My (very active) 12 month old LOVES "Tails" and "Dog" by Matthew Van Fleet. They are two of the very few books that he will actually sit through to the end. Each page has something to touch, lift, sniff, move, etc. The "story" has a cadence to it when you read it out loud that I think also keeps his attention.

No specific titles, but my son LOVES all the touch and feel books, and any book with a window he could open (a lot of the little Pooh books!)

My son just adores the How does a dinosaur-- clean his room, say goodnight ,play with his friend, eat their food, get well soon. They all rhyme and at 4 he STILL loves them.

My son also loves Sandra Boyton (pajama time, oh my oh my oh dinasaur, barnyard dance, hey wake up are faves), along with Eric Carles Brown Bear and Polar Bear. My son is always on the move but he will sit and listen for these books. I know you said you wanted a step above picture books but we got the Baby Einstein box of alphabet books and my son loves them. He is able to recognize some letters and says various words that I know he picked up from reading those books. It was one of my favorite baby shower gifts. Happy Reading!

I sincerely hope you don't think this is a marketing ploy, but I have become a usborne book consultant with my daughter. The books are great, I have fallen in love with them, as have my grandkids.

The website is

We LOVE the Sandra Boynton books (esp. the belly button book and barnyard dance). Karen Katz books are also very cute and sweet- good for cuddling up before bed. Toddlers also love things they can touch and move, like windows or different textures. A few other people mentioned "touchy feely" books- you can check them out on my Usborne wesbsite if you want: ubah.com/V2232 HAPPY READING!!!

I have a 14 month old and a 26 month old, and their favorite book is No David by David Shannon....it does not have a lot of words and the pictures make my girls laugh.....we read it at least 5 times every day!

Really, I think any book that you can add inflection in your voice and make it really interesting for them would be great. The ones that I listed have been favorites in my house because I bounce them or use funny voices or create some suspense for what's on the next page. I hope this helps. Oh, Also...you could go to the library. I'm not sure about yours, but mine has an area with board books. Good luck!

When picking out a book I go to the store and go to the book spot and let the kids help pick at that age I picked books with one sentence on a page. Now we are into the bearenstine bears books. Good luck.
