Anyone's Child Have/had Blocked Tear Duct?

All my children have had blocked tear ducts. So,far they have resolved on their own with the warm compresses. My little one is only 10 months old. So we are going to see how it goes. Her left one looks like it does drain too good. I hope it will get better. Good luck. Hope everything goes well.

My 18 year old had that when he was a year and 1/2. His tear duct was just not fully developed. They did have to go in and place a tube in the duct to open it up. It stayed in for about 4 months and then was removed easily. Yes, he did have to go under anesthesia, but did very well. Everything will be fine. My son has not had any more problems with his eyes and like I said before he is 18 years old now.

i've had a child that had that problem but it resolved by itself. Have you tried using warm compresses on that side of her face. That actually can help unless its a skin overgrowth on the tear duct

my friends little boy had this. He also had the surgery and everything went fine it was vey short and he was home an hour later and hasn't had a problem since good luck.

One of my twins had one. Our Ped. said use warm water on a wash cloth as a compress several times a day and it worked just fine. Gone in a few days.

My oldest son, now 7, also had a blocked tear duct. I refused to let them unblock it. It did clear up on its own. I say give it some more time. Good luck.

My middle daughter was born with a closed/blocked tear duct. She has had the surgery twice-once at 3 months old and once at 2 years old. The first time the tube fell out after a year and i waited to see if she would out grow it. When she still had problems she had the surgery again at 2 years old. That tube lasted about a year again and we went to another specialist. They decided to wait to see if she would outgrow it since I didn't want the surgery a third time. She is now 6 and has not had a tube since she was 3. She has not had issues during this time. Sometimes with allergies her eye tears up more and I have to watch to make sure she does not get infections. I have tons of eyedrops that were prescribed to her to head off infections.

We had that surgery and it was totally fine. It was not going to clear up on it's own. Once the doctor went in and saw it was all "kinked" she said it would have never cleared on it's own. I know it is scary but don't worry, if you have a good doctor then it will all go well. They said that after the procedure that the kids tend to be crabby and upset and my daughter was all smiles. We were thrilled and it was over in about 15 minutes.

Yes, my daughter had a blocked tear duct from about 4 weeks until 15 months when she had the procedure done. I was very nervous too, but it all went well and it resolved the problem. The nurses and doctors really walked us through the anesthesia on surgery day, and we felt really comfortable with it. It was a very short procedure, and she went home and played right afer. In my opinion, it's better to do it now when it's a simple procedure rather than later when it's more invasive if the blockage has not resolved itself.

I would get a second opinion....my second son had this...we lived in MD at this time and took him to Childrens hospital in DC and had a wonderful doctor who told us that many doctors choose to "take the easy way out" and do the surgery, but in most cases you don't have to. We spent about 3 weeks massaging the bump to relieve the pressure from the blocked tear duct and eventually it cleared and there were no more issues. I would definitely try anything else you can before doing the surgery...

My daughter also had a blocked tear duct. We thought we were going to have to have the procedure, but our doctor advised us to wait until 18 months. I'm so glad we did because it ended up clearing up all on its own. Decide what's best for you, but you might consider waiting a few more months. Good luck!

My 2 nieces have had this procedure done and it went very well. This is a very common procedure.

Ok that is the first time I have heard of having a tear duct unclogged. I had them when I was little and all 4 of my boys had them in fact my youngest who is 2 months has them and the way my Mom helped mine and the way I have helped my boys is a warm rag and massage the corner kinda under the eye gently. Have you tried anything like that? Good luck. I hope she gets better.

How old is your baby? My son had it when he was born. I got Albucid drops from a Russian pharmacy, apparently it's the stuff that they use in birthing centers. that and camomile tea (fresh camomile rather than a tea-bag) mixed with gunpowder green tea, did the trick for us. i put the drops in 3 times a day & the tea every time i changed his diaper (keep the mix in the fridge so that it doesn't go bad & make the fresh one every other day). it all cleared up by 5 months. but i really kept at it.

also, the doctor told us to do a massage where u massage the area near the tear duct (quite firmly, not to hurt the baby, but enough to apply pressure to help clear it up). i think it's worth a try before you go put ur baby under anaesthesia (not the best thing you can do for someone that young). good luck!
