently as before so it has not helped or made them worse. I must say that I absolutely LOVE not having to worry about birth control (this was my third baby so I really don't have the time!) I'm all for it...so i say go for it.
I also have the IUD and much like the post Debbie wrote I really like it. I also had mild cramping and a little bleeding but it is worth it not to have to worry about taking a pill. I would recommend it to anyone who was interested! Good luck!
I was on the pill forever and now have an IUD. I should have made the transition a long time ago. Especially since I'm now realizing how bad it is to be on the pill for so long.
I don't have any pain what so ever with an IUD. Love it. extreamly light periods, as in a panty liner is all I need! Gotta love that. I have no side effects either. I have the 5 year IUD. Maybe they just keep improving them and you spoke with someone who has an older brand.
Hi Tracy,
I had the paragard IUD. No hormones. I was very happy with it at first. I was breast feeding when I had it put in, so I didn't get my period for almost a year after wards. Once I did get my period, it was MUCH heavier. It slowed down for a while and then became heavy again.
I think I asked several questions about them here and had a good mix of people who either loved it or hated it. If heavier periods don't bother you, then I say go for it. I was a 3 day very light period kinda girl and with the IUD, they were 7 heavy days (which I realize is normal to some people).
I had mine taken out in December because I wasn't happy with my periods and we are thinking about another baby, so it made sense to take it out. I think I may be willing to give it a try again if we have another child. I loved the idea of having it in for up to 10 years and not having to worry about it.
Good Luck with your decision,
B.
