I am hesitant to buy this brand new. Does it work? Is it like a drill sargent learning setting? Has anyone used this?

What can I do next?

I don't have any experience, but I agree with "why does a baby need to read?" There's so much pressure in society for kids to grow up. Let them be kids. Your baby will excel in school if you are involved. I don't agree with flashcard teaching either, for you young kids. Sorry to be negative.

I love the "your baby can read" program. I use it everyday. My baby is 10 months old and he can actually read about 25 words now. I would strongly recommend this. My husband, myself & my mom we all spend so much fun time doing this. He watches the vedios, and then we read the books to him. After that we show flash card to him. We sing the songs and dance to them as well. He is able to speak since 6 months, and his first words were "arms up" at 6 months. When we give him two words, and ask him to choose for example "elephant", he quickly picks the correct card and hands it over to us. I have been doing the program since 4 months, which was adviced by one of my aunts is an excellent montessori teacher.

I do not let him watch any television, except for the your baby can read program about 10 mins a day / three times a day. In fact he is not interested in any of our shows on tv even if it is on. but when his vedio starts he quickly sits and watches it.

My husband and I are both full time Software Engineers, and sometimes even if we come home after work, we have after hour work to do from home. But we make sure we spend time doing this, as my baby actually brings his books and cards and tells us to read it to him.

Most importanty its important to interact with him, and give personal time, and have fun while doing the program. It's such a joy to see them learn and have fun with you.

I have not used Your Baby Can Read but have wanted to look into it because as an early childhood educator the concept really bothers me. It most likely works but, I do not see how it can be good for young children. Spending time with it may keep them from the early learning experiences that are more important for lasting learning and actually cause problems later. Most of what I have seen is used with the program are the things research has show if used too early in life can cause "school induced" learning disabilities that show up in 4th-6th grade. Things such as vision problems, lack of comprehension and reasoning skills, poor social skills and school burnout. Better to spend time reading to your little one, playing with her and providing hands-on experiences to give her a solid foundation for school and life! Those parents who think it cannot hurt should do research from experts rather than just believe the sales pitch from the Your Baby Can Read company before using the program.

I highly recommend it. My baby started using it at 3months and 3 weeks old. She loves the videos, sliding cards and books. Its never been work, just fun. When she acts tired of reading, we put it away. After 3 weeks of the first video, she would bring her arms up when it said "arms up". She claps when it says 'clap'. She will look at you funny when you say a word that is on her video. Like she knows what your talking about.
For all of you who talk negative about something before you try it. Don't give advice!!!!!!!!! S. only listen to the ones who have used it. The commercial is right on!!
The company can set you up on a payment plan. That is what we did. Paid it off in 3 months. Also, seen it on ebay.

HI. I don't have any experience with it either but I've really considered buying it. I've looked on Ebay and usually the cost is about $70 but not all materials are there. However, I think the DVD's are the main thing that are important and sometimes flashcards are included too. IF you really need them you could make them yourself. I have also seen it on Craigs list. But I don't know how much the program actually costs full price so I don't know if that's a bargain or not. Hope you report back on what you find out because I'd love to hear your thoughts on the program!

We use it and love it! It surely can't hurt but will definitely help. It can only give them a head start and make things easier once they start school. It makes sense when you consider reading a written language and your baby's language center in her brain is rapidly developing at this early age. That is why it is easy for a baby to learn languages but not so much as an adult. The program is wonderful and fun- far from drill sargent learning. If your baby likes to watch videos or have books read to her she will love this. (a side note is that if you don't like the program you can return it for a refund. you can't do this if you buy second hand) The starter program we got came with 5 DVD, 5 flip books, 1 hard bound slide book, 5 sets of slide out flash cards and a bunch of other stuff. It is a really good deal. My almost 2 year old can now recognize several words without looking at the picture and he LOVES the videos. I would highly recommend this program!

I can understand the negativity coming from some of the moms out there about pressuring your kids to learn and grow up to fast but I assure you if you read the parents guide and watch the introductory dvd it will set that to rest. My thought at first was "If my child is going to look at a book and watch some videos anyway then why not this program?. He might get more out of it." It also explains their brain development etc. where this all makes sense. I do not force my child to do this. He thinks he is having fun. He just so happens to be learning!
