Hi Mammas, Do any of you have a kid that plays Lacross. My son has played basketball, soccer and baseball now he wants to play Lacross. I signed him up to play all the kids in the neighborhood play. Then... I googled Lacross and watched a game on You tube, it looks pretty violent. Now I am worried that I made a mistake letting him sign up. What is your experience with the game? Thanks

What can I do next?

My son, no. But a lot of boys play it here, it's very popular. Most of the boys who play go on to play football in middle/high school, which is also very violent, even with all the protective gear!
I'm glad my son isn't into contact sports (he's a runner) but honestly, what are you going to do? All my kids have gone skiing, snowboarding and horseback riding, all high risk activities. My youngest did competitive gymnastics (lots of potential for injury there) and my oldest girl did club soccer (lots of chances to injure/tear the knee, as well as other things.)
I guess what I'm saying is they can't live in a bubble. As long as the program is reasonable, and follows good safety guidelines, let him play :)

Yes - my oldest (13) is starting his 4th season. It looks violent but it's really not, and they have good protection. There are lots of rules around checking to keep the game safe and they're not really going fast enough and the kids aren't big enough to cause injury other than the kinds of freak accidents that can happen in any sport. It's a great game - fast, lively, lots of action and skill. My younger boys (6 & 7) are also playing this year. It's a great sport - a lot like basketball and hockey in terms of how they play. If you can follow those games, you'll be able to pick this up in no time and enjoy watching.

No, but a lot of their friends do. It's becoming a very hot sport here in MN. The professional level is startingly violent. I've been to a game. With the kids they start them out with little or no contact and then it increases as they progress and get older. I believe it's similar to hockey in terms of contact. Talk to your local coach/athletic association to get more information. Different areas may have different rules.

My older one (almost 11) has played for a few years and my younger (almost 8) is about to start this year in Cheshire. They love it. It is not very violent at a young age (not sure how old yours is). They do get struck with a stick once in a while when getting stick checked but they are padded and he had never bben hurt playing, other than a slight ankle twist which had nothing to do with violence, only an uneven part of a field. It is fun to watch them play once they figure it out and I have no plans to pull them out of the sport as long as they want to play. I also have friends that play in Wallingford and they have had a positive experience there too. Good luck!

I don't have sons, but my 3rd daughter played ofr a year in middle school and, as much as she liked it, she wasn't really good at it so stuck with soccer after that. Her friend, though, is now attending college on a lacrosse scholarship. Yup, it's a little more intense than some games, but I've found sports to be wonderful for my girls and would let them play again in a heartbeat.

I used to play lacrosse... it's not as bad as the pros ;) I mean, we were flouncing around in cutesy little tennis skirts and lolly's underneath; we didn't have to wear helmets, only mouth pieces, because someone was under the impression that ladies would take it nice and easy...

...that was so not the case ;) BUT, still, no one got seriously injured! (Or injured at all, now that I'm trying to really think back and remember). We were just a rowdy group ;) We were the only public school team playing against all the little private school girlies that looked down on us, which made us want to rough them up I think, LOL!

ANYWAY, it's really, really not that bad. I'd let my kids play. Basketball is way more physical than lacrosse!! This will be fun :) If you're still not comfortable with it by next season, don't sign up again.
